Keeping The Reporters Busy

Mayor Doherty said a revised ordinance was introduced at Tuesday’s meeting because the changes that were made, “were enough that they couldn’t go to a second reading and had to be reintroduced.”

When asked what those changes are, the mayor said he did not know the specific changes.

In January, resident Katrina Clapsis asked the council why they were considering revising the law shortly after Doherty announced his freeholder bid. “The ordinance changes seem to be very beneficial to you in your run,” she said.

On Tuesday, Doherty scoffed at the notion that anyone would imply that.

“This is something we discussed a while ago. If someone wants to create a conspiracy where there is none, that’s up to them,” he said.

According to its lease with the borough, Chefs International will pay Belmar $235,000 per year, with a 2 to 3 percent annual increase, at varying times for 24 years, with an option to renew the lease for six years and two additional renewals for 10-year periods each totaling 50 years.

Over the 50-year term lease, the borough will received $24 million non-taxpayer revenue over the period.

“That’s $24 million that the town is not going to have to collect in property tax from all the residents,” Mayor Doherty said at Tuesday’s meeting.

(BTW, I will be 109 years old when Belmar sees the last of that $24 million.)

“In three years we haven’t had a bathroom at Maclearie Park and we’ve never seen any plans or drawings for a permanent bathroom in those three years,” Mr. Ehmann said.

Residents are also concerned that the Belmar Police Department will not live up to the standard of compassion and reliability exhibited by Lake Como’s officers.

“Our police department, we’ve known them and we have roots here. We have a connection with our police department,” said Deborah Cook, a resident of Lake Como for over 55 years.

“What you guys are trying to do, and I understand that you’re between a rock and a hard place, but to hook us up with Belmar, is the worst thing that could ever happen to this town.

“You don’t have the roots and you don’t understand what it means to have someone that you can depend on,” Ms. Cook said.

Sounds to me like both towns will be short changed if this police merger goes through. Not enough coverage by our police dept. certain times of the year and it will only diminish further if and when we merge.

Will the combined police command again practice segregating areas as they have in the past such as, their term, the ghetto?

I support the Lake Como police officers who may loose their jobs. Typical Doherty solution look closely to see who really benefits.

Hey Lake Como, what’s wrong? Buyers remorse? Mayor Ryan wasn’t exactly a fiscal conservative, so if you elect idiots that blow your budget up year after year, you do not have the right to complain where you’re broke! Blame the voters not the politicians. You know what neighbors voted for who. Unhappy? Seek a recall!!

“We’re not the great bar town of the Jersey Shore that we were 30 years ago,” Mr. Kirk said, “and we’re not the southern part of Belmar.”

    Mr. Kirk,…..now you are!

Laying off the DPW should be looked at first! The 4 guys don’t do anything but pick up brush, cut crash and plow the roads. These guys are also stealing tax dollars by bringing metal to the recycling center and splitting the money between the 4 of them instead of handing it in to the municipal office like they should. Lots of lake como residents bring metal items that would hopefully be recycled and make the town a little extra money, but the DPW workers take the metal and cash it in to fill their own pockets. They’ve been doing it for years.

SERIOUS ADVISE TO LAKE COMO OFFICIALS
#1- Lay off these 4 DPW thieves, those holding these sacred high paying jobs, and farm the work out to Wall Twp. They have their own new garbage trucks and a slew of DPW guys willing to cut grass and sweep sand.
#2- Fire whomever has been in charge of your fiscal well being. How in God’s name did you not see this fiasco coming?
#3- Change your name back to South Belmar. You can ride the wave of Belmar’s recent upsurge in commercial growth for free.
#4- RAISE PROPERTY TAXES LIKE OTHER TOWN NEEDS TO DO, gosh, have some dignity.

In the course of having a beer, Wilton should just ask Doherty how he’s able to go so many years without a municipal tax increase and still manage to pay all the salaries and buy the vehicles. If he doesn’t answer, buy him a shot, and then another. Eventually he’ll talk.

#7- Belmar’s meal ticket is water, the Atlantic Ocean and the Shark River. Matt is having a hard time (wasting) spending the oodles of Beach revenues within the confines of prior court decisions. You can only buy so many palm trees (remember that fiasco). Hence the need to take over Lake Como’s PD services to spend more of the beach revenues on. This “water” asset allows Belmar to borrow (bond) money much easier than it would be for Lake Como, borrowed money that “someday” will have to be paid back. Lake Como’s only true asset is a small downtown area and Lake Como lake, both of which they have failed miserably to exploit. Think out of the box and re-zone North Blvd. retail/restaurants overlooking the lake. Main St. should be developed to the Spring Lake line. And force out those dumpy dive bars that cater to the summer hooligans. The town image need a makeover.
