Our Haven In Hampton

Updated plan shaves a foot off the garage to give us some breathing room inside the setbacks.  We made some improvements to the layout inside too.

These are screenshots I took during our session with the architect yesterday.  New plans should be coming in a few days or a week.

Dave, may I recommend EPIC construction? Judging by the square footage it would only set you back about $5 million. That would of course include, vinyl floors, vinyl base moldings, a drop ceiling, no dimmers, no cross breezes, and wintertime frozen pipes. If you act now, you can give over full control to a private catering company. Not interested? Did I mention that FEMA is paying for the whole thing? It won’t cost you a dime my friend!

#10- I’m sorry you feel that my sarcasm is mean and ugly. I’m just trying to use humor to make light of what is a very troubling reality. There is no way that that structure cost $5 million. It is nice for sure and the view of the ocean is spectacular, but the view is free and the building itself doesn’t reflect the high cost. Furthermore, the booking of parties or events (for prime summer dates) is done thru Merry Makers. That is tantamount to handing over a publicly funded building to a private company. That’s not an opinion or editorial, it is a fact (call Merry Makers for a weekend date in June, July, Aug, or Sept, then call the boro for the same date and see what happens. I did). Why every single resident of this town isn’t absolutely furious over this boondoggle is a complete mystery to me. The town officials are selling OUR public institutions to the highest bidder and they’re packaging it as a benefit to the taxpayer. Nothing could be further from the truth. It is the act of mortgaging our town’s future for a short term gain and a catchy campaign slogan. This goes beyond party or policy or ideals.
The municipal building project is disturbing to say the least. That building is the people’s house. A democratic institution where citizens can go to petition their elected officials and air grievances without fear of retribution. To exercise their first amendment rights or engage in civic pride and contribute to shaping public policy. And they want to turn it into an apartment building! It’s madness. Our municipal building is a concrete bunker that was built to last. It does not belong in a landfill. It’s wasteful and environmentally unsound (Mr Brennan would need to ban plastic bags on a nationwide scale to make up for the impact of this). If the current building is in such bad shape, lets see a completed inspection by an objective engineering firm. Brandywine isn’t doing this out of the kindness of their hearts, nor are they interested in the well being of this community. They are doing it for a profit.
So my sarcasm may be mean and ugly but it’s the only way I can cope with this nonsense. As for giving up? That ain’t gonna happen.

#12 Anonymous. Please provide an example of any time I have spoken at a council meeting with wrong information. All council meetings are videoed by this blogs admin. So when you find an example post it here. I will then be happy to respond.
Why asking questions and hoping for transparent answers is considered negative is beyond my comprehension.
As for hate. I don’t hate anyone. I do dislike many policies set in motion by our “former mayor”. I dislike the cost of Taylor. I do dislike the promise of FEMA repayment that hasn’t happened and no one seems concerned. I do dislike that a 4.5 million dollar Community Disaster LOAN has basically disappeared and no knows or hasn’t been able show where it went or where it is. I do dislike that most of our council members dont seem to even know what it is or havent tried to find out. I do dislike that our former Mayor tried to change our pay to play laws and that most of the council did not object. I do dislike that our former Mayor and most of our council tried to link the Lake Como project bond to the Taylor bond. I do dislike that Taylor pavilion is not open and excessable to the public as was promised. Any of this that is incorrect let me know.

I was told by a very nice and helpful person that yes indeed that date is available. I gave no name, no deposit, and politely said that I need to think about it. I then immediately called the boro and spoke to a person who was also friendly but informed me that no, that weekend is not available. That, in fact, all the weekends through September were booked by merrymakers and that if I wanted that weekend, I would have to call merry makers. I informed her that I was a resident of Belmar and was again told that I would need to call merry makers. That is the absolute truth. In my opinion, that is unacceptable. ALL of the functions at that public community center should be booked through the town. All. If you want to then hire merry makers or any other catering company to cater it, then by all means go ahead. The fact that there have been a few events there that were not booked thru Merry Makers does little to undo the troubling reality that we have handed control of public property to a private entity. It’s not grey, It’s not nuanced, It’s not ambiguous, It’s wrong. If you honestly believe that there is nothing wrong with that scenario, then you are a better person than me.

#28-Mr. Bean-I have tried to clarify the issues surrounding the dances you referenced many times, but you refuse to accept what actually occurred. Your son was never denied participation in the dances. What happened was families bringing children who were young siblings of children in Circle of Friends (children not handicapped) who were running around the Taylor Pavilion unsupervised. (this is before Hurricane Sandy.) Borough staff told families involved that these children (not those handicapped) were not allowed to attend for safety reasons. I believe one of the children ran out onto the boardwalk. I was not involved in the organization, planning or in any way, shape or form in decisions surrounding the dances. Although Tracy was not on the ADA committee, as chair I invited her to attend the meetings. Why would I then deny your son access to the dances? I only found out about the perceived unfair situation when I walked into an ADA meeting and Tracy and others complained about a decision I had nothing to do with. (several of the ADA members were appauld as to how Tracy approached the situation which she totally misunderstood…as you now still do.) Also, Circle of Friends staff had nothing to do with a decision that was set up for safety reasons having nothing to do with handicapped children-young or on the older side. In addition, I supported financially a cause Tracy championed…I think it was called Michael’s Feat (?) For the 6th or seventh time, NO ONE denied your son participation . Proof of this is , after Hurricane Sandy the dances were held in the borough gym . Tracy brought your son to the dances well after accusations were hurled at me by you and your wife that I was being unfair. All I have ever done, or attempted to do, is offer support to your family and your son. Why you continue to bring my name up regarding this matter is beyond me. You and your wife took a misunderstanding and blowing it out of proportion so that you could put me in a bad light for your own purposes, whatever they may be.

Wow! Boy am I popular I guess. I admit I get a kick out of being hated, people are thinking about me! Anyway, what happened is the DJay, DJ Jay, has children that he would being with him to the dances. While he was working, they were left to their own devices and often did what children do and ran around and played. Adults supervising the event got nervous they would hurt one of the handicap patrons, so they did what society tends to do these days and instead of confront the problem they instead made the decision to no longer allow children under the age of 14 to attend the dances. I was very upset, so I called Ms. Deicke as well as Carol (I think, I can’t remember her name) to ask why. They did not want to upset the DJ since he is wonderful and does such a great job. It bothers me greatly that my son, since he is severely disabled, is often tossed to the side and made a sacrificial lamb because no one seems to care that children like him are ignored. The whole point of the dances was to be inclusive, and yet my son was being denied because they refused to confront the real problem. So at the next ADA meeting, I brought with me Melissa Knight, who was at the time head of the Belmar PTO, as well as other Belmar PTO members to discuss with the group ways that we could find to either keep the younger children occupied or be able to speak with DJ Jay about how to handle his children. These great group of moms deal with little ones all day, so I believe they are fully qualified to help with the matter. A few days later Colleen Connelly called me and asked me to meet her at her borough office, which I did. She said that they would rescind the matter and once again leave the dances up to everyone. At that point, my son Alex was allowed to return. We can no longer go unfortunately, our son has taken a turn for the worse this past year and can no longer use his legs. But I would fight for him all over again.

Lawless-I’m sorry to say I don’t know the answer to your question since I no longer serve on the council or on the ADA committee. My suggestion to you is to find out who chairs the ADA committee presently, and pose the question to that person. When I was chairing the ADA, We had several handicapped parking spaces added on Ocean Avenue, and one at the entrance at the Main Street entrance at borough hall ( this happened because of a handicapped person’s request. )

#57 …. compliance with the ADA requires a minimum of 1 accessible parking space per parking lot …. D’Jais, La dolce vita and Buzy bee laundry would need only 1 each ‘Reserved Parking’ space with signage.

Claire thanks for your help adding spaces to a county road and a business requirement to provide Handicap spaces are two completely different things. The fact that on this issue you pass the buck is a joke. #59 for the record they must have 1 regular handicap space and 1 Van Accessible . Who is the head of Belmar ADA ?

Gee, Lawless, I didn’t know the difference between what you described. Thanks for enlightening me. I always pass the buck…you know me so very well. Truth is , I don’t know why that establishment doesn’t have handicapped access, and, as ADA chair, I had no power over said situation. But, thanks for keeping me up on local happenings. I don’t know who the ADA chair is now. You seem to have excellent detective skills. Maybe you can find the answer yourself. You should change your title from lawless to all-knowing.
