Don’t Be My Valentine

Valentine’s Day.

Flowers, cards, candy, teddies (bear and the other kind), expensive dinners.

Nope, I don’t do any of it.

Valentine’s Day, Mothers Day and yes, even Fathers Day, these are holidays that exist for the reason of manipulating us to spend money foolishly.  You see the Keynesians that run this country incorrectly believe that all spending is good and that the economy should be based on everybody spending like crazy and always being in debt.  They don’t understand that spending is the result of a good economy, not the cause of one.  What creates a good economy is savings, investment and productivity.  If we want a good economy we shouldn’t be buying flowers, we should be putting that money into our savings so it can be made available to build new factories.  Sure it’s fun to spend the wealth that is then produced, but right now in this country we are spending way too much and saving and investing way too little.  That is why we are the biggest debtor nation in history and why the economy is never going to get better.

Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, these are real holidays.  They commemorate the dates of specific occurrences that have shaped our lives, our culture and our history.  But made-up holidays like Valentine’s Day are BS, they are just trying to get us to blow our paychecks on a bunch of dumb crap that we don’t need.  I refuse to participate.

I have explained all of this to my wife and she knows I am a man of principle and understands completely.  And the fact that I have rejected Valentine’s Day has nothing at all to do with her decision to take my daughter skiing in the Poconos this weekend, leaving me all alone here.

Well, not completely alone………

so

It’s a shame you don’t ski Dave. Forget the cold and wind that is a nuisance, but there is more to the sport. As someone who has skied in Europe and most of the US west and lived in Jackson Hole for a winter I can tell you it is a beautiful experience. I’m not bashing you Dave but rather lauding the entire experience of skiing. There is true beauty in the sport.
