I think I might not have mentioned that I’ve been up here in Manchester New Hampshire for the past few days for the Project’s annual winter gathering, called Liberty Forum. I don’t always attend Liberty Forum because unlike PorcFest it necessitates pulling the kids out of school for a day. (This year only my younger daughter is home, the older one is off at college.)
This year I had to come. The organizers pulled a real coup and landed as the keynote speaker (via Skype) the one and only Ed Snowden, who with the possible exception of Ron Paul, is the greatest living hero of the liberty movement.
WMUR reports:
Not only did they not allow local media like WMUR to tape it, they also denied permission to major media outlets such as Common Sense for Belmar. Reason magazine’s Nick Gillespie conducted the interview and their tape of it will probably be available on line by the time I get back to New Jersey this evening. I will embed it on the blog for those of you who would like to see it.
Snowden meets the Free State Project

Update: Snowden appearance makes Drudge Report:
By the way Snowden told us the only promise the government would make was that they wouldn’t torture him.

Admin. Please educate me how theft of government property, divulging items of national security and intelligence is heroic?
Don’t have a lot of time right now, but I would say that the information about who I call, who I text and who I email and the content of my conversations is my property not the government’s. I would also say there needs to be a distinction made between the security of the people and the security of the government. If the government is spying on us then our security does not exist.
I would also add that the government has stolen the 4th Amendment from us and Snowden is helping to return it to its rightful owners. The fact that there have been “reforms” in the wake of the Snowden revelations proves that the government was doing wrong and violating our rights and that Snowden is a whistleblower.
#1 – Sir, focus on the 10th Amendment and that’s all you have to know about how far out of control this Federal Govt. is.
BTW, we’re PACing up to head home now.
The event was held at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Manchester. We stayed at the hotel and it was really nice. Pet friendly too!
One funny note: They have valet parking but none of the valets know how to drive a stick. The only member of the entire hotel staff who knows how to drive a stick is this older gentleman who is head of security. Every time we needed our van they had to call him down from his office to the lobby to get it for us and then put it back when we returned.
Cardinal Spellman…”it’s my country ,right or wrong”
#4 – I heard of a carjacking out in Detroit that same thing happened. None of the bad guys could drive a stick shift and the victim got his car back.
Actually the theft rate for sticks is practically nil
Do you say “FETCH” when you ask for it?
All new driver’s should be required to know how to drive a stick. Could save lives if they are needed to be a Designated Driver in an unplanned situation.
#9 – I wonder at the feasibility of your suggestion. Especially when thinking of the vast majority of our young people. I don’t think it would be prudent to get them so upset trying to coordinate their foot and hand movements shifting gears. It’s a question of concentration beyond most of their abilities unfortunately. As any lucid man or woman knows, our young people don’t handle criticism (teaching requires criticism) well. Leave well enough alone.
It’s bad enough teaching a teenager to drive at all, let alone a stick.
From a bygone era:
heel-toe downshift
3-on-the-tree
double-clutching
4-on-the-floor
grind-me-a-pound!!!!!
Gene for Superintendent of Schools. He is a multifaceted treasure to be shared by all of us.
Learning to drive a stick shift was mandatory…its what my Dad’s car had. Benefit…my first car…1967 Vette with a 3-speed stick. BTW…the car was two years old when I bought it in pristine condition for $3,500.
My first car was a 1958 MG. Not only did it have a stick but it had bad syncros and the only way to downshift was to double clutch.
We could use more brave Snowden-types in Belmar. I can imagine Mr. Campbell and Ms. Connolly with billy clubs at a mayor and council meeting if the police are pissed off at the mayor and refuse to show up as a blue line of authority. Wow, give me the passion against injustice of the ’60s!
