Beach umbrellas were once not allowed on the belmar beach because a rolling umbrella caused a death on the beach on a windy day

If the egomaniac had left well enough alone and not “marketed” this ordinance to every media outlet on his contact list all would have changed very smoothly. This Mayors thirst for public recognition again has put Belmar in the spotlight of controversy. FYI, this is a Belmar issue and not an issue for the consideration of our guests.

C’mon, just ban the mayor and council, i.e., throw ’em out whichever way is legal. If the racketeering charges are proven, they may be on the way out. Let us bow our heads and pray at the gazebo mass on the 13th for justice for this small borough.

Along with the tents, coolers, buggies…no one goes to the beach for the beach anymore. You can’t enjoy the water because the beachfront has turned into a sports arena…footballs, baseballs, soccer balls and all kinds of balls flying everywhere. Last week, two guys were doing airborne soccer ball tricks taking up half the beach and having the moms of little kids move their kids out of the way as the guys made their way up and down the beach. I am not a fan of the shelters and tents, but I think there are a lot of things that can hurt people and/or hit them on the beach. We have complained numerous times and it seemed like they took it seriously last year, but it has gotten worse this year. We wouldn’t need rules or ordinances if people just had simple common courtesy.
I’m afraid beach etiquette is a thing of the past. Like walking on someones towel, crowding your neighbor, feeding the Seagulls, playing ball where someone is trying to relax. Tents are not welcome on the beach. It’s just a given. So what’s the big deal with the ban? It just makes sense, big tents obstruct the view of the ocean. Beach goers are at the beach to look at the ocean not the back of a tent!!
Call the cops if people are throwing balls and endangering others.
As an aside, why are there so few Belmar bus trios lately? Miss them
Ladies & gentlemen, At this point in time, there is not a rule, ordinance, law and so forth that is not open to question. People just believe they can do what they want and will not be deterred. It’s too late to be yelling about this now. The yelling and fighting about it should’ve been done years ago. Unfortunately, the only way to stop this madness is not nice. But there’s no other way, unhappily.
Maybe the Val Pack coupons wasn’t such a good idea ? Maybe calling the AP for a press release wasn’t either ? Maybe trying to Black Ball the Harmon’s can be added to the list of bad ideas ? Maybe there is a reason our neighbors are never in the press promoting their beach ? To top it off it starting to look like a strong hurricane season I hope the new outflow pipes are up in running in the south end of town , they were shovel ready projects after all. Maybe Spring Lake is thinking it was bad idea to let Belmar take the lead on this .
Totally unrelated, but what was with the loud Rave Party and singing last night??? I know that I am a light sleeper, but I had to close the windows and put the air conditioner on. Called the cops around 12:00 and was told that it was Bar A and that there were numerous complaints and that they would send some officers…it didn’t stop until 1:30. Mind you, I am on 10th, way on the other side of Main…I can’t imagine how loud it was closer to the source. Does Belmar have jurisdiction over Bar A???
#18 we are having the same problem in the southern end of town. You can hear the music from Bar A in our house on Saturday, and Tuesday. If the wind is blowing in the “wrong” direction, it sounds like it is next door!
Bar A has been out of control this year and both the Mayor’s of Belmar and Lake Como are doing NOTHING about all of the noise and chaos. Is it any surprise that Belmar has a paid ambulance crew, and sometimes 2 crews, on duty from 8pm to 6am every Tuesday night to deal with the Bar A mayhem?
#18 – They are testing the waters for their big Labor Day Weekend blowout with outdoor DJ’s. It would be so easy for the towns to enforce their noise ordinances but the powers that be tend to turn a deaf ear (pun intended).
#20, let’s not pretend that ambulance is just for Bar A!!! D’Jais, and Boathouse customers have used it during those hours as well!
#22 – The D’Jais calls are mostly Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and all of those nights have paid for ambulance crews on also. The Boathouse, I’ll venture to guess that their patrons are part of the weekend ruckus, but by comparison their occupancy is probably 250 people where D’Jais is close to 700 and Bar A’s is close to 2000+?
Bar A and Djais are both paying for a nightly fee to have the ambulance and their members on standby.
Bar A was the main sponsor for the Belmar 5 mile run. They had the new “beer bottle opener” medals made up with the Bar A logo.
Acting Chief approved the July 4th Bar A outdoor concert stage for the whole weekend and I bet the Acting Chief made a ton of Overtime listening to the loud music.
Bar A and Djais both pay for a slew of Belmar regular cops for Overtime and Special Officers for several hours every week.
Bar A and Djais both give to Matt and Wilton for their campaigns.
So now lets think about who is actually going to enforce anything against Bar A or Djais….Not Matt, not Wilton, not Acting Chief $$$

For several years, at Council Meetings, I have spoken about the Footballs, Soccer balls, Frisbees, kites that dive down like arrows, and the people involved with these activities. I’m the only one who talks about this dangerous problem at council meetings. Some (not all) of the meeting dates are August 7, 2013-August 18, 2015-June 8, 2016-August 16, 2016. #24 – Thanks for the info, but want is not fact is that there is an ambulance fee being paid by the bars. Although, the cost of the paid ambulance services may still be claimed as being “FREE” to the Belmar taxpayers. Does anybody want to venture to guess why?
It will probably take a lawsuit by someone who has had an eye permanently damaged by some thrown projectile to get some action. Or a baby not in a protective mini-tent who has been sent into a coma by a ball. Or a little kid who sustains a broken limb, trampled by some big lug tossing a football. Sorry, a new sign stating “Enjoy the beach at your own risk” won’t make it all better.

#33 as far as Texas, that’s crazy. Why is this such big news? It’s not like the town is banning towels, beach chairs or sunscreen! There a banning tents that belong in campgrounds or at soccer tournaments. Bouncy houses will be next on peoples lists to keep their kids entertained.

There is an ordinance against ball playing on the beach. Volley ball used to be played after beach hours.
There was a person hurt on the beach by
A flying umbrella. Outcome was a law suit against Belmar.
Camp grounds are the place for tents not the beach. Scouts do not camp on the beach.
According to what we pay to live in this town there is no middle class who

It definitely was time for the 3 bars to pay for their own ambulance service.
The towns around us were answering their own calls and couldn’t handle theirs and ours as back up all summer.
We should all thank Belmar Avon and
Spring lake for the calls they have
answered for us some were for residents.
In the end our town is over run with people cars bikes and is not like other towns who don’t need the money and when all parking places are gone the town is closed. I do not blame them for not wanting spillover from the next town.

Make everyone happy. Sanction different beaches for different activities. ie 2nd thru 5th, ban everything, food and all, 6th thru 9th, allow tents, footballs and such, 10th thru 13th, and so on and so on. AND 19th, across from d-jays, allow everything, smoking, drinking, nudity, urinating……
I use 4th Ave beach. I want to eat and smoke. I did propose in 2010 that we have odd numbered beaches with whatever restrictions they want to place. I called them “killjoy” beaches. The even numbered beaches would have allowed any activity that’s legal to do in public. I called them “free beaches”. This way you could go to the beach in the part of town you lived in.
#26 I did raise the topic of unsafe “play” on the beaches at the last Council meeting (I remember YOU presenting your deep concerns the past two years). After questioning the role and responsiveness of Belmar’s PD “policing” the beach, the comment from the dais was its under control which, of course, was confirmed by our chief of police. We KNOW the unsafe conditions that exist, are tolerated, perhaps encouraged as good for business by our administration and enforcement staff. This town suffered the tragic loss of two children recently; tears were shed .. condolences shared. There no excuse for ignoring known unsafe conditions. We should all stand firm .. ZERO tolerance .. for actions or inaction that puts children and adults at risk on our/THEIR beach.
