Doherty: Eminent Domain Never In Belmar

But OK for Atlantic City?

March 2007:

“We have seen how eminent domain has been abused in other Shore towns, and now the residents of Belmar know that it could never happen here,” said Councilman Matthew J. Doherty, a Democrat, who had proposed the ordinance after taking office on Jan. 1. “This ordinance grants protection to homeowners that has the strength of law.”

February 2009:

“It’s wrong to take private property and turn it over to a redeveloper for private gain.” Belmar had previously adopted an ordinance in 2007 prohibiting the use of eminent domain in redevelopment areas to take owner-occupied homes. The Borough’s recent action expands the ban to any type of property where the stated purpose of the taking is for municipal “redevelopment”.

January 2013:

“We don’t have the power to take your property,” Doherty said. “This is not allowed in Belmar nor should it be.”

I’m sorry I thought Gov Murphy was for the Everyman.
Matts 200 grand paycheck turns his political retoric into realism.

Why on earth would the CRDA want that property? The thing with Matt is that there is always an angle. So the CRDA has a budget, and Matt wants to use some of that budget to buy a piece of property to “promote tourism” in AC. How it would promote tourism they can’t say. So the question is (and it’s the only question)what is in it for Matt. This plum chrony position is temporary and subject to NJ’s political mood swings. So my guess is that he is angling for his next move.
And BTW, if a reporter confronted Matt about the inconsistencies between his past comments and his recent actions, he would merely say that his past comments were against using eminent domain for private development. This is for public use. Like I said, he always has the angle.

Doherty also said the Brandywine project (handing over our public buildings to a private developer and not charging him taxes or PILOT money for over 20 years) was “great for Belmar”
