Another Vehicular Assault In Belmar

I believe this was filmed by Bill McKim.  At the very end of the tape the guy in the truck almost runs over the guy on the bike.

But here’s the CDC’s list of gun deaths by state:
    https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/firearm_mortality/firearm.htm

And we really don’t know lots of data about guns: in the home, or what happens to people’s lives when they survived gunshots but can’t work or live in their current home (good to know for economic stats), or even get correct gun death stats (the causes of death reported are often listed as complications from surgery — not mentioned is that surgery was from a gun wound), and so much more.

We would have this info if it weren’t for the Dickey Amendment, who’s creator now laments making it. Lobbyists claim that the CDC is taking an anti gun stance simply by stating results of research and has blocked such data collection.

Guy in truck- “hey man I am so sorry, I didn’t see you in the dark. Are you ok?”

Guy on bike- “Dude, you have to slow down. I know I don’t have lights on my bike and I’ll rectify that tomorrow but please slow down and be vigilant”

Is that too much to ask?

#17- Trump supporters having a vigil for detention “camp”. Is the vigil for the detention camps themselves? I can’t imagine it’s for the children that this administration put in them. What’s next? A Trump supporter vigil for sexually harassed females?
BTW, this current state of immigration policy in this country can be traced to the Reagan administration. Yup. The issue has been brought to the floor of the capital many times and, although both parties are at fault, it’s typically the republicans that refuse to address any meaningful change. Why change it when it makes a great scare tactic during campaign season.
#19 I’m sorry, are you suggesting the the republicans in congress care more about feeding and providing health care for poor children than democrats in congress? The slashing of programs like SNAP and CHIP and medicaid and welfare and list list goes on, is a top priority for Mitch and the gang. Plus (you brought up health insurance) the republicans demanded (during ACA negotiations) that people here illegally should not be able to purchase private health insurance for themselves. Think about that for a second. An illegal immigrant here working, has a family, making money, wants to get blue cross blue shield or aetna or UHC to cover his family. He’ll pay the premiums himself but he can’t. The private insurance companies cannot sell it to him because the republicans in congress at the time were more interested in pandering to their base than using common sense. Yes he’s here illegally and that’s wrong. But stopping him from paying for his OWN health insurance?!? You can look all this stuff.
Before you all blow a gasket- Yes, the democrats in congress also engage in pandering over doing what’s right for the people of the US.
Lastly- #16 The humble Jews of the Warsaw ghettos would’ve defeated the army of the Third Reich if they only had guns? Making that brutal and incomprehensible genocide a gun rights issue is a bit of a stretch.
Yes the second amendment is important. It is also very vague. The First Amendment, which is the most important amendment otherwise the founders wouldn’t have made it first, is not absolute. There are limits to free speech (famously-“you can’t yell fire in a crowded movie house”). So why not limits to the second amendment? No one is saying take all the guns away but my God lets treat it like every other amendment. We apply legal standards based on modern conditions to all the other amendments. Surely that makes sense?
Anyway, bash away people, I’ll do the Christian thing and turn the other cheek. Like the guy in the truck should’ve done.

The take guns comment was just a sarcastic remark… How individuals turned this discussion into gun comments is total nonsense… Any responsible firearms owner would never shoot a person in this car/bike incident… There are 400 million firearms in circulation in the US…. If you take shootings committed by criminals and the mentally ill out of the equation gun violence is extremely low…. The problem is criminals and the mentally ill have more RIGHTS than law abiding citizens… Long live the second amendment….

And Capt. Obvious – what’s obvious to me is the silliness of everyone wanting constant, widespread police presence in Belmar so that even an argument like the one in the video is caught, yet God forbid someone talks about guns — not even taking guns away, just that we need more info because lobbyists and politicians block research.

Next time you put on your seatbelt, pay your car insurance, homeowner’s insurance, property title insurance, stop at a traffic light, show your license at the Wegman’s liquor store, the bank, while booking a hotel, refrain from smoking in public places, complain that the cops aren’t stopping speeders, etc., remember your argument against allowing the CDC to gather information about guns. And then you must follow same argument.

Gathering info about guns is overreaching, yet police have to be everywhere always so people can’t work things out/blow off steam….hmmmmm.

Everyone likes to go after firearms… Moral of the story criminals and mentally ill kill with firearms…. # 21 yes I know there are limits on the second amendment. There are some that believe there shouldn’t be any and that is not a good idea. That’s all I’m saying.
Also, using the holocaust as an argument for gun policy in this country is like using the Crusades as an argument for religious freedom. It’s not realistic and it creates a false reality in my opinion. Yes, maybe if the Jewish slums were armed to the teeth and had military training they would’ve taken out a few nazis before every man, woman, and child was slaughtered. But we’ll never know. Like you said, no crystal ball. Anyway, I AM NOT advocating taking away anyone’s guns. I was pretty clear about that. Just that common sense gun laws are a good thing. Every single police organization in America publicly agrees with that stance. As do you and I, I assume.
#22 criminals and mentally ill (why the mentally ill are lumped in with criminals is beyond me) do not have more rights that law abiding citizens. We all have the SAME rights. It’s called democracy. The constitution gives the same rights to every American citizen. Although if you’re a convicted criminal you actually have less rights. But that’s the price you pay if you are a convicted felon.
I’m not talking about abolishing the second amendment. You don’t have to say ‘long live’, it’s not going anywhere. BTW, I knew you were being sarcastic when you made the comment about taking everyone’s guns. Someone else took issue with that.
    Sorry just wanted to clarify.

If an individual obtains a firearm legally after all that background checking the system has failed…. Meaning the state employees did not do their job properly… Furthermore many times individuals lie on the application and that is a felony which is punishable by prison time…. However the state never proceeds with legal action… Before adding more to this process just properly implement the current laws…

#30 Thanks for the link. But you realize that the Stigma Free Zone is a procedural decision by a local police dept. based on their experience in arresting certain individuals. Police departments make procedural decisions like this all the time. It has nothing to do with the bill of rights offered to every American citizen.
There are parking spaces and bathroom stalls and sidewalk cut outs for the physically disabled. They do not have more rights than you.
When Rush Limbaugh was arrested for having his cleaning woman by illegal prescription pain killers for him, help came from an unlikely group. The ACLU came to his defense saying that his 4th amendment rights were violated. He of course plead guilty and refused their help (bad for business) but the point is-we all have the same rights. It’s one of the many things that makes this country great. I know that it seems like that some criminals have more rights than law abiding citizens but they don’t. There IS a double standard with our judicial system when applying punishment to rich vs poor (think Jeffery Epstein) but that’s also not the same thing.
I appreciate the discussion and I would bet that we see eye to eye on more issues than we disagree about.

It may be politically motivated but there is definitely a public (and police) safety component to these kind of decisions. The problem is that the mentally ill fall through the cracks in our society. We don’t invest a lot of money in making sure that these folks get the care they really need. It goes unchecked until a person w schizophrenia gets into a disturbance and the cops are expected to diagnose and defuse.
But I agree that the urban cops are asked to be therapist, protector, priest, and social worker.
