Airbnb For Driveways?

Here’s my question: is it ethical to park your cars in the street, denying those spots to visitors, in order to free up your driveway to rent out?  To me it’s borderline sleazy.  What do you think?

Comment as you see fit.

It’s sleazy and towns should try to prevent it.

In this town no one needs to hire anyone to rent their driveways and definitely not pay a 20% commission for each use. Remember P.T. Barnum’s quote.

I may be wrong but I believe it is illegal in Belmar to rent your driveway out.

Ethical? No. Legal I’m sure it would be. Some residents already park on street leaving their driveways empty just so “strangers” don’t park in front of their homes.

Businesses are subject to tourism fees so why not collect tourism fees from folks renting their driveway for parking?

I use to feel bad about leaving my driveway open (I always have people call me to park their car in my driveway) but in the last 5-10 years it is expected that the visitors to our beaches spend the day, return to their cars, throw their garbage in the curb and drive off. So I don’t feel bad anymore!

It’s distressing to me that so many people worship money so much that they would do such a thing as rent out their driveway. Also distressing is the thought of a person parking on the street to hurt visitors to our town. This is bad.

Actually, as long as driveway owners don’t move their cars to the street I don’t see this as such a bad thing. There’s such a shortage of parking near the beach and all these empty driveways are a waste of a badly needed resource. It would also cut down on the number of distracted drivers circling the blocks looking for a parking space. This is a big hazard, especially for pedestrians and bicyclists.

I’m kinda laughing here. Just let the town keep overdeveloping and pretty soon we all will be parking somewhere other than our own street.
And come live down South, we are lucky to have seasonal rental and bar parking and they leave not only gabage but urine feces and ( like on my street) used condoms. Just watch Jim Beans video!

Admin, I agree with your sentiment in #10, but I think it is a bit wishful to think cars won’t flood the streets. The simple trade for parking spot owners would be, is it worth $40 to have a strangers car in my driveway? I think with any young entrepreneur’s startup app liability is usually glossed over.

Who pays should the car get scratched while in the driveway? Take it up with BeachIt? I bet they’d sell you out and hide behind their Terms of Service.

This raises a larger point though. Aside from the free electric vehicle rides, which I think are vastly under-marketed and thus underused, and a few ride share drop offs, what steps is Belmar taking towards a future of intelligent mobility? Building a parking deck to alleviate parking concerns is an archaic answer to a problem that technology is currently disrupting. A bike/ride sharing app combined with better drop off zones would allow cars to disperse more evenly among town.

Agreed Dave, but people should just allow people to park in their driveway to be good, friendly people, not to look for any money.
And they should under no circumstances park on the street just to hurt people.

Many parking spaces and revenue were lost on ocean avenue due to a poor design in order to facilitate rock gardens at every intersection. These rocks further make it very dangerous to discharge or pick up passengers at the beach. They also make it unsafe for cyclists who are forced out into traffic during the the other 10 months of the year when no one is parking along Ocean Ave.

Just ban cars for the first 2 blocks off ocean ave and on ocean ave in the summer. It would make the beachfront area safer and calmer.

Too many drunk people coming out of bars near the beach and driving

So that is what all of our neighbors are doing.. recently we have watched our neighbors, who all have ample parking, position their collection of cars strategically on the street in front of our place.. weekdays, weekends..I can see if they are having a party or expecting guests – but they do this everyday.. we have no off street parking. one neighbor has a fleet of SUVs and 2 other vehicles and a driveway to park all of them.. guess who pays more in taxes???
