But if the salaries are unaffordable for Lake Como, why would they be affordable for Belmar?

If you read the story, the writers only tangentially mention the costs of administration and facilities. They really blame the unaffordable cost squarely on high police salaries and benefits.
I am assuming that currently we don’t have more police officers than we need. At least I’m hoping we don’t. So if we’re going to patrol 35% more neighborhoods, answer 35% more calls for assistance, write 35% more tickets, arrest 35% more people and make 35% more court appearances, we’re going to need 35% more cops and 35% more cars. And it’s not worth doing if we’re only going to break even. There would need to be a significant and measurable benefit to the taxpayers of Belmar to make it even worth considering.

The same thing should be done to DPW also! You got a DPW admin who does nothing but joyride around town. You have another guy that constantly gets drunk during his lunch hour. Another that does nothing but hangs out at sunrise and 7-11 and does scratch off’s all day, and finally the 4th who hangs around the yard playing on his phone. The guys don’t pick up trash anymore. All they do is collect brush and pick up leaves, oh and snow removal, which belmar helps out with anyways.
DPW needs to be given pink slips also.
Hey guys, appreciate the input but we get the point.
Just a little history for anyone who may be interested. In 1965 John V. Lindsay was elected mayor of NYC. His first order of business was to negotiate a labor contract with the transit workers (Mike Quill president TWU)in the city. Through his total ignorance of practical affairs and pay scales that existed (he was a lawyer), he made a huge mistake in those negotiations and completely upset the applecart of municipal pay. Once he made that pact, obviously all the other unions wanted their “share.” After that, everything changed, but not just in the city, the ripple effect crossed the nation. We are seeing those effects all around us daily. Those effects are bankrupting all sorts of municipalities. Right here in N.J., we have multiple cities which are in fact bankrupt and have been for some years (they just don’t use that word but they are wards of the state anyway). Of course, in the future, we will see states go bankrupt, we just don’t know which state will be first. But it could be us and one of the main reasons would be the wage scales of the state, county and municipal workers across the state.

I didn’t talk about the massive number of people on the dole here because that’s another subject.
1.Sounds like you are describing Belmar DPW.I wonder if these activities are a part of the job discription. Sorry just a bit of sarcastic humor this morning.I’m sure everyone’s got the point.
Get the point about what? Why is it fair to layoff the police department, but not dpw? They have the same benefits, same sick and vacation times, the only difference is the pay and the raises..
I’m not saying to lay off any Belmar cops. Lake Como can do whatever they want. I don’t think we should get involved.
As far as DPW goes, we’ve heard what you guys have been saying. Hopefully it’s not true. If any of it is true, hopefully it will be addressed.
I’m glad your leaves were picked up.
POLICE OFFICERS ARE CRITICAL TO RESIDENTS OF BELMAR. The more professionally trained, with at least Associate Degrees in Criminal Justice should be the norm. Some NYC Police Officers with crowd control experience and seasoned psychological backgrounds would be the ticket.
6:Admin, The only way it can be addressed is if we have people like you to speak up for us. There has been a handful of us making the same allegations about dpw employees for belmar and lakecomo, we’re not making up stories. What we’re saying are factual and they need to be addressed.
Drop a dime to prosecutor’s office and let them do the job.
#8 – Sir, I don’t know where or when this concept of Formal education started, but it’s way out of hand. All that’s needed to be an efficient police officer is normal intelligence and a good body. All these supposed “credentials” don’t amount to a hill of beans.
#11- Sir I learned 33 years ago the three C’c of Policework. Common sense, Compassion, and Courage, in any order. It works.
#12 – Agreed…
Da 3 C’s of police work: cronyism, cocaine and COORS!!! Let’s do dis DJais STEEZ dough.
