I’m staying on land
20th was up with three guards.
Incredible. Watch out for the Public Advocate Cooleen. They must be trying another budget reduction scam again. You get what you pay for Cooleen and it ain’t U.
Do they really think no one will notice this is happening?
From belmar.com: “Lifeguards are on duty between the hours of 9 am and 5:30 pm on the weekdays, and between the 9 am and 7 pm on the weekends.”
Many schools (teacher guards) still in session.
The Belmar Beach Patrol has never been so unorganized. It’s in complete disarray. Go ask any guard who’s been there more than 2 years if you dont believe me.
Teacher guards still being in school is not an excuse for stands being down. This is a beach town. We’re supposed to be equipped and plan for this well in advance.

#11 – This is what passes for a “heat wave?” Give me a break. Everybody’s getting so soft, it isn’t even funny anymore.
These last few days of school are 1/2 days. Had nothing to do with the temperature.
Chief Huiseman, BA Connolly, Councilman McGovern, Doherty and the rest of the puppets know they screwed up by changing leadership when it wasn’t broken. Now they have egg all over their faces and can’t get it off.
A beautiful day today and I noticed 5 stands down between 5th and 15th.

8th Avenue was down for several hours in the morning for the past few days, and down again before 5:30 today. One of the busiest beaches in town is not staffed full-time.
Why does anyone believe that changing the administration has anything to do with stands being down? Remember that this is a problem CREATED by the old administration. They had stands down on busy days for years. The attrition of lifeguards over the past few years is, at least in part, caused by the old administration, particularly Harry Harsin. The new leadership has done more to try to attract new lifeguards than the previous guys ever did. But the bottom line is that not everyone who applies is qualified and it takes years to cultivate a strong, reliable staff of returning lifeguards that can then be complimented by young, new lifeguards each year to learn the beach. This is not a problem that will be solved by Coleen advertising wherever she can this summer. This will take time. But it’s not the new guys fault. And we wouldn’t be better off with the old guys.
Please tell me what experience Colleen Connelly has to orchestrate how a beach should be run. She should be working at Merrimaker’s Cruz Bay and “run” food to the beach patrons.
At least this way she could see what the beach looks like.

Low unemployment rates don’t bode well for Lifeguards. 6 day work weeks – 8 hour days for $10 hour won’t attract too many young people.
So Harry is the reason the Administration paid low lifeguard wages? Wasn’t glory of working with the finest a measure of employment?
College has been over for a month. There’s many people in the Ocean. Its dangerous out there folks 9 months out of the year. When will xx. Brain. increase his T levels and tell Connelly to shove off. Mitigating damages now is what needs to be done. Make nice get the A team back. open wide insert your feet and try swallowing your shoe.
The beach was always run smoothly by the old staff, never any issues that I observed. They were always extremely professional and always very helpful and i am on the beach quite a lot! So far this summer with the so called “new direction”, we have had more stands down then i have ever seen, let alone 4 guys driving around in one quad looking lost all day, why don’t they sit on a stand and do something productive? The old crew always did the best with what little they were given. Also why do you think some of the lifeguards didn’t return…they didn’t want to be a part of the sh*t show that it is NOW!
The truth is that interest in being an ocean lifeguard has been diminishing for the past few years. It’s not isolated to just Belmar, it’s all shore towns. Kids today dont want to go through the rigorous testing and certifications for low wages. You can advertise all you want, people know these jobs exist they just dont have the drive to try out.
Belmars issue,being one of the busiest beaches at the shore, is that they upset the apple cart causing major disruption amongst the ranks. It’s not the fault of the prior administration, they made it work with what little they had. The experience of the guards carried them. The present administration has their hands full and they know it.
It’s time for a resolution to buy 2 dozen blow up dolls to use as fake lifeguards on the stands problem solved and they work for free lol
#24 – well said sir. I’ll add that anything that has to do with the outdoors is looked upon as beneath many young people’s dignity. Plus they’re not used to being outside for many hours at a time. Then there’s the small point that I strongly suspect they can’t measure up to the standards of the swimming test (of course that will never be said). At some point the standard will be lowered while our government officials loudly deny the standard is being lowered as we see it being lowered right before your eyes.
#26 Your right. Standards already lowered by dropping the age requirement by two years to 16. Also by having the tryout test in a cozy pool instead of the ocean which is where they’ll be working.

Please do not forget it was our former mayor Matt Doherty who told the news media that the reason they were going in a new direction is because HE saw stands down and that meant “mismanagement”.
Our BA acting chief and interim mayor obviously went along as usual.
Sooo. If stands are down now (and there are every time I’m on the beach) not to mention big tents (aren’t they against ordinance too?) doesn’t that mean MISMANAGEMENT???
If all of the complaints I am reading are true which I do not doubt the way to solve the problem is to remove the
Problem and vote against them when they run. A new approach is definitely needed. To think someone may loose a life because of stupidity and stubborn-ness is beyond belief. What is and has happened to this town is pitiful. FIX IT.
$9 to go to the beach in Belmar per adult and the Belmar beaches are mostly closed to swimming.
Belmar beach is a shitshow this summer.
The lifeguard staff has been low for a few years. As to guards not coming back. I spoke to my local guards and at their beach all are back but two because they got careers. I commend the new management for trying to get more, as to Colleen and crew I hope they back these poor souls and don’t crucify them next.
This is really misleading reporting.
It’s June, lifeguard stands should be down. Our beaches are nowhere near capacity. The ocean is still too cold for most to do anything longer than a dip. Look at any of the previous summer’s beach revenue reports and you’ll see that June is minuscule in terms of daily badges sold.
Also 12th-16th Ave may sound vast and unguardable for one stand, but let’s break this down. 12th and 16th are both Jettys that swimmers are whistled at if they get too close. 1 stand set up between 3 beaches is perfectly safe for lifeguards that are well-trained and attentive.
Matt Doherty told the news media that the stands he saw down meant MISMANAGEMENT. Again I ask, if that was the case last year why is it not the case now.
Perhaps if the borough paid our guards more money the previous management would have been able to attract more guards. Plus they new management dropped the age to 16 Plus they did a pool swim not an ocean swim. Lower standards.
And Spring Lake now has some of Belmar’s finest.
