In my story last week I reported hearing that at least one of the boardwalk restaurants that we are supplying trailers for was paying less than half of what the trailer was costing us.
If only.
When asked to vote on the subject (at the 55:00 mark in the tape below of Wednesday’s meeting) Councilman Bean asked Mayor Doherty for the actual numbers. Let’s just say the mayor seemed a little uncomfortable talking about it.
Annie’s Ocean Grill is paying $17,000 for a trailer that is costing us over $40,000 plus utilities.
10th Ave Freeze Out is paying $13,500 for a trailer that is costing us over $40,000 plus utilities.
Jake’s Crab Shack is paying $10,000 for a trailer that is costing us over $40,000 plus utilities.
Exit 98 is leasing a trailer as well. They are paying $8200. I don’t know how much their trailer is costing us, but I’m sure it’s a lot more than $8200. (I guess the mayor felt that lack of convenient access to a boutique would have “detracted from the experience” of our visitors.)
There’s a reason why leases are null and void if the leased property is destroyed. It is because the law can not require someone to do something that he can not do. As the owners of Belmar, you and I can not provide a building to a commercial establishment if we no longer have a building to provide. Unfortunately, Doherty and the Democrats are going to force us to do it anyway. And whether the cost is borne by us as badge buyers or as taxpayers, it represents an outrageous waste of our money.

In another action, the council re-affirmed it’s policy of total denial of dignity and human rights for Smoker-Americans and voted once again to keep us in cages far from our friends and families. I hereby ask the council that if they must keep us in cages, can they at least provide umbrellas and put the cages closer to the water?
I hired an artist to create a rendition of my proposed compromise:
