If you lose the department, you lose the town … It would not be the same as having your own department in the boundaries of Lake Como.
*Lake Como Police Chief Fred Hope
.
The request for proposal will be submitted to the four towns that share a border with Lake Como — Wall Township, Belmar, Spring Lake and Spring Lake Heights.
“Belmar seems like a natural fit. Their police work very closely with our police,” said (borough administrator Louise) Mekosh. “A lot of the issues our town faces, so does Belmar.”

The biggest issue the Belmar PD faces is D’Jais. For the Lake Como PD it’s Bar A. Why would we want both problems? Anyway, they changed their name because they wanted to have a separate identity from Belmar. I think if they want to use our police department they should change their name back to South Belmar.
BTW, the two towns looked at merging their police departments in 2010 but Pringle couldn’t muster the political support he needed, even from his fellow Democrats on the Council. On top of that there was a disagreement on who would be the chief. Lake Como wanted Fred Hope to be the chief and Belmar wanted Tom Palmisano.
I keep hearing that Palmisano is going to be retiring soon. If we do merge the combined departments will probably have a brand new chief. Any guesses who might get the job?

Tom is to young to retire
Here’s my guess, Belmar will take over policing of Lake Como, both chiefs are out, there will be a director appointed by the Belmar mayor, probably Mike Campbell. Like you state in this post, why would Belmar want the headache ?
More tickets, More revenue. Aaron Liller gets paid, no matter what. Drink hardy my friends.
Next to merge would be dpw and then layoffs! There should be reduced force in police department with layoffs too! Or have a hiring freeze.
Word has it, that the current Belmar Police Chief, is not going anywhere until his Fishermans Den Lease/contract is renewed and in place.
#5 that makes sense
last time checked …. 43 of 53 towns are connecting to Monmouth County’s smart radio dispatch system …. Lake Como should consider before deciding.
Belmar might consider doing the same thing if they really wanted to save money.
I thought we were part of the county 911 system anyway. We can still connect to local police if you know the telephone number 732-681-1700, and the press this, press that la de dah.
