At the JFK Plaza, five nuns were swarmed by tourists as they took a group photo in front of Philadelphia’s iconic Love sculpture. Although the city is known for its gruffness, the nuns, members of the Sisters of St. Joseph the Worker, said locals have been courteous hosts. People had gone out of their way to help them carry packages.

“It’s been great. The City of Brotherly Love has been living up to its reputation,” Mother Christine Murray said.

“Everyone has been so kind. The residents should be proud,” chimed in Sister Margaret Perez.

Chris Brandl towed his food booth, Jake’s Crab Shack, from Belmar, N.J. with purely mercantile goals. He’s curious if there’s room to expand his business west into Philadelphia, and he saw the massive crowd expected on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as a perfect test.

As he hauled 5,000 meals of lobster rolls, crab cakes and egg sandwiches into the city, his business savvy wavered. He began thinking of his late father, a faithful Catholic who died five years ago.

“It was an emotional ride,” Brandl said. “He always listened to the pope. He would have liked this one. He’s a really laid back kind of dude.”
