I have a feeling the Mayor has never apologized to anyone in his life. He should have said the whole situation was handled poorly and I’m sorry for that. A real shame. Let’s see how many qualified guards they get for this summer. Makes me afraid to step foot in the water.

  4. I must say I am very impressed with how passionate and articulate these lifeguards have been throughout this ordeal. They are the true professionals not this mayor, council and boro administrator. Good luck to them.

Another point here not noticed is the one guy said they gave a test and few people were able to pass it. The beach is outdoors, therefore our young people won’t do well on any test that takes place outside. It’s just another indication that points in the direction that our young people are not up to par, but goes unnoticed. If they could give a “virtual” test, maybe that would be better. All anyone has to do is look at our young people and they know we’ve got a big, big problem (What you see at these meetings are the cream or the crop with our young people obviously – not the usual out of shape young person). Very interesting times we live in.

Defiant Doherty “pushes back” his chair instead of stepping down from the dais when he recused himself. He cannot follow simple rules, so how can he be expected to follow any rules? What a crumb.

Stupid is as stupid does……Doherty, Connolly, Huisman, Brennan,McGovern & Nicolay. Do any of the previous mentioned know who really telling the truth? You can’t make this level of incompetence up. Matt sits there texting and not paying attention to anything that’s going on and lies about who knows what. I’m sure he’ll wear his his welcome out in AC and his pally the Governor will start to realize what an inept person Matt really is. The house of lies is crumbling and they will pay. They’ll reap what they sow. Who’s next to get thrown under the bus and they’ll Lie about that…..is this a bad dream Dad? No Son this is Belmar…..game on….plan for the Summer and fast…

My family has been down in Belmar for over 50 years and all I can say is that we look forward to the summers down in BELMAR, the only beach we will ever go to! Not because of the beachfront, that is ridiculously overcrowded, but for the lifeguards! We know them like family and nothing feels better than going to “your beach” in the summer. I am sure most of us can agree that not only are they pretty nice to look at but we have all come to know “our guards” personally, they are like our summer beach family. They work harder than any borough employee that I know and make a huge impact on each person that steps foot into the water. They should be THANKED for the hard work and dedication that they have given to Belmar, not scrutinized. It truly is a shame to think about this upcoming summer in such a negative light. We are a small town where everyone knows your name, this is just another piece that is being ripped away from what Belmar should value. Dating a lifeguard myself, I see how hard they work. They wake up everyday go to their stand and then sometimes work two or three more jobs after guarding. If the stands are down, it is most likely because they are helping an elderly person down the handicapped matts on the beach wheelchairs because they are the only ones strong enough to do so or they may be looking for a lost child’s family, some may even be running their their first aid kits to help a patron or beachfront employee bandage up a splintered toe or a twisted ankle. MOST of the time they are in the water, saving inexperienced swimmers from drowning near the jetty. They barely can take a bathroom break because they are worried about not watching the water, their lunch breaks all happen at the same time on the STANDS because they know they are unable to leave their post. They put safety first and their own needs last. Don’t fix something that is not broken.

Like they said, lifeguard for life. Once one goes, they all go.

  14. I am so happy that this arrogant ass is finally leaving. He has ruined our town. Just wait till all those bonds and loans become due. Can you say tax increase? I guess his stellar resume and qualifications got him this political, no background check, political hack job.
I am sad for the people of Atlantic City who are already in a financial boondoggle. Be warned, this guy cares about no one but his egotistical, pompous self.

Boggles the mind to try an understand what we have done to our Belmar guards. To what purpose? I enjoy early mornings on the beach during the season. Anyone who is there at this time of day can see the daily drills, training, and leadership that is put forth that makes these guards so good at what they do. Why did we jeopardize this?

You know what I don’t understand is how they can keep lying.. have they no shame? Don’t they want their children to be proud of them? Don’t they want when people speak of Matt Doherty and Colleen the adjectives attributed to them are honest, hardworking , integrity, morale and virtuous ????

How does this duo feel good about taking jobs they are NOT qualified for and everyone surrounding them knows it’s not “what they know but who they know??? ”

Doesn’t that mean anything to anyone anymore???!!!

All this mayor and his b.a. are doing is taking a good staff and destroying it. This will cause the best employees to flee and the remainder to lose all motivation.

I’m sure that the ones who are applying for the Supervisor positions have no idea how to fill the shoes of the outstanding foursome that we currently have.
I’m glad that they mayor is so “confident” that they will fill all the positions..lol…good luck with that.
Do you and your b.a. even know what your are looking for? I think not. You two have no idea how a successful beach is run. You came in and set up your Merrimakers in a sweet spot on the beach…and meanwhile let the lifeguards work out of a tiny garage since Sandy til 4th of July weekend of 2017. They had to run equipment back and forth to the 3rd Ave garage every single day…you should be ashamed..and your “beautiful lifeguard headquarters” is leaking like a sieve…doors put on incorrectly so that if there is a nor’easter the water will pour in. Did you even bother to sit down with the guards and first aid people to see how it should have been set up to get emergency lifeguard and first aid equipment easily accessible? No it was just a shell but I’m sure you sat down with Merrimakers to see what they needed.
You have turned this town into a joke!!
Glad to see you go!! Bye Felicia

Mayor Matt said reporters make stuff up. Combine things to make a salacious headline? This is quote in the CBS story. If untrue wouldn’t Colleen (or Drew)have asked for a retraction or correction

“He felt it was time to make sure lifeguards had all of the resources that they needed, that proper staffing levels, policies, procedures, and coordination with all of our first responders was available,” Belmar Business Administrator Colleen Connolly said.

Would love to know if it was on original plans or a last minute concession for colleen’s former employer?

When he is gone, we cannot forget those that stood by and enabled him to step all over good people in this town. MaGovern, Huisman, Brennan, Connolly, Nicolay, etc. We cannot let them off easy. They need to be held accountable for their actions (or lack of action). They need to a higher standard than other residents. They failed this town.

This is so pathetic and NOT what the town needs–more negative publicity and yet another lawsuit, I am sure. What a great way to keep summer tourists out of Belmar and off the beaches! I hope when the townspeople decide to “GO IN A NEW DIRECTION” that the Mayor, Huisman, Connolly, McGovern, and Nicolay all find a new career making between $10 and $15.00 an hour! Although, in my opinion they are not even worth that. Maybe they can all apply for a job as a server at SALT. I am so ready for new leadership in this town.
