Did Colleen resign? Magovern states that new Mayor will be choosing the BA?
With the good news that a highly qualified CFO was picked, I wound up skipping the meeting and helping my parents move last night. As of today they are no longer Belmar residents after 43 years.
Just wanted to say how thrilled I am that we are in good hands with the new administration and new CFO. But we have one more unknown – the council seat that Mark Walsifer leaves is open. I think Mark Levis is the best man for the job. He gets along well with Mark Walsifer and a 3/2 split Republican/Democrat council is a great way to balance the town’s interests. Let’s let Levis continue what he started with the park commission, storm mitigation research, and more.
#2 I disagree……….Get some new blood in!!!! If you are against that get Jim Bean sworn in
I’ll run a poll on Sunday. Send in your suggestions.
Jim Bean has demonstrated throughout his years on the council and post council, that he is honest and will fight for the well being of all Belmar residents. I hope that he would return to the council.
Is Jim Bean new blood? And Mark Levis has been around for a few months. That’s new
Brennan’s presence has enough weight for the Democrats. There is fair and there is fair. Levis can “do good” on a commission.
Didn’t ML break ranks with his “Team”? Does he want the GOP committee to vote ML as their GOP recommendation to our New Mayor? If so, he should take the initiative and personally advocate for himself bc he’s honorable?
He should change parties.
#6 I said “Get some new blood in!!!! If you are against that get Jim Bean sworn in. I didn’t just say get Jim Bean sworn in. Mark Lewis is a Democrat. We need a Conservative. Find one or get Jim Bean back. Thanks AILEEN
Jim Bean on council would keep everyone honest. He’s proven that many times.
I know for a fact Frank, would love ML to be on council. That should be reason enough not to select him.How about the guy who ran with Mark, I think his name is Josh.
Beach badges for the Scoff law 15 year olds absolutely necessary. $10.
INCREASE Seniors to $20.
Regular $60
Mike Seebeck has shown a high level of commitment towards Belmar, has run for council where he garnered many votes. He deserves to be in the running for the open seat. Mark Levis choose to be a Democrat and can run again next November.
Can the incoming council put a 5 minute limit on each report of the mayor and council? Brennan just drones on and on.
Any candidate can run in the Primary Election. February start the campaign season all over again.
Happy Thanksgiving all.
While you at it looking for qualified Republicans to fill Walsifer’s vacant seat, Vickie Renner for council.
OK, a move in the right direction with the clean sweep, but now is the time to initiate a movement to change the form of government to one in which there is not a strong mayor, to something like that in Avon, before the new guys get too comfortable in their newly found power, and end the divisiveness of party politics. Belmar is too small for us-against-them thinking.
I agree #18. Pringle initiated the strong mayor from of government. It should go back to the way it was when Pyanoe and Taylor were mayor. Much more peaceful.
#18 Yes!!
Avon by the Sea Seasonal Beach Badges:
18 to Adult $90;
12 to 18 young adults $45;
65 or older Senior $45
Sound about right to me.
#21 Belmar is not Avon
#18 Agree
Create a summer teenager badge at $15 and create a teanager daily at $5 why should everyday day camp come to belmar for free each summer trip
Under 12 free
13-18 $15
Adults $65
Seniors 65 $25
Daily
Teens $5.00
Adults unchanged
Bring in more money with less people we will all be happy and able to invite ourfriends and family to a place they can park near our homes!
Agree with Vickie Renner for council. She deserves it more than anyone..talk about a belmar native
That’s right #22, Avon is smaller and we’ll managed!
#18/19 – Belmar was hardly “peaceful” in the 1980’s and ended in a lop-sided recall election in June of 1990. A month later the residents voted overwhelming (by a 3-1 margin if I recall correctly) to change the form of government. The report of the Belmar Charter Study Commission, which I chaired, identified three main problems with the 3-person Commission form of government. First, because the Open Public Meetings Act prohibits a quorum of elected officials from discussing municipal business except at an advertised public meeting, elected officials in Commission towns end up communicating and conducting all of their non-public business through the Business Administrator. Second, the terms of the elected officials were concurrent, with all 3 commissioners elected every four years. That’s a long time to wait between elections. Our current form has staggered terms, which gives the voters a chance to send a message to their governing body every year. Third, the mayor is not directly elected under the Commission form. Whatever you think of our current form of government (and, believe it or not, our Small Municipality Plan is not a “strong mayor” form of government), a directly elected mayor is better able to set a vision for a community and carry it out. That may not matter much for a sedate, established town like Avon. But it mattered a great deal to Belmar in 1990, and enabled us to change the course of community.
One change we might want to think about, however, is changing our current form of government to a non-partisan form. The Charter Study Commission recommended the partisan option because we believed that staggered terms were very important. At that time, however, non-partisan elections could only be held in May. That would have meant elections in May and November of every year. We were concerned that voters would become fatigued, and less likely to vote in municipal elections. The law has since been changed to allow non-partisan elections to be held on the November ballot. Bradley Beach has our same form of government (they shifted away from the Commission form a few years after we did), but they chose the non-partisan option and concurrent terms. They now hold their municipal elections in November.
Shifting to a non-partisan form, would allow candidates to run together, regardless of their party affiliation, and without having to navigate the party committee and primary process.
But for now, let’s all work with our newly elected officials to get Belmar back on track, and make our town the best it can be.
#13/12/23 — By statute, municipalities cannot charge beach fees to those 15 and under. And must charge the same fee to those 16 and over, except for seniors and the disabled.
27: i just don’t understand why the Council Attorney didn’t advise Brian of the Statute at the meeting?
Thank you, Mr. Pringle, for your enlightenment. Much appreciated and hopefully considered.
The type of government as explained by KP makes sense, however it is the voters that continued to vote the past knuckleheads to continue their mayhem. Violating civil rights preventing a tree planting, allowing a Business Administrator to help get her former employer get a financial edge to a bid to name a few events.
Mr. Pringle, I admire your efforts to remove the Doherty/Connolly administration (even though you brought him here). I remember quite well the recall petition you launched against then mayor Hernandez. I believe it had a lot to do with the midnight bar closing.
I do agree that the election should be non partisan in such a small town and the mayor should not yield as much power as he does. You mentioned Avon. I wish we had a resident friendly administration like they do. On this Thanksgiving day I am thankful for the new administration coming in and wish them the best getting our town back to the way the residents want it to be. Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Happy Thanksgiving, all. And thanks to Dave and fellow residents for continuing to record and post council meetings.
If municipalities cannot charge beach fees to those 15 and under, how do all of our surrounding towns get away with it? Asbury, Avon, Bradley, Manasquan, even Ocean Grove all offer junior badges (anywhere from 13 to 18 years old) with kids 12 and under free.
I would also like the council to address the extra $1 surcharge on each badge when you purchase with a credit or debit card. I get that they need to cover costs but $1 PER BADGE is ridiculous. No one carries cash anymore. How much are we actually paying to the credit card companies, or rather, how much is the town being charged per transaction/badge? Is that in the beach utility report?
#27 – False, but we all know your real talent is just sounding like you know everything…

#32 They get away with it because there is no one to enforce the beach fee statute. Gov. Christie eliminated the Public Advocate position. Even when we had a Public Advocate, the last time he sued to enforce the beach fee statute was in Slocum v. Belmar, which was decided in 1989. The reason our Susko v. Belmar case was important is that the trial court agreed with our argument that a violation of the beach fee statute constitutes a violation of the New Jersey Civil Rights Act, which entitled the plaintiffs to recover their attorneys fees. If that decision is upheld on appeal, towns will either begin complying with the law, or face lawsuits and attorney fee awards if they are compelled to do so.
Thankful that we can all express our own insights without bias and personal negativity on this blog. It’s like a gratitude journal that we can all share together.
Jealousy be gone in this journal, please. Adolescent jabs aren’t constructive as you well know. There are new days a comin’. Let’s rejoice.
I understand that there are, in addition to the queen of mean’s potential reappointment, a number of positions up for consideration. Any opinions here?
So if BA not reappointed she is out of a job?

SHES OUT!
#35-I agree with you 100%! Some remarks posted on this blog are child-like. Name calling, insults that have no meaning, exaggerations and make-believe stories. Let’s keep things real and on the up and up. Legitimate criticisms are welcome and eye-opening. Let’s keep comments objective and on an adult level without name-calling and nonsensical remarks .
No such thing as Whistle Blowers in Government. If it was private owned anything they would be screaming to the high heavend in all those little towns charging for youth badges.
#39 – Let’s keep comments objective and on an adult level
—————————————
No, I absolutely rsfeue to act on an adult level.
Thank you Dave for all of your hard work and tireless efforts over the years with this blog to bring Belmar to this historic moment. You have finally been able to cure Belmar of its ELECTILE DISFUNCTION and get people to use some common sense. Thank you.
