Sources tell me that CAFRA has told Belmar that it may NOT sink any pilings for the new Taylor Pavilion until it has been confirmed that the building will sit on the EXACT SAME FOOTPRINT as the original Taylor. The site for the new building is reportedly 28 feet east of where it’s supposed to be, and if this is true, it would be intruding on valuable coastal property and in violation of CAFRA rules.
The pilings that were driven Wednesday with great fanfare and ceremony and the ones driven yesterday are only for the access ramp.

Just so we are clear the entire pavilion has been moved 23 feet easterly toward the ocean without ANY environmental impact study.
We have lost precious dry sand beach a natural resource that is rapidly disappearing in New Jersey. We lost the opportunity to speak our opinions for review regarding a CAFRA permit.
Sadly this town is being run by those politicians with authority to play games, give and take favors, and prioritize self serving interests.

You will hear the pavilion was moved 23 feet easterly to comply with ADA ramps necessary to meet flood elevations. This is not quite accurate but you will hear it.
The ADA compliant access could have been achieved with a redesign or alternate location. The law requires an attempt to solve the issue without taking dry sand beach. There was never an alternative plan considered.
Keep in mind that the reason we need extra ramping is because we rushed to build the boardwalk so it is 5 feet below flood elevation.
Also the height of the building is over 29 feet from the boardwalk.
Specifically constructed to easily add a second floor.
This is your town Belmar residents should contact the DEP hotline 1-877-WARNDEP and make a formal complaint. I am not a lawyer but I read the law, the pavilion requires a new CAfRA permit.
This is a another political decision that hurts Belmar.
I believe that anyone with a sharpie were allowed to sign the piling so there’s that. Claire has served Belmar for years as a teacher as well as Boro council so even if you disagree with her she’s more qualified to sign a piling than most of the anonymous bomb throwing trolls on this blog (whether you agree with them or not). Thank you, Claire. It’s really disheartening that we are celebrating a structure while our homes around Lake Como are at risk. As a mother, I’m sure you’ll appreciate the fact that I never want to explain to my children that their things are gone. Matt does not care about “the needs of the residents” or this would be the first celebration.

In Belmar, they have reached a tipping point. No flowery speeches, campaign rhetoric, promises… will solve the problem. The only way the majority of residents can “move forward” is to assure the reestablishment of frank dialog and the insistence on EQUITY.

According to my understanding of the article in the April 7th Coast Star regarding the launch of the Taylor Pavilion construction, the Borough is ignoring the Gummer decision with the assumption that they will win a future appeal. The start of construction now seems premature to me. What if they lose the appeal and construction is well under way, and I do not mean the wooden piles already driven by the boardwalk. What is the rush to build about? Gain sympathy about having to remove piles and wasting money they do not and will not have? (Sorry, taxpayers, we have no choice but to increase your taxes if you want that pavilion.) Of course the apparent necessity of a CAFRA permit makes things worse. But, hey, Doherty got his strategic photo op and bragging rights.

Status of anything. Simple questions. Should have immediate response of a status. This body knows. Appears that they don’t want residents to know. If Ms. Claire asked someone at the Borough a question, an immediate reply should have been given. They know what is going on. Doesn’t take days for them to figure it out.
#39-Betty-This post is especially for you…..as a mother and grandmother, I certainly understand your concerns . To answer questions about when the outflow pipe will be installed, a letter is going out from the borough administrator to residents who are impacted with flooding issues at the south end of town. Here is the information I received: many agencies are involved with the installation of the pipe, and they aren’t always quick to respond to finalizing details. We wanted the pipe installed yesterday-they don’t realize our urgency. Environmental concerns have to be addressed, and permits must be put in place. As a former councilwoman, these types of situations, much to my chagrin when I was on the council, take an inordinate amount of time. Apparently state and federal agencies are on overload with sorting through issues impacting various communities. Frustration was what I experienced when things didn’t move along as quickly as I had wanted. Betty, I hope my comments allay some of your concerns. Look for the letter from the borough office; perhaps more of your questions/concerns will be addressed. If I learn more on the topic, I’ll address you personally on this blog.

What i believe is the outflow pipe money isnt there anymore and the mayor and council are trying to figure out how to come up with the money.
#64 My opinion – what is “between the lines” is that there are too many rules to follow because federal money is involved and there are most likely no pals within those other agencies to facilitate matters and the usual favored contractor(s) cannot be used. Thanks admin. Basically put the damn pipe in. I think that the mayor feels that he looks better by pushing the pavilions along than by pushing the outflow pipe along. Which in turn shows that he is not concerned with the people on the south end. With all of the illegal stuff that goes on in Belmar it would have been smarter for the mayor to do the outflow pipe first because by the time the pipe was done the start of the pavilions would have been started and everybody would have already forgotten about the pipe.

I gave council people ear-fulls when they tied the Outfall pipe to the pavilion bond, and I personally questioned council people about the pavilions and Community Disaster Loan. They were unaware about the CDL and they never got back to me about its status. Ridic!

An opinion is not an accusation. This is a place for opinions. I have mine and others have theirs. The truth is certainly not apparent. The people cannot be duped all the time. The families of the South End have been ignored by Mayor and Council because we pushed for our lake to be fixed as a priority over the pavilions. Since we “disappointed” them, my fear is that the money will be spent and it will never be remediated. I’m grateful that you, as a fellow lifelong resident, understand what this town used to be about.
Wake up Belmar has no money , why do you think this money grab with Lake Como PD is happening ? The town will be paying the lions share of the pavilions when it is all said and done. Even if Matt’s pipe dream of an appeal goes through at best he will get a larger % say it goes from 4% to 15% is that really going to make a difference ? The time to pay the piper is coming it not going away. The town is going to over runs already due to the fact that they cant read a survey or know what a footprint is.

I for one want to be on the record going forward ( especially since Tom Burke trashed him recently on this very topic) that as someone who voted for Jim Bean, he did the right thing. If you watch the video of the meeting I highlighted and others, he would not vote just to vote. If he had no time to study it he abstained. Hence Bean’s Rule. If he disagreed with an expenditure , but the borough paid it before a vote, he abstained. Hence Bean’s Rule. If he had to OPRA it, he did, he he then had to investigate it, he did.
