You know I love Italians just as much as the next guy…maybe even more than most next guys because I actually married one…but I’m 60 years old and if I live the rest of my life without ever passing another zeppole stand I wouldn’t feel I missed out on life.
Or zeppolis if you want to spell it that way, which you can, but the apostrophe doesn’t belong there in any spelling. Common mistake.
Anyway, I certainly don’t want to get in the way of folks who still haven’t had enough zeppole or zeppolis or whatever you want to call them, or any of the other health foods being advertised in the above photo, but do they need to disrupt the lives of our residents and do all this in the middle of Main Street?
My suggestion would be to take the Seafood Festival, the Feast of San Gennaro, and the Fall Festival, now called Oktoberfest in recognition of Belmar’s newly rejuvenated drinking culture, and move them all to the County fairgrounds where they won’t be in anybody’s way.
Does anybody agree? Let’s find out.

Other than disrupting the lives of the people who actually live in this town there isn’t any sense for any of these ‘festivals’.
….or move them to one of the parks, or the marina or boro hall parking lot. Let the boro handle it on their property and not the streets.
And take with them to the County Park System all of the silly 5ks and 10ks walks and runs. The cost in traffic controls and the inconveniences to the residents and motoring public is out of control. Could be done at a quarter of the cost and in a much safer atmosphere. Combine a Run with a Feast at the same time. Novel idea.
I agree with you Dave. But then again I’m not one for walking around in big crowds, in the sun, for food I can get at a restaurant in town and actually SIT down and eat it. But some people LOVE to go to street fairs. Go figure!!!
We need to go back to the basics in Belmar and hold community events and trash this mentality of being a major hosting venue.
FESTIVUS…for the rest of us.
Considering that beach revenues are down 12%
for 2017, Mary Brabazon should take a 12% cut in salary and the Council should replace all members of the Tourism Commission with people who can get the job done.
Thank you for mentioning the “rejuvenated drinking culture” here in Belmar. I though that only I was noticing this lately.
Street meat rules!
How about a red light district like in Amsterdam or Paris? Use those military vehicles for hooking up. Makes weird sense to me.
98% of “festival” is food trucks.
$6.00 for one canolli!! Price gouging!
It’s because Hurricane Jose caused a cannoli shortage
Do the fall events on the 12 million dollar boardwalk, that would give the residents an opportunity to enjoy their investment
Lose the festivals on Main St. Was standing on Main St yesterday wondering if the bus could even arrive. No major events should be held on Main St or ocean ave as they endanger safety
Belmar does not have the parking, or room for any kind of festival. Who benefits from the festivals?? Certainly not the local food merchants or the residents that call the pd to call a tow truck for their blocked driveway, or the residents that want to have a family bbq or gathering and are embarrassed their relatives cannot find a place to park.
Couldn’t get to Taylor hardware without dodging people. Don’t drive anymore so I had walk a longer distance.
I’m in the clear minority here, but I think family friendly street fairs is a great thing to have in town. Having said, if you’re going to do it, do it right! I have some event planning experience, that I would argue the people planning these events don’t have. Putting tables in chairs in the hot sun, on black top is silly! The entire lawn area in front of the school is shaded, should be full of table and chairs to sit down and eat that $6 cannoli! The kids area is a joke! And if you didn’t sell out the vending area, moving people in…all that empty space makes it look, well empty! And where is the band??? There should be dancing in the street bands playing all day! If Bar A and D’Jais can blast music all summer till 2AM, certainly a band could play during the day!
#17. Yes…the highlight of the festival should be music and dancing! A few years back, there was a ompah band marching up and down Main Street..Entertaining all ages.
#6 Bill Who is paying for the pole?
It wasn’t too bad of an inconvenience as it was only a couple of blocks long. The St. Patricks day parade on the other hand is a major pain, but it should remain in place.
It is a shame we have to place cement barricades at the end of events to keep car rammers away from people.
The last one was domestic, but anyone who is on the radar for terrorism should be deported as well as any ms-13 etc. gang members.
Lastly, anyone against the feast must just hate Italians ! Doesn’t it seem like everything has become about race and ethnicity now. Lets just be one dysfunctional american family.
why not have these events on Inlet Terrace – the streets there are wider and let the folks over there experience the inconveniences we do in town when main street is closed. I also know a couple of businesses that are not fond of these festivals as they don’t see much business.
Are the poles still electrified on Main st?
#19 We don’t have to pay for a pole. There’s one on 17th Avenue we can take down and use. That would make the whole town happy!!
Romanian pride! Electrified poles? How about kielbasa? First things first, so what if anyone gets shocked.
#21 We could put the Porto Johns in front of Matt and Jen’s homes and make sure they block the driveways!
#19. Since you asked… Buy-A -Pole contributions. Once the Borough collects enough for a pole then Colleen can spend it on unrelated needs. What else?
#17. Jillian, I assure you there will be dancing in the streets once the mayor leaves town.
