Over the bridge and into Belmar a Jersey Mike’s is the first thing you see. Very classy, so good for our image. Great job guys.

I guest it’s better than Manhattan bagel.
Plus the sign is crooked. Or at least appears so
Yeah, and I’m sure Bob from Mike’s Subs is real happy about that. Just goes to show how much of a sleaze Depeepee is. All he cares about is the almighty dollar and no one else.
Everybody get your subs from Bob. My fave is the #4 with everything.
the intersection @ 5th & Main will be redesigned when the Shark River bridge is replaced
I think it looks great.
Doesn’t Bob accept all Jersey Mike’s coupons so he doesn’t have to pay to print them. Also what’s Bob’s Charity exposure?
I don’t see anything wrong with this. The city line is located at 16th Ave. At the corner of Main St. and 16th Ave., there is a Gulf gas station and the Little Red Barn liquor store. How come no one complains about that?
Jersey Mike’s makes donations to charities by providing free food and drinks at their events.
Mike’s Giant Subs all the way!!!
#7 Your an ass. Bob is not affiliated with Jersey Mike’s and does not accept their coupons, he accepts his own. Bob is a local merchant with one store. Not a big corporation. As far as his charitable donations, I know for a fact he gives alot to the town and sponsors youth sport programs. What’s your charitable exposure?
#5 State acquisition?
Remember when a 20 year investment (usually with a storage facility or barren land) came to fruition when under/developed property was needed by the DOT?
#3 Isn’t this America? Can’t two sub shops operate in the same town? And why are developers being vilified? I think that building looks a lot better than what there before. As long as the builder builds within the guidelines of the town, why are people constantly bashing improvements?
My sense of laissez faire went out the window when they signed the redevelopment/PILOT agreement.
#6 Sign looks way below average
#3 get a grip you sound very jealous of Mr. Deppepe, Bob is a big boy he does not need you to look after him this is not his only competition you can get a sub from at least 10 other places in Belmar.
I heard Bob was offered to get in on the franchise and he said no. Jersey Mike’s has done well, and Bob is still in business. You guys aren’t Socialists are you? I thought I was the liberal here.
I like both places and will patronize both. That building doesn’t bother me either. I think it’s the nicest of all the newer development.
#13 – There really are many shops in town right now where one can get a very good sandwich. We really didn’t need another. I do hope this one will make better subs than the ‘stingy with meat’ ones that the Wall Jersey Mike’s makes. Puny little sandwiches there. Nobody beats Mike’s Subs.
#11 … Main St/RT71 would be moved west thru Ollie Klein’s parking lot and outdoor eatery on the corner … NJDOT has condemnation power.
I personally prefer a Sub sandwich business over another bar. No need for our Police to waste our taxpayers’ money throwing drunken bennies out the door. Less toilets flushing our precious water down the drain tolling our infrastructure.
The had a Quizno’s in that area too, not long ago. It’s gone now and Mike’s Subs is still there.
Aileen I concur with you again. There are 7 salons and at least as many pizza shops lining Main St. 3 (?) Chinese restaurants. Comfy’s right across from Acropolis. More then one bagel shop etc. That’s business. This is America right? Where entrepreneurs are to be celebrated. The building is very nice. As far as the pilot, thats s done deal. Hopefully going forward more consideration on school tax and such will be considered when making redevelopment contracts. But to demonize growing business and development makes no sense.
For the record, the first thing I see coming over the bridge from Avon, is Klein’s ! Aren’t they located on the North side of 5th Avenue at Main Street.
#23 … Klein’s owns 2 corners at Main St & River Ave
I pretty much don’t eat that food, but my wife gets the woman’s club sandwiches from
the place on 8th Ave. and says it’s a great place and she intends to keep getting the sandwiches from there. Also, I think the Jersey Mikes location isn’t any good. People don’t go down there for the most part except me to walk over the bridge.
The building is nice. Jersey Mikes can put a store wherever they want.
Does anyone know if the developer did anything about the giant black wall on the south side of the building? Now that is hideous. I haven’t been down that way in a while but nothing had been done about it. It looks unfinished. Just black tar with white streaks of the trim material from the rain. It’s a real F.U. to Acropolis.
#26 Jersey Mikes can not put a store whereever they want. You want them next to your house? That was an above average mistake on your part
#8 have you seen the condition of that gas station on 16th? It’s disgusting. Broken sign lying under large sign. Broken/abandoned cars next to homes. Across from BA why bother cleaning up?
Here’s a question that I think needs to be answered. Did the developer, 500 Main, get approval from the planning board to rent to a fast food restaurant? Because the Seaport Redevelopment Plan, states as a permitted use: “Restaurants & Brew Pubs, EXCLUDING FAST FOOD but allowing cocktail lounges & outdoor cafes”. A quick internet search on “fast food” confirms that Jersey Mike’s is considered a fast food restaurant. For example see,https://www.eatthis.com/biggest-fast-food-chains-america/ . If anyone has information on this please post. Otherwise, the issue should be brought before the Mayor, Council and/or Planning Board.
Can someone ask the Planning Board about this tomorrow night?
Great job Joe Friday. That’s an interesting find.
28 no worse than the ocean ave summer places that still have Pepsi umbrellas and tables out in late November. There is no code enforcement in Belmar anymore.Boardwalk businesses have illegal signs attached to our boardwalk.
Hey – I think I was wrong about my franchise story. I always heard that there were 2 guys who owned Mike’s Giant and one wanted to start the franchise….but the Jersey Mike’s sign says it started in the 50’s.
Anywho – if it’s a fast food restaurant, then so is the other Mikes (along with Corner Bagelry, Windmill, Hoagitos, Hooked, all pizza places, Playa Bowls – you get the picture). I don’t want to go down that road. Let’s just keep out the McDonalds, Burger Kings, etc.
Dunkin Donuts – we have 2
Grandfathered in I guess?
So why don’t you Joe Friday ask?
#27 I know you know that I meant within a commercial zone. I live in a residential zone. That was a below average attempt at being a baby.
I just want this expansion to stop. No good is going to come of it from all the unneeded (unneeded by the citizenry) building. It’s all just a bunch of characters, who don’t care about any town they build in, wanting to accumulate more illusionary wealth (the only real wealth is work done or a tangible product). Anything else is just a bunch of bankers extending their chokehold on the citizenry’s throats.
#36 You must be precise with your comments. Your attempt to make me look stupid is way below average
#33- Wow, really??? So how bout Pancheros Mexican grill???? Jersey Mikes has 1500 locations and Pancheros, 75. And I think Jersey Mikes service is probably one of the FASTEST out there. That’s the problem with this town. Selective enforcement. Different faces and parties, same old BS. I believe this could cause another lawsuit. Does anyone enforce anything in this town??
in addition to cold subs … Jersey Mike’s also sells hot subs … will the kitchen equipment exhaust thru the roof (3 stories up) or ground level?
29 – Ooopppp’s! Our Zoning Officer asleep at the wheel, AGAIN?
#38 Haha, ok I should’ve said “jersey mikes can put a store wherever they want- as long as it is in a commercially zoned area, on a planet that can sustain life, in this dimension, on our current plain of existence”
BTW, it wasn’t me that made you look stupid, if you catch my drift.
Regarding the gas station on 16th, I care more about the fact that when I pull up to get gas no one will come out to pump it. I have even laid on the horn numerous times. I hope the owner reads this blog. I try to buy local but I have given up.
#43 … the Gulf station attendants are busy working in the vape shop part of the business … the gas prices are good
Ha! Eat a Hoagitos Turkinator before we start calling it fast food.
#43 – Get out and pump your own gas. Then go in and pay them. What’s the big deal?
Pumping your own gas is illegal in the people’s republic of New Jersey and I don’t want to get hauled away by the petroleum police.
It’s insanity that there isn’t an option to self service at gas stations. You can have both full service for those that enjoy not having to get out in bad weather AND self service for those that don’t want to wait for the attendant to finish his phone call before he comes over and asks what you want. Please give us the option. I will never understand.
If they want to keep it only full service on state roads (parkway, turnpike), fine. But let the private stations do what they want.
I am trying to ascertain why this blog has become so contentious. I think Dave created this site to have a civil platform to express an opinion… there freedom of speech.
It has become very negative recently… folks calling people names, going on attacks, negative what truly are improvements in town.
I live on 5th Ave. and have for 25 years. Do I like the magnitude of the buildings recently constructed at 5th and Main …. no…I think its overwhelming and not conducive to the town an in particular to 5th Avenues personality.
The future of Belmar lies in the hands of the planning board. Not in the hands of those that elect to develop or for that matter open a business.
What prompted me to post this is the negativity associated with the new Jersey Mikes.
The franchisee didn’t build the build the building, rather took advantage of available “prime” retail space. Smart move!
Twenty five years ago for those of you that lived here will remember that intersection at 5th and Main had a used car lot with a dilapidated building where the current strolls is, a car repair shop where Kleins is on the corner, a carpet store where the old Strollos was and adjacent a vacated run down Havens and Hamptons.
What did that look like coming over the bridge from Avon ?
So people here find it offensive to see a Jersey Mikes as you come into town? It’s Ridiculous!
The 3 major inlets west to east coming into town are 5th which I touched on, 8th where you see 10th ave Burrito with a shoty exterior and dumpster alley not to mention an antiquated senior housing building. And on 10th a Family Dollar Store along with buildings that haven’t been upgraded and or maintained for years.
Yes we have 3 bagel stores and Chinese restaurants and god knows how many pizza joints but they all survive. Its capitalism!
Bob at Mikes Giant Subs will do just fine… he has a great product and a huge following.
Jersey Mikes adds a new dimension that I am sure will succeed. Ive been… and I can tell you the place is comfortable, clean, friendly and well designed. And it was packed! The owner has a special coupon that for the next few days offers a free regular sub with a 2$ donation that 100% goes to the Belmar Elementry School. He truly wants to be a part of the community.
If we want this town to proper, focus on what matters and not what doesn’t.
If we have issues with development tell the planning board… talk to our Mayor who is very interested about your issues and concerns.
This site is Common Sense for Belmar … we need to practice common sense and not make it a “Bitching Blog for Belmar”.
It’s perfectly fine to express your opinion good or bad, but… be realistic!
Cheers!
Sam is right. I certainly don’t always agree with him but he’s got a point. Everything he said is basically true.
We all do get a little whiny from time to time.
#33& #34 are all those establishments in the seaport redevelopment zone?
I don’t know what the problem with Jersey mikes is either, but if you don’t like a certain place simply don’t eat there. Get over yourselves.
