The Belmar SID has done good things for the town, and has more left to do. Why be against it when it has made the business district more attractive & has contributed to the overall health of our town? A voluntary Chamber of Commerce would place undue burdens on the members who elect to join, and all would benefit, IF the budget would only stay the same, which, of course, it would not. Those who also benefit from a more attractive town with events are homeowners, who may or may not choose to sell their homes. YOU benefitted; why not leave this part of your argument alone now that you are no longer part of the town?
I’m against it because it is not fair to the people who are being forced to pay for all that. If it really is to the benefit of the residents and homeowners then it should be part of the municipal budget. Commercial properties already pay more in taxes than they use in services, that’s why towns try to attract them. The municipality should just leave well enough alone and be thankful for the businesses that do come to Belmar. But since the owners of these properties are way underrepresented in the vote they are easy targets for additional taxation.
The SID should be voluntary. It is just an additional tax on business and property owners. It seems the downtown businesses are the only ones that count. The SID does not bother to communicate with members and has very little to show for the money collected in taxes. There is no accountability for the lack of performance. If the SID was such an asset, businesses would be happy to join. If the SID is such an asset all the tax payers should be paying into the pot.

the backside of Belmar Mall is an eyesore.
Do away with the entire eyesore parking lot.

If the SID were not forced by government decree on business owners it would disappear.
