One thing I can’t stand about this Mayor is that he refuses to recognize the difference in power between himself and some of the people who might criticize him or even attack him. If you go after the Mayor, no matter how small your voice is, you are fair game for mean and sometimes widely broadcasted attacks. At the meetings I’ve seen many instances of him ridiculing constituents who are obviously inexperienced at public speaking and are already very nervous. And the other week he launched an attack on a 17 year old that was published on his own Facebook and on the Belmar Democrats’ Facebook. The post included a picture of the kid. Hundreds of people read it and saw the picture.
Any other Mayor would show some grace and some patience if a high school kid called him a “loser”. Powerful people don’t need to respond to every attack. Doherty should have just ignored him, but instead used him as a weapon to hurl at Republicans.
A day or two later this was posted on Doherty’s page and on the Belmar Dems’ page:
Oh, how merciful! A 17 year old should not have been humiliated in front of hundreds of people BY A MAYOR for being “disrespectful”. This makes me very angry. If Doherty wants to attack me, or Ken Pringle or Jim Bean that’s fine. We all have the means to fight back if we choose to. A high school kid has no defense against a mayor.
I got an OPRAed copy of the letter the Mayor referred to but I have decided not to publish it. Obviously the kid is very pained and very scared. In it he states “…I made a mistake that I never thought could amount to me being put on social media like this. So I am asking to please remove that picture because it can destroy my career or future job opportunities…” Happy with yourself, Mayor?
Notably, he did also say “Someone offered me money or food to help them out.” Seems to be worded a little strangely but from what I understand the kid doesn’t want to talk any more about it and I can’t say that I blame him. So that’s what we know.
Even if he was given something, so what? That’s the big scandal the Mayor is ruining this kid’s life over?
And even if he was given “money or food” to advance a political agenda at least it was somebody’s own private money or food. It’s not like the money or food came from our taxes or from the donations we made to help flood victims.

Matt has no power to ruin this kids life. In a week or two, this will all be forgotten, if that long.
You and I know that but adolescents don’t understand how things pass. One reason why it’s such a difficult time in life.
Thank you Dave for this post. It is well documented that I stood next to this young man for the duration of the protest. I have taught hundreds of young adults his age. He is a great kid and I was impressed by his qualities and industry.
The only kids courted by mcdirty are the ones manipulated into illegal voting.
I wouldn’t put it past any of them to create a fake email account and send the email to Matt….
It was real.
Matt’s version was that he was paid. The kid’s version is not as strong that he was there specifically as a paid service. Matt is a jerk. I feel bad the kid was intimidated by Matt. I still feel that fund raisers in private homes do not negate 1st Amendment protests in public space when respectful and safe.
As long as Hillary gets away with her lies and deception,the rest of the Democrats follow along and as of now are getting away with it. As a former teacher, Claire how can your look at yourself in the mirror??? Shameful!!!
Dave. Do you have any evidence to provide the family if they decided to sue for defamation of character and harassing a minor?

Matt Doherty ridiculed Mike Seebeck when he took pics of campaign workers. I believe the chief of police even called Mr. Seebeck to investigate. I wonder if the chief knocked on Lawless Matt’s door and asked why he posted a pic of a juvenille on FB.

Let’s see if I can clarify “Crooked establishment” (He has to be referring to Matt here because he is crooked and the establishment) “caught setting up” (exercising 1st amendment rights is not a crime so no one was “caught” doing anything wrong) “real protestors” ( I guess me and Ted Ehmann are not real). Now if you want to take issue with me someone who can go toe to toe with you A) I will read what you retort here or B) you know where you can find me in person.
So, don’t expose the mayor’s kids to ridicule and protesters, but it is OK to harass and intimidate another “youngster”. Sounds hypocritical to me.
“Real” protester as compared to fictional or imaginary? The fellow was “real”. The protest was real, the sign was real.
Lawless Dirty Matt Doherty will never stop lying about everything that occurred or is about to happen. He is a dark soul that thrives on intimidating and abusing residents and now for him to do this to a child it’s shameful. Yes 17 is a teenager and just as important as his kids and should not have been put through Matt’s rage. Shut up Dirty Doherty we have had it with you in this town enough is enough. Keep your damn fundraisers with political pawns off your residence. I’m sure there are many establishment that you could mooch off to hold your publicity stunts. LOSER
Kudos Dave for not posting the email and for exposing the Mayor for his poor judgment handling this matter using his wife and kids as pawns to ridicule this young man. Well then Mayor, get out of politics if you can’t deal with it.

Do you know historically speaking, how many 17 year old young men have lost their lives in battles? For all those who have never met him or are blowing out your butts, said 17 year old knew what and why he was protesting. None of us wish the fallout the “bullying” of him that resulted. I worry about how it will deter his future responses to acting on political corruption. ( Matt’s intent )
