Merri Makers rented a snack bar, and claim ownership control ,over an entire public property.Wow is that fake news
BE IT RESOLVED, the Borough Clerk is hereby authorized and directed by the Mayor and
Council to advertise for bids to lease said Property upon the following terms and conditions:
North end of the 5th Avenue Pavilion having a total square footage of approximately 1,300
square feet.
http://www.belmar.com/content.php?viewfile=resolution&fid=349
“When we opened the Taylor Pavilion”. I wonder when Belmar residents will get upset about this. Will it be when they finally realize we have to pay for MerriMakers’s catering hall? Will it be when the 5th Ave boardwalk, beach and street is jammed with tipsy wedding guests, or will it be when the next hurricane causes damage we’ll have to fix? Or, will they keep calm, carry on and move to South Carolina?
Re Fake News – From the resolution: The property is leased in as is condition with the successful bidder responsible for fit out. A
pre-bid walk through of the property will be held on Friday, February 24, 2017 at 10:00am.
Didn’t MerriMakers win the lease 2 years ago? Why are they talking about being responsible for a “fit-out” when the kitchen has already been built and used many times?
It really is a joke how that space is being operated. The residents should get first priority and the pavilion should not be allowed to be subleased. i.e. Merry makers should not be allowed to rent the pavilion for $200 and then charge a couple $9,000 to have their wedding there. Additionally, nobody should be allowed to reserve the pavilion more than 1 time per year.
If someone wants to rent the pavilion they should only be able to do so through the borough. If they choose to use Merri Makers as their caterer so be it. Plain and simple.
The Taylor Pavillion is prominently featured on MerriMakers caterings Facebook page as well
Limits need to be put on how many times one person/group can rent out Taylor Pavilion in 1 year. Can’t trust the council! They are selling off Belmar one building at a time.
Ignorant me will speculate that there is a lease agreement between the borough and Merry Makers which would have rental terms therein. Maybe the council can now pass a resolution amending it and limiting the number of rentals…sure. A contract is a contract. The people of Belmar seem to be virtually powerless, and a solution is to educate the naive residents and vote out the creeps in charge. And find a way to rid us of that troublesome Borough Administrator, as well as, end party politics by changing the form of government in Belmar.
#8 Couldnt agree more!
#8 WATCHMAN “The people of Belmar seem to be virtually powerless” is not true.
They had a lot of power when they voted.
Power to enable those who enable them to thrive. Or survive in blissful ignorance. Information is power. Expose the truth.
#8. There exists a lease/rental agreement for the concession. What also seems to exist is an agreement that allows them to “pre-book” block a group of weekends in advance thereby making the hall space unavailable to the tax payers of Belmar who in fact pay for the building. Maybe legal but horribly done.
If they have a 2 year lease is the pavilion going to be put out to bid next year
The lease is for 10 years. Merri makers owns the pavilion until 2027
This is what I recall from the deal. My numbers may be off a bit, but not by much.
100 thousand per year for rent on a ten year lease.
100 thousand to fit out kitchen ( estimated guess here)
30 thousand for application fees and rent fees to the borough for 4 months (May June September October) of Saturday nights.
Let us not forget they have the Summer food consession in there to. The last renters in the old Taylor paid 30 thousand a summer.
So broken down yearly it roughly costs Merri makers 140 thousand a year to operate the catering hall on the boardwalk. 4 weddings at 35 a pop pays the rent
Pretty darn good deal considering WE paid 5 million for the building that is now locked up tight NOT open to the public as promised.
The Mayor and Council who approved this lease should be ashamed of themselves. How much money did they make on this deal?????
#15 …. the real curve ball to the other concession bidders was the required fit-out of kitchen equipment (unspecified) and surrender of the equipment to the Borough at the end of the lease.
It appears that MerriMakers made a minimal investment in kitchen equipment and delivers prepared food by truck.
Magovern Nicolay, unfair. WE paid 5 million for the building that is now locked up tight NOT open to the public as promised.
Eugene. I believe there was quite an investment in the kitchen fit out with the same stipulation as the other pavilion. There is a lot of refrigeration and venting alongwith other equipment. Their trucks can be going out to catering jobs too. Not nessesarily in. Another potential for income and profit. Even with the 100 grand estimate, broken down over 10 years of lease its still still a sweet deal. For them, not us.
Katrina you are as usual correct. We got a bum deal. The bums that were voted into office caused Belmar to be stuck with the Pavilion charade! Investigation should be deriguer.
We don’t need anymore boondoggle building scheme$ from the Mcdirty/Mcgovern Regimes. We in Belmar have been burned and you voters should have learned your lesson if you’ve followed the Anti-BELMAR Pavilion Merrimaker Catering Hall deal.
Do not allow “Colleen Brandywine” to sell Belmar property at Borough Hall down the Delaware River. No taxes is no deal.
#8 — It is easier said than done.
