Any kid that has ever built a sand castle too close to the water knows the reality of unsupported sand being a barrier to an incoming ocean wave.
He’s from Edison, what would he know about sand castles?
The Belmar and State government completely missed the boat when they upgraded the boat ramp and refinished the parking lot at the L street beach marina. The Rt 35 flooding could have been addressed then. They were asleep and irresponsible. Too focused on getting Matt’s buddy’s projects through.
The Almighty Mayor can ask God to lower the Ocean. If route 35 is raised, if that is even possible, the water will go somewhere else, like Avon. Maybe onto Inlet Terrace?
Blue acres buy outs dangling for an election cycle? The Dunes at MACLAERIE were cut down shortly before winter storm season…. grasses, shrubs and trees stop erosion, no?
Can’t the army surplus bulldozers drive down to the back bays? Just drive the red trucks loaded with sand, dump the sand and build dunes to protect rt 35 residents and transportation. In the spring, reverse. Don’t wait for geants, election speeches or deals.
#6, Sir, I think we should do what Bradley Beach did. Fence in old Christmas trees and allow sand dunes to naturally form and be anchored by the trees. It’s only been a couple of years since they started and you can see the beginnings of their dunes, built by wind driven sand.
I’m not an engineer but think some sort of temporary dune system that is easily erected and easily stored could be a good solution to flooding along route 35. DPW could set it up along all of route 35 and then take it down and store it after flood threat is gone.

Route 35 in that whole stretch around park and beach holds water and has to be closed often just from a heavy rain. Poor drainage in the first place. Not to mention high tides.
Please tell me the home by Summer Scam homes have not been effected by this flooding!
Why not build a sea wall? Is this not of concern to the state/county? Rt. 35 is not Belmar’s road if you pay attention to who does the plowing. So when our police officers and DPW crew are sent there, is the town reimbursed for their salaries?
#10 I’m sure there’s no need for worry the Keefe house is safe and sound over on K and 14th,The Mayor and Mike Campbell will see to that.even if the rest of the street is ignored,oh except maybe for Queen B Mrs D on the corner there. It’s funny how these poor people in this section of town are going through this turmoil and the needs of this part of the neighborhood are being ignored ,yet how funny it is that this is the same part of town Teresa Keefe and her new 3 story house had been rebuilt compliment’s of Belmar and Mr Mayor. She has been catered to for months and months ,I wonder what favor she did for the mayor to deserve such help and handout when the rest of the neighborhood goes untouched and falling apart.maybe some of her neighbor’s should ask her what her secret is.Lets see how her new house holds up when K street floods through 14th avenue. after all that is how her original house was supposedly destroyed first time around.So excuse me if I don’t give a damn about the Home By Summer Scam house and how it holds up through this storm and flooding.Who knows maybe if its affected again they will do another fund raiser for her and add a pool and wrap around deck this time.What I would like to see is some of the other true Belmar hard working good people in the community get the help they deserve instead of some freeloader who never cared about the town or its people until they were giving handouts.I would have loved to ride that train.
#10 It doesn’t matter if the Home By Summer scam houses were effected. If they were I am sure the mayor would have another campaign to build them another house. The problem is that everbody in Belmar is dumb enought to donate again.
All that needs to be done is to close the K Street entrance, install bulkhead taller than what exists now-run it behind the L Street Beach and across the K Street entrance. Reopen the entrance that used to be at the intersection of Route 71 and Highway 35 (where the traffic light is by the Windmill). It should be a lot cheaper and less inconvenient than trying to raise Highway 35. The intersection of 71 and 35 is less flood prone and would be safer.

Chris that make sense of course but in this town unless Matt gets something it’s not gonna happen.
Trust me, #15, 16 & 17-I’m not getting my hopes up, just expressing my personal opinion. I had well over $50,000.00 in damages after Sandy spent the evening at my house. Unfortunately, I didn’t have flood insurance. I certainly appreciate all of the kind folks who donated money to help the flood victims of Belmar. Again, unfortunately I didn’t meet the criteria to even receive a gift card. I know first hand that some gift card recipients were worse off than me, and some should not have even been on the list for the original intent of the donations.
Chris, my relatives house is on 14th right next to Home by Summer. They had flood insurance and still their home sits vacant and needs to be replaced for the Sandy damage was so extensive the house cannot be repaired. The flood insurance is a joke in that they want to pay pennies on the dollar for what the policy is supposedly worth. Not to mention new flood height criteria. So I understand your frustration. Your suggestion about L st bulk head is the most intelligent one I’ve heard yet. The retaining walls on the south side of 14th created a pool once the L st beach was breeched and will continue to do so in the future unless drastic measures are taken As for help after Sandy I guess my folks don’t count because they are not full time residents and though that was their intent upon retirement now with the debt of that white elephant next to HBS house they may never be able to retire, let alone move full time to Belmar
But hey! What’s more important, fixing flooding problems or building 6 million dollar club houses on the ocean in the V zone.
Not gonna happen. Maser would argue that additional bulk heading along the troubled area would cause flooding on Inlet Terr. Out of curiosity would like to see the difference in elevation (height above sea level) between the bulk heading at the mouth of the Inlet Terr. waterway and that near 14th. Ave in the River.
Just so people know,its been said The Keefe/Roberts house had no flood insurance,due to the fact it was denied because of the location of the home years ago. and house was in foreclosure for months and months and in dilapidated condition long before the storm.So what put them in the right criteria for assistance but not others.
#22, never heard of a dwelling being denied flood insurance. Location is the reason for flood insurance. There are people that just don’t bother to get flood insurance if there is no mortgage on that home. Not required unless one has a mortgage.
#23 You are correct!This is the story that was being given by the home owner when in actuality I do believe they just didn’t bother to carry it on the home.And in the case of this home there was a mortgage that was in severe default and unpaid for months.Non the less the point I was trying to make is that there were neighbors in the community who had all there ducks in row and were actually paying on their homes and taking care of their properties and were productive people in the community and they got no help,no hand outs,Where is the logic in that.I hope someone eventually exposes the whole corrupt situation.Seems very unfair to her neighbors next door and anyone else with in that neighborhood still struggling with the aftermath and new issues of flooding to come.At least Home By Summer scam house will not flood again being that it was raised when rebuilt.
