Let Houseman drive the rig at 83k a year. Make sure he has a valid driver’s license. He has a history of letting his licenses lapse. Oh, that’s right, Belmar has a history of paying for this guy to get licenses. Or is he still an un-licensed electrician? Hopefully the FBI trained him on CPR for 25k.
Ironic that we’ll have no first aid but 3 fire departments. Save money by combining all the FD’s, sell the extra land and assets, then fund the first aid.
Perhaps D’Jais can give a sizeable donation to keep it afloat. I’m sure they are one of the sponsors of bloody drunks getting carted away to the hospital free of charge.
Wondering if the BFAS applied and received PPP covid-19 monies. What’s the name of the billing company used by the 501c 3, and what % did they negotiate with that billing company?
If Lake Como is a true partner with Belmar on the shared service side, wouldn’t now be the perfect time to have them have the burden of full operations of the first aid? Or is this a one sided relationship?
#11- Great idea. Their taxes have been going down for the past two year, whereas, well as you know, ours is up double digits, thanks to us subsidizing their Police services. Surely they could raise their taxes to help us out and subsidize our first aid response.
Interesting situation shutting down the 1st. Aid. But I don’t think it’s that big a deal. The duties can easily be picked up by our volunteer firemen. Much of the “training” between the two already overlap. It could be made part of the job of the PD job as well. A policeman already shows up when a person is transported to the hospital.

There is a another group who can be used as well. It’s our young people. Certainly, some 16 yr. olds would be okay for such volunteer work (you couple a boy/girl with an adult if possible). I say some because a lot of them are already loused up people by the time they reach 16 yrs. of age but there are some who are okay for the job.

As far as the “training” goes, most of it is learning the gear. Once the person learns how to use the gear, they’re fine. When I had my situation and had to be hauled out, two women were able to handle me fine. But if they couldn’t bring the gear into play, it would have been a sticky wicket because they would have had to manhandle me to their gear. Luckily, I was able to make it to their gear. From there on it was a piece of cake.
——————————–
Lastly, if it comes to this, draft dpw guys for the job. When I worked in Mn. years ago, I was drafted into the fire brigade during the summer to possibly fight forest fires. No “training” needed, only an ability to use a shovel and ditch out for backfires. All of us were experienced at digging/many being ex-soldiers. If you didn’t report for duty if called it was supposed to be 30 days jail/fire duty and immediate termination from your job. We all “volunteered.” My section was never called. But one group on the job was called and spent two days fighting a fire.

Just so ideas from an experienced man.
It’s simple. The Belmar first aid has done an admirable job since their inception. But since they say they can’t sustain themselves financially any longer, it’s time to move on.
Other larger towns like Wall, Howell, etc have full time EMTs on duty. Belmar, being a seasonal one square mile town doesn’t need that coverage year round. In the summer yes. I say we contract with the paramedics, or neighboring towns and have some sort of regional, shared service medical response.
#14 obviously you are not a Belmar resident suggesting the year round residents do without a first aid squad in the off season and just hire a neighboring towns first aid for a bunch of weekend warriors? And yes everything is a simple fix with money if you have it and everyone is willing to spend it good luck with that one.
Totally agree with # 15. We need first aid services year-round….not only summertime. Unfortunately, medical emergencies occur all the time. As a long-time resident, I’m hopeful that town leaders come up with a plan to restore first-aid services sooner than later. Belmar’s first-aid volunteers will be sorely missed; their knowledge, caring and quick responses to medical emergencies were greatly appreciated .
15 and 16. I am a lifelong full time resident. You misinterpreted what I was saying. Of course we need a first aid in town. I said we don’t need a fully staffed 24/7 squad year round as the calls for service in the winter months go way down. Which according to their letter in financially unsustainable. Let the paramedics transport or regionalize service.
why cant Lake Como house and run the first aid? We will send them a check for the services we use, just like they send Belmar for Police. This is a partnership correct?
South Belmar/Lake Como, whatever you want to call it has been sucking the tests of the Belmar taxpayers for years. They use or have used our police, fire, first aid, school, court, dispatch, gas pumps, street department (sweeper), recreation Dept, court, code and fire inspection, etc, etc, etc.
They take everything from us but want to exclude the name “Belmar” from their name so as not to be identified as us. And yet they laugh behind our backs as our taxes go up astronomically as theirs go down.
Yes, let Lake Como fully fund the first aid. It’s the least they can do for a change.

Sad to hear. Thanks for the update Dave.
That’s sad news but unfortunately a sign of our times.
Wait, maybe Andrew Huisman can donate his salary to help bail them out!

How come they have a $250,000 mortgage after all these years? Equity line of credit?
#6 PPP is a temporary fix.
I smell a rat
I smell high density housing on the First Aid Squad property.

Time for a sit-down meeting between the boss of Belmar and the boss of Lake Como to work this out. Time for Lake Como to pay up!
Does Huisman know first aid? Maybe there’s another job he can pick up (for the right price).
