Total debacle. Thanks mayor !
What a joke. Waiting until 1.5 hours before the “close” of the NJ seafood festival to close entry to Belmar via Rt 35? Every access road to Belmar in or out was gridlocked. All pedestrian crosswalks were perilous. We didn’t allow the children to go to the store or beach. How about police making safety plans ahead of events and the chief law enforcement official recommendations for the management of the NJ Seafood Festival. Small town political stooge grandstanding yet again at the 11th hour. You got to give it to his media publicist, he got coverage. How much did this debacle cost Belmar residents? What’s that, it’s FREE?
Just like “a little bit pregnant” …. Belmar wasn’t “at capacity” …. Belmar was “OVER CAPACITY”!
Is there a website No Common Sense at Belmar??
I would love to see the justifications for the overspending pavilions, lack of record keeping, and running a food circus.
Clearly Belmar Tourism Dept is not aligned with the needs of the Belmar taxpayers.
The fireworks display on Friday night after the seafood festival was very nice. At the conclusion one of the Boro workers told me that the seafood festival and the fourth of July fireworks were being bundled to save money. When I told him that did not make sense he accused me of being against our Countries independence. I hope he was joking.
#5 you are right. The guests that were here this past weekend were not for the most part Belmar Taxpayers, however assuming the vendors are honest the sales tax goes to the state, which is why the Gov visits the shore towns to get them motivated to promote tourism, it does nothing for Belmar.
Let me see, what might the mayor claim? “See how successful the Seafood Festival was? All these people came to Belmar!” The spin at work.
The festival was so unsafe and not enjoyable at all. By the grace of God we did not have a major tragedy. Maybe we did, we will never find out. Too many people, so many town workers starting from Monday continuing at overtime through this week. We make no money, vendors pay $1,800 per kiosk except friends of Matt that pay who knows what. Absolute insanity, once again the mayor flies by the seat of his pants. Tourists were angry, waited on line for hours and then walked around holding cold seafood until they found someone’s property to sit on.
All news reports are on the positive side. The business people took in a ton of money. (Most of them do not live in Belmar)
The heck with safety issues and the people that reside here. How about an honest survey that asks the residents what they may want. Can’t remember anyone asking me my opinion if we might be overdoing this tourism thing.
What’s the over/under on Matt using this as an opportunity to say if Taylor Pavilion was there, First Aid would have had a staging area, vendors would have had a place to cool off, etc. etc. etc.
Bad planning. Unprofessional over all. These guys need a city planner to consult if they will keep hosting events like this.
#12 Why does that surprise you the whole town is run by amateurs No other town in NJ has the issues we have. We should be honored!
We had 46 first aid calls Sunday. The town was locked down we had a major issue as far as health and safety was concerned. The naysayers will say no but I say they would not believe unless they saw it. The surrounding towns did a great job sending their rigs and members to help. Who ever planned this event should be fired. A big mistake was made. We are moving backwards instead of forwards. But we get to pay for it whether we like it or not.
“Jaws” redeau. Keep them coming, July 4th weekend is around the corner. We shall again tempt fate.
Cash is king
#12, Sir, with all due respect, we should be careful of what we say – loose lips sink ships. Matt will interpret what you say to hire another useless character to put them on the town payroll.
minor issue but over the years if anyone has drove around Belmar, one would notice that the town eliminated what could be parking spots around the side streets….
Common Sense would tell you that the town needs to open up more spots along the side streets. Like why can’t you park along D Street between 15th and 16th
not saying that is answer but every bit helps…
Out of town parking lots are needed for any major Belmar event. Then bus them in and keep the streets clear
#17 – as to your question about D Street, parking is prohibited (and I’ve seen them tow a “few” cars) on the Eastern/Beach side. I live in the area, and understand the reason being that D street remains a two way street and if there was parking on both sides would be difficult to navigate.
I personally am up for keeping the one-way streets (13th and further south) remain one-way all year – and not just in the summer.
#16 – I knew you would say that and I agree. No common sense among those running the town, just greed and delusions of grandeur.
