The Belmar way

BELMAR — Despite objections from a resident, a resolution to allow for bids to run a Crossfit class on the Second Avenue beach was passed last week.
Theresa Sudnick, of Second Avenue, stood before the mayor and council to read aloud a letter that she said had been previously mailed to the borough.
Ms. Sudnick asked that the council “revisit the resolution,” and was in attendance at the meeting with a group of her neighbors, also of Second Avenue.
In her letter, Ms. Sudnick highlighted what she called existing problems that residents on her street face during the summer months, and went on to propose a few alternatives regarding the utilization of the beach for exercise classes.
“I’ve been a resident of Belmar for the past 30 years,” Ms. Sudnick said. “I chose to purchase a home in the north end of Belmar because it is a quiet residential neighborhood.”
Ms. Sudnick said that in the summer months, “the peace of the neighborhood has been disturbed” — not due to young, partying renters, but rather to exercise classes on the beach.
According to Ms. Sudnick, Zumba dance classes held on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, both in the evening and the early morning, as well drum circle gatherings on Wednesdays, have created an annoyance for residents on Second Avenue……………….
………………..Mayor Doherty thanked Ms. Sudnick for her input, but members of council did not comment on her suggestions during the meeting, and the resolution was passed unanimously.
Following the meeting, Mayor Doherty said the council listened to Ms. Sudnick’s concerns, but ultimately chose to move forward with the resolution.
“It’s something we’ve done in the past, and it seemed to work out well,” the mayor said. “I’m sure with just about any event we have in town, you can find someone that objects to it.
“In this case, she did voice her objection, it was heard,” Mayor Doherty added. “We listened to her objections, just like we listen to all of our residents, and chose to move forward with the resolution.”

Gee, I was surprised someone complained about the summer events maybe not her taste. I would think there would be more complaints at the lack of events in the winter though I have no suggestions at all except to continue to hibernate, watch the TV, and eat Doritos to gain my unneeded weight.
Ms Sudnick should of took her concern to the owners of D’Jais. Get them on her side and the Mayor and council would of fell into place. Ms Sudnick still thought the decision making power is held at town hall. Hopefully she learned a valuable lesson on Tuesday.
Seems odd that classes on the boardwalk would make noise at 7 am. Can see why the lady is upset.
However, the dearth of activities in the boardwalk area since the hurricane must be improved. Bring back the pavilions!
Activity is a sign of a healthy community. Everything can’t be held in the “South End”. I’m happy to see activity that doesn’t include alcohol at the beach. Good luck.
The neighbors aren’t objecting to the activity itself, they just want the volume turned down.
The town has a noise ordinance in place so call the cops. Last I heard noise is noise no matter where it originates.
If the boats/bridge don’t wake you the yoga class just might. (that was meant to be a joke).
I lost my hearing a long time ago………..
The Borough has a noise pollution ordinance …. with standards at residential property lines from stationary sources …. if Ms. Sudnick and her neighbors can prove a violation exists …. they should file a complaint with the Belmar Police.
Appalled, but not surprised. Unless the
recent posts are by members of the administration, the lack of resident -to-resident empathy has reached records lows in Belmar. I try to walk in other people’s shoes. Ms. Sudnick is now being shut down by the people and not just the administration. I moved to what I thought was a quiet street. Last year a neighbor rented out to college brats 12 in a two bedroom. I called the police Gene. Then they broke my car windows. I called the police. For God’s sake Ms. Sudnick and her neighbors need a summer that is free of calling the police every day and every week.
I have a deaf ear too, but I don’t brag about it to the press.
After living 18 years at the corner of 17th Ave and Ocean Ave …. I fully empathize with Ms. Sudnick and was not dismissing her hardship …. Sorry.
As an engineer, I was suggesting a technical approach because the noise ordinance is science based …. and a decibel meter (available @ Radio Shack) is necessary to prove a violation exists. Belmar Police should bring their decibel meter when responding to a noise call.
BTW- after age 18 …. everybody’s hearing sensitivity goes downhill.
