Its going to cost Lake Como more to get rid of the police than it would have cost to keep them. After paying them for all their vacation and sick time they accumulated and after The Borough of Lake Como has to pay 100% of each officers unemployment. Everyone on here should do their research. Go onto Google and type in “Gov.Whitman gives towns a pass on paying into the police pension”. It was towns like Lake Como who jumped on this for ten years not paying into the pension system. Not paying they were advised to put that money aside for when that back pay is called on. They didn’t and they just sat back and said look at us we aren’t raising taxes. Instead the just kept raiding the surplus. This whole situation was created the former mayor and councils and the Borough Administrator who should also lose her job.
Couldn’t be happier. We’ve been overpaying these glorified meter maids for YEARS! Kick them to the curb. Lake Como was literally throwing MILLIONS of dollars in the garbage each year. Now Belmar gets $900k a year just to patrol a couple extra blocks. This is a huge win for both towns.

Better get one after 6 months. Yes it is $2.4 million. Payroll plus payroll taxes ,insurance ,gas, cars, other related expenses. Now take two aspirins and get a good nights sleep

Old Man: Belmar can not afford to police them either with $900,000.00 It may seem like a lot but not when we have to hire at least 5 additional officers, buy more vehicles, more pensions, and overtime. Our current officers are going to want a pay increase because they are patrolling a bigger area. And because we now have a bigger department, it will mean there will be more higher ranks which means bigger salaries and then we will need to build them a bigger police station…

#21 – You’re looking at just the single line item for “salary” on the budget. Read a little further! There’s much more to the police department than “salary”. And let’s just get real for a second. Over $1.2 million for 10 salaries?? That’s an average of $120k a piece! For writing parking tickets?!? That’s an insult to the tax payers! Throw them all out!
Well, this Lake Como police situation should be helpful to us Belmar citizens. While we all recognize we should have a police dept., that dept. should be paid appropriately to the job. The job of policemen in Belmar bears little resemblance to that of a big city patrolman. This should be factored into all negotiations with our Dept. We have no use here for “detectives.” There should only be patrolmen and one chief. Rank would come with time on the job . A patrolmen with two years service would outrank a patrolmen with less time on the job. Of course, there would be small cost of living adjustments due to years of service. But the insane base pay and benefits we see now would be done away with. We should do this incrementally with new hires. Any man coming on the force from a certain date onwards would make a significantly reduced pay/benefit scale. This way, we can bring this under control before our financial situation gets completely out of control. There is no time to waste. Now is the time to start.
Joe, do your homework. The adding of steps to their salary guides and the freezing of raises and steps has been going on for years.
The police and other unions now pay for their medical. That along with 1.5% raises and paying 10% into their pension system is called negotiations. The issues with the pensions date back to Gov. Whitman and continue today as Governors fail to keep up with their promises. Don’t blame the workers’, blame the system created by those in power.
It’s all gone far beyond what you’re talking about. We need drastic changed downward on these salaries and benefits and we need change ASAP. Not over a long period of time. I presented a reasonable answer on my last post. Another alternative is reducing the package of the existing officers. I understand our force is looking at 4-5 new officers to take over the new physical limits of their patrol area. Well, those new officers should be hired on the new reduced package, I’d say maybe start at 35K plus reduced benefit package. That should give us some immediate help.

There are home developments in Monmouth county that are larger than Lake Como. 2.4 million to patrol a 1/4 mile is insane.
Vote them out. One by one, two by two in Nov.
