A Reader’s Dissent

In my inbox:

Hi Dave, the are pictures from TODAY of 3 homes under construction just in one neighborhood to post with the ridiculous letter from Claire about Sandy recovery.

The one house just completed repairs a couple weeks ago. It is still vacant, the people moved on since they went to foreclosure, losing their property since the storm. These four homes had 7 families in them at the time of the storm, empty today.

It is very easy to walk around and take a picture, it is another matter to actually know the facts.
One of the houses pictured is mine. We flooded during Sandy, evacuated. And with the help of friends and family, from Belmar and out of town, were able to recover, rebuild and return home. Like many in the area, we were fortunate enough to qualify for programs and are elevating our house. It has been a challenging process that we have been enduring for almost 4 years, and I am disappointed that someone would try to use that to their political advantage without actual knowledge of our situation.
We have always been more that wiling to share our recovery experience with anyone who asks. However, we would not permit anyone from either side of the political aisle to use our situation to help further their cause.
I would hope that you would remove these pictures and this post out of respect for the homeowners.

As you requested I took the photos down, but you should know that the person who sent them in is just a resident who suffered a big loss from Sandy and is not a political person.

It is interesting, however, that somebody who thinks that nobody from either political side should be using Sandy to further their their political cause has sat silent for the last three years while the mayor has grandstanded the issue ad nauseam and has now made it the basis of his campaign for higher office. In fact the email that you find so objectionable was in response to the Democratic party chairwoman politicizing the issue in her recent letter to the Press.

Missed my relatives house next to home by summer on 14th. Still vacant. Still fighting for insurance. No love from our Mayor.

There was nothing political about the pictures. The fact is there are still people working to restore their homes and there are still people displaced. Simply stating facts.

Perfect response Mr. Schneck. It’s ok for Matt to use so this person (commenter) is obviously standing on one side of the aisle.

They did leave their email with their name so I’m going to trust they own the house and if they don’t want a picture of their house up here I’ll live with that. If I only pulled one of the photos that would identify the commenter. Obviously I don’t have to take the pictures down but it’s not worth fighting over. Anyway, I think the point was made.

The text says it all Dave. At this point no visual aids are even necessary. The list of addresses will be published.

Where is the list of recipients of the Belmar grants that some people received after the storm that the Coast Star (I think that was the paper) requested? Why is the list secret? Seems I recall some discussion about pride and receiving charity.

Publish the unedited list! Too many of the “in-crowd” on it?
