This year Spring Lake had the highest percentage in the county. (Last year it was Belmar. I think the change to the messenger ballot law kept us from being number one again.)
Let’s drill down a little into Spring Lake’s numbers and see if there is any significant difference between the results at the polls and the mail in results.
Mayor Jennifer Naughton ran unopposed this year so there is nothing to be seen there. We’ll look at the council race where there were two Democrats and two Republicans competing for two open seats.
The total amounts of votes cast at the polls was 1912. The total mail in was 380
Democrat Janice Venables received 614 votes at the polls for 32.1% of the poll vote. Mail ins were 111 for 29.2% of that vote.
Democrat Robert Drasheff received 536 votes at the polls for 28.0% of the poll vote. Mail ins were 92 for 24.2%.
Republican John Fudge received 384 poll votes for 20.1%. Mail ins 82 for 21.6%.
Republican Edwin Hale received 378 poll votes for 19.8% . Mail ins 94 for 24.7%.
Hale seemed to do very well with the mail ins. Maybe we need to take a closer look at that guy.
Anyway let’s move on to Belmar, beginning with the council race. There were three candidates vying for one seat.
1433 votes were cast at the polls. There were 258 mail ins.
Democrat Jennifer Nicolay received 685 poll votes for 47.8%. Mail ins were 160 for 62%.
Republican Tom Burke got 461 poll votes for 32.2%. Mail ins 51 for 19.8%. Wow. Big difference. Tom should be mad.
The guy that should have won, independent David Schneck, won 285 poll votes for 19.9%. Mail ins were 46 for 17.8%.
And now the bond referendum.
It had 1443 votes at the polls and 248 mail ins.
“Yes” got 691 votes at the polls for 47.9%. Mail ins were 163 for 65.7%.
“No” got 752 votes at the polls for 52.1%. Mail ins 85 for 34.3%.

Is it true that aspirins are cheaper in India?
Dave thanks so much for your continued efforts to bring accurate info to the public. The sad fact here in Belmar is that we are a town divided. The pavilion bond question with a 17 count difference should at least make people realize that there is not ” overwhelming support” for our mayor and council nor are the rest of us some ” small element of obstructionist terrorists” Thank you again for your public service.
I don’t even think there’s majority support for our mayor and council. Or the bond.
Need to be educated. Are complete lists of absentee voters provided to all candidates? Are these lists released to anyone other than the candidates? How far in advance of an election are these lists available?
Anybody can ask Freehold to run a report at any time. Nothing is automatically sent to anyone though.
Are all the options checked or just the yes no question and just Nicolay and others not voted on if that’s the case it seems to me steering the respondent was the case. Someone mentioned most of the 710 residents don’t even know their is a missing Pavilion. This is shameful.
I’ll look into it.
Another follow-up question. In a past life I arranged for the Board of Elections to take write-in votes from nursing home residents for all primary and general elections in our community for 14 years. The BOE staff were not allowed to express anything to residents regarding candidates or issues being voted upon, only provide support to voters, i.e., read ballots to visually impaired, etc. What safe guards, if any, protect voters from undue influence or falsification of ballots?
I guess that would be a good question for Christine Hanlon. (I wonder if she’s a reader.)
What should happen is the individuals that helped the voters and messengers be subpoenaed to tell the Judge what they were told to do and how to do it and who told them to to do it and give them immunity from prosecution.
We don’t know that anything illegal happened but even if it did the county would do nothing about it.

How would you go about fighting to rid the 30 voters? How as a simple person go about doing it?
Actually Tulip, at the polls there were about 150 people who only voted on the Belmar stuff. I find it kind of odd that people vote in a council race but don’t care who, say, their assemblyman is. It’s certainly their right though and it’s no reason to invalidate their votes.
Dont you know there wasn’t enough time to complete anything on those VBM ballots but the Belmar votes.
By my calculation over 100 Belmar voters, who voted NO last year did not vote at all in this election. Why getting out the vote is important.
My opinion it doesn’t matter which way it went. The ballot question was tainted by the Grummer decision regarding percentage of grant funding to be used just days before the election and should be thrown out. The way the ordinance is written the debt is not off set by any grant funding. Residents were only given verbal/written assumptions by governing body. Then town meetings are rescheduled/cancelled. Definitely makes one wonder what the heck is going on. Ugh
