Are Senior Badges Free?

I know of seniors that requested their free badges but have been refused.  But the ordinance, as passed, seems unambiguous.

Does that mean all seniors or only Belmar residents?

I hope that is a mistake I don’t think we can afford to let seniors on for free, and any senior that did ask for their free badge should have been denied the ordinance says you get free beach access with proper credentials not a free badge.

So why do they sell senior badges at town hall. I did not know about the ordinance and bought two badges at town hall and they didn’t mentioned anything and just took my money

The senior badges, as well as those who would qualify as disabled, are free according to the ordinance. Seniors that paid for a badge should go to boro hall and request a refund. As of this post the Mayor, who is required by law to enforce all ordinances, is apparently not abiding by the ordinance.

My guess is the Mayor and Council passed this ordinance without reviewing it and now find themselves in an embarrassing situation. I have no doubt they will amend the ordinance to restore the $30 fee at some point, which will be further proof that Ordinance 2019-24 is valid at the present time. Until that time senior badges should be given badges for “no fee”.

The ordinance above is different than the one posted on belmar.com from June 18, 2019. Did they rubber stamp the wrong one? Because this one, yes, clearly states “no fees for beach badges shall be charged to the following persons”, including seniors 65+ and those that qualify for disability. The one posted online by the borough states no such thing.

Steve, beach tags (regular season and senior), are sold at borough hall in the off-season because the beach office does not open until summer starts. Anyone buying senior tags will be (should be) asked to show proof of age for the person using the badge. Once the beach office opens, tags are no longer sold at borough hall. At least, that’s how it’s been in the past. If you’re local, buy before the season and save yourself the headache of waiting in line once summer starts.
