What happened to the Barclay?
The place couldn’t survive just doing weddings and other functions and they wanted to be able to be open to the public as a bar and restaurant. They had an investor willing to renovate the building if they could be open regular hours. The town wouldn’t let them do it and the place ended up in bankruptcy.
They built 4 houses, 2 on the parking lot, 2 where the Barclay once stood.
Thanks for the clarification.
There were some other issues too. Let’s wait and see what happens.
I had heard while they were trying to get their ducks in order they gave a lot of “support” to matt’s campaign and the party after his first win…only hearsay though…
Yes, a few other ” lets make a deal” with Lawless Matt. Needless to say, Matt has many enemies. I call it “karma”. What you give, is what you get back. Someday. Only a few years in office and the bodies and victims are lining up. Could not happen to a “nicer” guy.
Doherty’s very first swearing-in as new mayor occurred at the Barclay, I would assume without the administration paying for use of the premises. That could be construed as a donation in kind, I think, if that is so. Who donated food and alcohol for the event? This guy started off with the ‘pay to play’ in effect. What could anyone expect? Except the Barclay people got screwed somehow, as it looks.
If you go to the search box, search on Barclay and look at the stuff that comes up from 2011 you can read about all the problems they had with that.
Admin, now sure if you’re aware or not. The Barclay was owned by the parents of Harry Harsson, who was a police officer in Belmar. Harrys brother Andrew is also a lifeguard in Belmar too along with Harrys daughter Paige. Gotta keep politics going by keeping it in the family..
As per #7’s comment, I say, “Line up now and get your legal recompense if you have a legitimate sue-able offence effected by the administration’s actions. The time is ripening.” Ride the wave, how appropriate, considering the Belmar logo.
I don’t see the need for a re developer getting involved in the ice house project. It is selling the property if the current owner does not want it anymore, demolishing the building and building what the tenant wants according to building codes. This is nothing more than adding unnecessary costs, but that’s what this bunch of sorry people are good at doing.
12 What are you even talking about?
# 10 You have your facts wrong. Know who and what your talking about before
You speak.
#13 There was a developer involved in the old ice house and then are trying to get a developer for a first transit village, then a seaport, both are ridiculous, and a waste of $$$$. Belmar is not New Brunswick where there is a development company that has completed and working on Billions of dollars of real estate.
How am I wrong? Oh I’m sorry, I meant to say (grand parents).. But his father ran it for them while the grand parents were in florida constantly.. What else am I wrong about?
he principal of capitalism is to provide a product or service that others need/want. The market will take care of itself, IF there is not undo interference in the market. Chef’s and Klien’s are afraid of the competition. Doherty as Mayor of the town has no business choosing sides. The truth will come out it always does. #SUPPORTSALT.
And I was concerned about noise and street throngs associated with the Beach Haus Brewery! So far that appears to be the tamest alcohol establishment in town. If they behave, I may even drop some coin there.
Now I been lookin’ for a job but it’s hard to find
Down here it’s just winners and losers and
Don’t get caught on the wrong side of that line
Well I’m tired of comin’ out on the losin’ end.
I walk the line
To Folsom Prison
Got the blues…
But I won’t back down
Call me Scofflaw Dirty Doherty
I’ll be back
14-I’m still waiting to see where I wasn’t correct with my information..
#21 Here is a hint.

Nicely put and a very nice remembrance.
#10 BelmarGuy – The Huismans sold the Barclay to the Vitas prior to the bankruptcy.
They went bankrupt too?
The Huismans sold the property. Then, the new owners, the Vitas, went before the board asking to give them an unrestricted liquor license. They were in financial straights and wanted to serve alcohol to the public, rather than booked events. Council voted no. Then they went bankrupt.
Yes, that is my understanding too. They also wanted to have the restaurant open to the public.
