So much for experience and dedication. Howard Roland wasnt Eric’s Idol.
I hear they are all just average…
This article is not really written correctly Gene Cory was never a Lifeguard supervisor – he collected Beach badge money and runs the gate guards. What happened to Kevin O’Donnell. He get canned too ? the three other names are not lifeguards. They are gate guards. Replacing veteran leadership with someone who’s obviously buddies with someone in town and has not worked on the beach in about 25-30 years – smart move. NOT. I am sure the returning lifeguards will be all so pleased NOT. To quote one of the other blog posters. “Game On… Good Luck this summer”
For the most part it’s all a bunch of baloney to me. It’s one group of charakters replacing another group of characters in soft touch “jobs.” The point here is that all part’ies come to an end (the one guy had been there fooling around for over fifty years) and the party will end the new gang someday as well.
I hope all the lifeguards go on strike! Then Connolly could really have something to complain about when…..ALL THE STANDS ARE DOWN!!!
The queen of mean Colleen has added another puppet Kerecman to her other 2 that are already in place those being Campbell & Huisman. These 3 puppets are not strangers to each other hence this was a political appointment. It must be fun having your strings pulled by the queen of mean because a lot of people are doing it. How do these 3 people (the puppets) wake up everyday knowing a conniving & mean spirited individual is controlling everything they do? Oh that’s right they’re all double dipping…..for the love of money….Game on….let the games begin…..have a nice Summer……good luck…..
Unbelievable, politics at it’s best. Let’s see, retired from Monmouth county prosecutors office. Big deal. Probably friends with Mike Campbell. Monmouth county resident. Big deal. Didn’t Magovern say he wants Belmar residents to work the beach. Passionate about water and safety of beachgoers. Big deal. Tell me what lifeguard isn’t? The wealth of talent that’s going to show him what to do was trained by the crew you let go. This guy was a lifeguard 30 years ago in Avon. He has no idea what goes on in Belmar. To bring someone in from the outside is a total slap in the face to all who have worked there and the supervisors who had 150 years experience in Belmar. This guy doesn’t even come close to meeting the requirements that the borough put in their help wanted ad.This is total BS. Doherty, your a wimp. Magovern, your a wimp. Connolly, I don’t know what you are.
Gene Corey was never a lifeguard and never a lifeguard supervisor. He probably never even had sand between his toes. Get it right.
Any Belmar Guard with an ounce of pride should go work somewhere else this summer because your obviously not good enough.
These people are not even average.
Isn’t Gene Corey Mark Walsifer’s cousin ?!!!
#4 since when is 50 years of experience saving lives in BELMAR, never once having lost a life while on duty, boil down to just “partying” and “fooling around?” show a little respect here. Are ya kiddin?
#12 – I call’em as I see’im…
Wow, a $150k job as a water safety instructor with the MCPO???? Would love to see that job description. Seems pretty dangerous to me. Does the gun get wet and still function? Is anyone aware of a Common Sense for Monmouth County blog? So that’s how they waste $450 million a year. But hey, your county tax is only going up .2% this year.
I can’t stand it anymore. Can’t leave can’t stay. Maybe I’ll just fade away.
This is truly a very sad day. The Belmar Lifeguard crew has been one of the best for many years. Now they are going to be replaced with very inexperienced political cronies! I sure hope the current Lifeguard Captains have secured jobs elsewhere. Belmar deserves to learn a lesson when they can’t man the beaches.
#11 Mark and Gene are not cousins. Guess again.
Do any of the new hires have the authority to issue a Belmar beach violation ticket? …. like soliciting, tents, prohibited bathing, contraband or roughhouse play…
#13– Have you applied? maybe you can take on the responsibility….
#13 Responsibility – There was a movie entitled, “15 Minutes” (2001) with Robert DeNiro who played a NYPD detective after a Russian pyromaniac. In the movie, the Russian said, “I love America, no one’s responsible for anything.” Sounds about write two me.
#20 Have another cocktail.
Tom Dilberger. Dilly Dilly.
#22 – Ah yes, I havn’t hurd that since my schoolyard daze, PS92, Brooklyn (yes, I’m an alumnus of the hallowed halls of PS92 – who would beeeve I was able to get into such’a prestigious institution), 1951 – brings back phond memory’s
Dilly Dilly Tom! Lol!
My husband DOUG was Belmar beach director from 1968-1976. At that time he oversaw every aspect of boardwalk and beach business including badge sellers and gate people, lifeguards and special police officers who walked the boards. He oversaw the bathrooms as well. He did a routine daily bank deposit. Doug spent all day, every day during the summer months at the beachfront-ensuring that the entire operation ran like a well-oiled machine. He left the job when he became a school administrator, and on to a 12 month school contract. My children were very young during those years when he was a beach employee, and they loved saying Hi to their Dad when we went to the beach, always on the lookout for the vehicle he drove. During those years, there was a summer season when it rained only one day, so visiting him at the beach was truly special. Doug drove a big bright green station wagon provided by the borough, loaded down with daily supplies, and drove many of the elderly beachfront employees to and from the beachfront. Gene Cory followed my husband as beach director, so I believe his duties were the same as Doug’s.
One of the young lifeguards at the time commented to a resident that Doug was a tough and demanding boss. I remember that because I thought that was a great observation. Doug knew the importance of the role of lifeguard; our lifeguards have always been amazing !
I agree with you Claire that Belmar lifeguards are amazing. But back in those days Howard Rowland was clearly the tough and demanding boss of the lifeguards. No one else.
Not minimizing Howard’s influence. He was “Belmar Beach” personified. But Doug did, indeed, did oversee the lifeguards. Howard came to our home early each summer along with his friend, Mr Kaufer, and reported to Doug the beach conditions for a particular day….temperature of water, rough or calm surf, and estimated times when conditions might change. They would also discuss the weather, and any possibility of rain. In brief, each summer day was discussed and planned for. My children were in high chairs at the time, and Howard and Mr Kaufer ( I think his name was Sid), had a cup of coffee during those days. This was at 7 am or earlier each summer morning .
Claire, first it’s nice to see you back on the blog. With all the political nonsense going on with the present lifeguard situation it’s a mute point to talk about what Howard, Sid and Doug talked about over coffee and krimpets 50 years ago. Take care and have a nice evening.
Perception is as bad as reality.
I think you mean moot point. Of course it’s moot. I was responding to comments as to responsibilities of the beach director . Please read comments posted previously on this particular site. Then someone mentioned Howard Rowland, and I was responding to that comment, as my name was mentioned. Coffee and krimpets ? Really? Your attempt at sarcasm? There is a difference between the words moot and mute.
Claire, go to bed. Everyone is not as perfect as you think you are. Good night.
Gene Corey is just another wimpy Democratic puppet.
#32- it’s the teacher in me. Always willing to help an individual who doesn’t know the difference between the words mute and moot. Love teaching vocabulary! Love that you linked my name with the word perfect..even if done disrespectfully. Deep down in your heart you know I’m perfect! ( if you don’t see the humor in this comment you’re also a moot point! )
32 – Half truth – always dictating.
Hey Claire, good to see you out of your cocoon. I’ve heard nothing but crickets from you concerning the horrific treatment of the Desanctis family by Doherty, Magovern and Connolly over their tree planting escapade. Or how about the corruption in the amended Harmon complaint? I’m sure you read it. Curious to your thoughts?
#36. Must be those damn crickets again!
Thought it was tsk, tsk!
Claire- Since you clearly have a very personal understanding of the rich tradition of our Belmar Guards, how is it that you have not come to their defense at the most recent town meetings? Don’t you think that this mayor and council have disrespected every tradition that makes Belmar so special??
I don’t know anything about this Kerecman guy or his qualifications. But I do know that this is the first time in Belmar beach history that a Belmar Guard is not in charge. I’m old and a traditionalist and disappointed.
Kerecman is just another puppet in the queen of mean Colleen’s collection. Let’s see if Campbell’s & Huisman’s minion can put up with her BS. I’m sure he’s kissed the ring already. But money is the root of all evil….
In a comment in an earlier post, someone pointed out that everything done in Belmar prior to Doherty’s being mayor, was crap. What can you expect from a self-serving, ambitious yuppie political climber who craves power, everyone else be damned? Like Magovern, he knows what is best for Belmar. Good riddance, Mr. Mayor, and do your damage somewhere else, preferably some place, like an unoccupied island. Hope the bureaucrat role bores you into oblivion.
#39-Have not been involved or in touch with town happenings. Have not attended recent council meeting. Was involved for quite a while with the care of an elderly relative who passed away about a month ago. That said, I usually attend 5th Ave. beach, and the guards there are fantastic! The tone of your commentary to me has a challenging tone. Your “gotcha” inquiry doesn’t hold water.
SCENARIO: Lights, Cameras, Action… all lifeguard stands up, manned, unmanned/unwomaned, waves, no waves, lightning, you name it.
Cooleen says: the TV cameras need Belmar Baywatch footage now and Im gonna give it to them my way regardless, I don’t give a damn about drownings! Get there assess back to 9th, now.
Claire I see how you conveniently ignored #36 comment/question. Your a nice lady I don’t blame you. I blame the dirty Doherty kool aid you drank years ago. I pray for a cure.
I’m very sorry for your loss, Claire. The guards on 5th ave are fantastic, as well as the people who trained them. If you’d like to see how they’ve been treated, Dave has footage of the last two council meetings here. I’m sure, as a long time resident, you will not be happy about it.
Thank you for your kind words, Betty. It was my mother in law who passed away. She was a dear person, and we miss her .
#45-What nasty commentary! Did you not understand my comment about a death in the family? I’m not up on the latest information about the Harmons. I do know their original suit was dismissed. As for the tree planting in honor of Joy…I don’t know why there was a holdup . My sympathies go out to her family. We were very involved over the last two years with my mother-in-law’s care. So it wasn’t ” convenient” for me to be involved/ informed about town issues. You are a heartless individual and a coward . Anonymous? Guess it’s not “convenient” for you to post with your real name. And give up the kool aid…it’s old and stupid.
Is the commentary on this BLOG a Blog statement or a NEWS RELEASE?
#48 – Yes…
I like a news release…as needed.
