BREAKING!

DOHERTY JOINS “THE ELEMENT”*

With his funding cut off by two unfavorable court rulings, the mayor seems to have suddenly found religion and done what the public wanted him to do all along. From the Patch story:

Mayor Matt Doherty said public input has caused the governing body to reconsider its plans for the two-story structure – one of a pair of pavilions included in a boardwalk redevelopment plan opposed by a trio of lawsuits.

While campaigning for his fellow Democratic Borough Council candidates in the days leading up to last week’s general election, Doherty said residents overwhelmingly supported the borough’s rebuilding efforts, but wanted a single-story building at 5th Avenue to replace the former Taylor Pavilion.

“This is a case of listening to the residents’ concerns,’’ Doherty said.

Pardon me while I scrape my brains off the ceiling……………………………

The story continues:

Asked what influence a trio of lawsuits filed by a citizens group had on the decision to remove the second story from the 5th avenue pavilion plans, Doherty was adamant.

“Zero,’’ he said. “Those lawsuits are going to continue on. But we’re moving ahead with our rebuilding efforts.’’

Pardon me while I scrape my brains off the ceiling again……………………………..

I’ve finished stuffing my brains back into my head and will now continue.

I guess the hundreds of Belmar residents who signed the petitions were not “public opinion”.  And I guess the dozens of us who spoke out against the plan were not “public opinion” either.  For our efforts we were repeatedly trashed as being part of some kind of “bad element” in town that was “against recovery”.  And then the week after the court ordered Doherty not to proceed with the project, he tells us that the court had nothing to do with it and the change of heart was due to public opinion?  Does he expect anybody to believe this?

Here are three questions:

1) Was there a meeting about this policy change?

2) Does Councilman Jim Bean even know that the “governing body” made this decision?

3) What constitutes Belmar’s “governing body”?

Here are the answers:

1) No

2) No

3) Matt Doherty

* BTW, Doherty is still not an official member of “The Element” because he hasn’t yet been through our secret initiation ritual.  I can’t go into detail but it involves walking around each other’s houses blindfolded.
