For Ideas To Matter

You Have To Believe In Them.

Chris Christie, as quoted in NorthJersey.com:

“I’m in this business to win,” Christie told Republican National Committee members in Boston, who were meeting Thursday……………..“For ideas to matter, we have to win, because if we don’t win, we don’t govern,” Christie said according to a Time magazine account cobbled together from interviews with guests and recordings. “And if we don’t govern, all we do is shout into the wind. So I am going to do anything I need to do to win!”

What good does it do to elect someone who won’t fight to actually enact those ideas?  Nobody I know of ever got elected as a “moderate” and then governed based on any sort of principle other than getting re-elected.  Even those who run on principle often disappoint once in office.  And indeed it is they that do the most harm.

Big government fails no matter who is running it.  But when it is overseen by someone who has been billed as a some sort of conservative free-market guy, its failures are then blamed on capitalism and conservatism.  (Think: George Bush.)
