Whether or not Mayor Doherty was being truthful when he told the Asbury Park Press that Taylor pavilion was paid for in part with the Buy a Board money or the insurance money, ultimately that money will be spent on the beach goers as Judge Katie Gummer has so ordered. It just may require some sort of injunction with, of course, the accompanying legal expenses.
The FEMA millions will also, ultimately, mostly go to the beach goers. Despite the fact that there is some sort of appeal going on, the Borough’s case for using the money for Taylor is weaker than ever. I have published the Taylor booking calendar for 2017 and 2018. We now know what the Taylor pavilion is being used for. Not a single event has anything to do with anything involving a beach goer. In fact even the restaurant section of Taylor, which there was some case for allowing to beach to pay for, can be challenged further if the kitchen is used for catered weddings in the other part of the building. It’s not even a restaurant anyway. The space is all kitchen.
So the beach utility is eventually going to be coming into a couple of million dollars and I think that most or all of it should go towards paying down the beach utility bond. But if we do want to skim off some of the money and spend it to improve the experience of going to the beach here I have two suggestions.
One would be to install Mobi-Mats running from each entrance to the lifeguard stand and a north-south mat connecting them. Something like this….
….except of course a little further back from the water and the people would be wearing bathing suits. This would make it so much easier for folks to drag chairs, umbrellas, coolers and babies in strollers to where they want to sit. It would be especially helpful for families and for older people. Particularly on very hot days. And particularly in the north end where the beach is so wide. It would also be great for handicapped people and their caretakers.
My other suggestion is to construct every three or four blocks along the boardwalk a sun/rain shelter similar to the one at the end of Avon’s boardwalk.
It would be a great way for beach goers and boardwalk users to get out of the hot sun for a while. And we wouldn’t need to use Taylor pavilion to escape a sudden rain as we were told we could do.

I think the area across from djais parking lot would be a great place for a sun shelter & the area across from 2nd ave beach.There used to be a pavilion at 18th ave in the 90’s. I dont like the idea of a north south mat seams very expensive and would not be used much.
Why are there no tables on our decks at 5th and 10th? buy a board money use.

If I wanted to buy a table for the public to sit on for the 5th avenue pavilion I would have donated money after Sandy instead of the Buy A Board campaign. Never believe their campaign pledges again!
I’d be happy with just getting mats on every street. We had one on 14th but they removed it. No exsplaination given.
On the Taylor subject. The old building was open and welcoming to the public. Nice views from front , open windows with ocean breezes and With those lovely rockers. Now it’s an uninviting space closed up so no on except those deemed worthy by the powers that be (an unelected Colleen Connelly). The whole thing was a con job from the beginning. Matt Doherty sold off our town, piece by piece under the guise of “recovery”.
All of you YES voters, you got taken or you were complicit in the sell job. The saddest part is that it’s going to cost all of us, in dollars and quality of life.
Excellent ideas. The sun shelters would be used a lot. Some shaded spots to enjoy the view would be great.

Dave, I remember when Bill Young was BA, there was a plan to install 2 of these shaded areas on the beach. One was at 17th Ave, and the residents suggested it be shifted a block or two since there was already a lot going on between 16th and 17th. Young told the residents the “shade structures” were already purchased. Where do we think they went??
One of them was at Maclearie Park. Not sure if it’s still there.

Mats can extend 150 to 200 ft. down the beach and also have T – shaped off-shoots.
Can anyone explain why the public safety building isn’t being used ?
Mats on the dry sand ocean beach should be kept distant from environmental sensitive areas …. like the natural north end beach.
the south end beach is a better candidate for mats because it is dredge material.

#20 Young folk who sunbathe by day and head out to the bars at night is pretty much what it says! No sign of catering to families. Such a shame. And as far as I am concerned, the Marina has been all but destroyed. And don’t get me started on Taylor pavilion!
