Well I was going to announce this at tomorrow’s council meeting, but now that the county has mailed registered letters out to everyone who signed my council nomination petition stating that I removed myself from the race, I have to write about it.
Last spring when it seemed that the Republicans weren’t going to put forward a candidate to run against Jennifer Nicolay this fall, I thought it would be fun to run against her as an independent. It wasn’t that I have anything against Jennifer, actually she’s my neighbor and a very nice lady. I just thought it would be an opportunity to express some ideas that aren’t generally heard as part of the usual political discourse, and, like I said, it would have been a lot of fun. Even though I couldn’t afford to spend any money campaigning this year, I thought if it were just she and I in the race I could collect a decent amount of attention (and votes) anyway. And I was told that several Republicans were planning to write in my name in the June Republican primary in order to try to draft me to run as a Republican, something at the time I would have been willing to do and stated so.
Well, as you all know, other Republicans who I guess aren’t fans of my philosophy of freedom and limited government found, at the very last minute, a “moderate” Republican to enter the race. They have control of the Republican email list and urged all the Republicans to write in his name so he ended up getting a lot more write-ins than I did.
I don’t really see much difference in the political philosophies of these kind of Republicans and the Democrats they wish to replace, so I’m sure the race will be about personalities and not about how much government we should be saddled with. The problem is that with both sides spending many thousands of dollars, and me spending nothing, I would be completely marginalized. I made the decision to leave the race.
Nobody at the election office in Freehold said anything about everyone getting registered letters. This is a big embarrassment to me. I’m so sorry to all those people who got notices in their mailboxes and now have to go to the post office and sign for this stupid letter. If I had known they were going to do this I wouldn’t have pulled out.
I should not have left the race. I let down the supporters I do have, and inconvenienced dozens of petition signers. I’m sorry.
