He wouldn’t be able to hide his inability to run such an organization. Did you see the qualifications of the current Director.

The background check is why he didn’t get the job. It was a 4 point check – very comprehensive. I’m sure the lawsuits and his general behavior (like allowing a helicopter to land in town) is what did it.

Let’s be serious. It didn’t take Doherty three weeks from the time he started telling people he was getting the head job at the MVC to decide it “isn’t a good fit.” But that is about how long it takes for the NJ State Police Government Integrity Unit to conduct a background investigation, commonly known as a “four-way,” for a high level position that requires Senate confirmation. According to the NJSP website, “these investigations focus on positions in which honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness are essential to the candidates’ ability to discharge professional responsibilities.” You can draw your own conclusion as to whether it was the Governor or Doherty who decided he wasn’t “a good fit” for that kind of position.

Here’s a second reason why Doherty’s story is nonsense. Governors do not offer positions that require State Police four-way investigations unless the candidate has already agreed he or she would take the job.

But don’t lose heart. Doherty needs an excuse — any plausible one — to get out of Belmar before his record catches up with him. My bet is it will be a position far from the Trenton spotlight.

Ken, one would think that there was some sort of email correspondence between Matt Doherty and state officials regarding this appointment. Whether it be the Governor’s office, state police or someone else. In it’s infancy the investigation had to begin with an email somewhere. Can you recommend who to OPRA regarding this ?

He ran unsuccessfully on the Democratic ticket for the 11th District in 2005 and Monmouth County freeholder in 2016. The Democratic Party has better candidates and this guy hit his ceiling in Belmar.

C’mon everybody. Let’s be a little sympathetic here. Of course the guy shouldn’t have gotten the “job,” but I’m sure another dolt just as bad will get it.
We’re distraught he didn’t get the job but imagine how Matt feels. Let’s all show a little compassion for Matt’s hurt feelings.

Absolutely no way Tom #14. Did Doherty show compassion when Joy Desanctis’ family wanted to plant a tree ?! Compassion goes out the window when it comes to Doherty.

Matt Doherty and his performance of late in Belmar was brought on by himself for this ‘alleged’ pass for the DMV gig. I do not want to wish any hardship to both he and his family. His runway continues to get shorter and shorter for an ‘outside’ governmental appointment and as based on historic legal decisions in Freehold, NJ Court and those that are still pending here in Belmar. Sad.
