These two events make the parking issue worth the hassle. They represent the best in all of us.

Shameful to complain about such good events. Why not praise and be proud that our town hosts them? Parking wont be worse than a sunny summer weekend day. Always negative. Are ya kiddin?

#2 – walk or ride you bike and see what they do for the kids at this event. If you complain about anything after then you don’t understand compassion. It’s a great event for families near and far. And let them have your beach parking spot for the day. Many will have handicap plates legitimately vs so many others in this state.

I am appalled you people think this is an okay situation. Do you understand the population of people coming to Surfer’s Healing? These children are all special needs. Parents and siblings will be struggling immensely to keep their young children, tweens, teens and young adults, from darting through the streets and in between cars, corralling as best they could in order to direct them to the beach. Families like ours, who will be there that day, understand this fully and will be extra vigilant. But a few thousand extraneous people, crowding to another event a few blocks away, will not. This event is the same exact weekend every single year. We parents look so forward to this, and now to worry further about our parking prospects is simply unconscionable. Must be so easy for you all who never had to worry about this. Good for you. I wish I never did. But to see my disabled son on a surfboard is worth almost anything. But certainly not worth compromising his safety. Please everyone come and support our specials needs community at the Borough Council meeting tomorrow evening. Voice your concern for our children and their safety. Or else sit on the sidelines and bash parents like me for speaking out. You should be ashamed!

OMG, the town just pitted the Catholic church against special needs kid’s parents.

Why do they put people in this position? Whatever side you take will anger the other.

    Awful.

There is still time to fix this. I would suggest moving the newer of the town events to the other end of Belmar, around 18th Ave. The town can put out chairs, and a podium, make it nice. DJais can be asked to let them use the parking for the morning.

    Figure it out town leaders.

First the Mass starts an hour after the surfing event and one would would think that most participants will be on the beach well before 10am mass time. This will also give the parents with children first shot at public/beach parking. St Rose does have its own parking both at the high school and grade school and can shuttle people to the mass.I would also think that a majority will either walk or ride a bike to the mass.I understand it might be packed up at the beach for an hour /hour and half but the mass is not an all day event. So relax people its not like it bus loads of people going to booze it up at DJais all day.

The same parishioners, who often VOLUNTEER for Colton & friends, will be volunteering again this year so extra parking will be available. By osmosis they will be doing God’s work with the children and listening to the Bishop”s Homily. Belmar can handle these fine groups of people.

Tracy Bean is correct, what a disgrace some if you are. If you knew anything about surfers healing you would understand that because there are different time slots all day long and that many of those with special needs cannot simply “wait” their turn, these families will be coming and going all day. Many do not arrive first thing. There are so many vendors and activities as well that’s provided to help the children that already participated. And to suggest parents should just”relax” is extremely patronizing. And if you wanted to do God’s work you would move the event which would help these families more. Let the volunteers park farther away and cut these families a break. What kind of people are you?

Having the second event on Silver Lake Park near the Gazebo will indeed take parking away. Parking has happened on the grass around the Gazebo for years so that those with special needs and disabilities have much easier time getting to the event. Crossing Guards are available to safely cross them. Even with that that is still not enough parking and many use the streets. Adding another event in close proximity makes it all that more difficult for them to SAFELY get to the beach. 5000 to 7000 Beach Bash attendees plus 1000 to 2000 attending the second event is not a great idea. Please ask them to reschedule the second event – either Belmar or those having the event on behalf of these special individuals and their families

Church should be in church or outside property that’s owned by the church. I don’t complain about it when they do these things but if it causes problems for Surfer’s Healing then absolutely, no question – Surfer’s Healing trumps the Mass on public land.

#13 does Surfers Healing rent/permit/book the Gazebo or Pavilion or just “assume” it comes with the beach? Are businesses on Ocean shut down so nothing else occurs in the town on same date? Is the town rented for this event? Work together and work it out. Everybody get along and help each other. Two wonderful events that can promote the best of our Community and not events that end up in the police blotter. I’d be happy to valet for free before/after the Mass if needed

Why an outdoor mass? Why not have the bishop perform in the church? Is it because too many people will go to this particular mass? If so, why? Why would more people attend this particular mass than any other mass held at the church? Is God more present if it’s conducted by a bishop rather than a priest? The answer is no. Have the mass in the church. If you want to see this mass but you don’t regularly go to church…well maybe pray on that.
If the crowds are because there are multiple parishes involved, then the bishop can do multiple engagements at different churches. After all, what’s more important than taking care of your parishioners?

These things are scheduled! Moving one would be the only option at this point, and that is unlikely to happen. I agree with “Relax”, most of the families will already be on the beach by then. The bishop is not rescheduling, and news report say 1,000 people came last year…that was an inflated number for sure. Belmar can handle large crowds at the beach front! I think this will end up okay in the end! And, Tracey, I feel for you, and any family with special needs children, but don’t shame people for their opinions because they too haven’t experienced what you have, and their opinion is different then yours.

Have the bishop perform the mass at the gazebo, streamed live to a big screen in the air conditioned church for parishioners to observe. The collection plate(s) can be passed there, no fear of the wind blowing the dollar bills into the lake.

#27 You’re right. Move the mass to a church. It IS a big deal to have both events in essentially the same place.

#25 2016. There won’t be a 2020 for the liar in chief. Besides, his administration (tax payers) still hasn’t paid the bills for the 2016 one.
I wonder if Bishop O’Connell was one of the catholic bishops that signed a letter condemning Trump for his screed about the entire city of Baltimore. Or perhaps he was one of the catholic Bishops that penned a letter to the president condemning his family separation policy at the (southern) border. Or it could be that he’s lending his support to his fellow religious leaders of the National Cathedral as they recently penned an open letter blasting those of us that stay silent in the face of the president’s racist comments (It’s a good read, I recommend it for any one who goes to church regularly). Anyway, maybe we’ll find out on the 8th.
