Reader Reports Drone Danger

In yesterday’s inbox:

Dave,

I’m a faithful reader of your blog, but have never posted. And I’d like to keep my real name out of it, but I’m a long time Xth Ave resident.

I’m at the beach this morning and saw a drone hovering over the ocean, slowly coming in towards the beach with its camera aimed toward the beachgoers. I then saw the drone hover over the beach, illegally I may add of FAA rules and regulations, and then fly over to the inlet, where it hovered over the water. A few minutes later it was back over the ocean, over the beach itself, and then it came in for a landing on the beach.

Let me repeat that last part of the sentence because it’s rather important. The drone came in for a landing on the beach. Right next to dozens and dozens of beachgoers. In clear violation of FAA rules.

I do not know who the pilot was, I did not recognize him, but I can say it wasn’t our mayor.

I was infuriated. What if a seagull flew into the drone and caused it to fall on beachgoers? What if the electronics failed and the drone just fell onto the beach? Think of the possible injuries this could have caused.

Just thought this may be a interesting post for the blog.

Agreed.
