Question: If these folks love Belmar so much why do they think the whole town needs to be redeveloped?

Isn’t this proof that the SID or BBP isn’t working?? I thought the town was roaring back. I love the fact that the Belmar citizens keep voting to throw money to all of Doherty’s (Maggie’s) friends without ever seeing results.

To be fair, they didn’t on the bond referendum, which involved a few of Maggie’s friends.

Nice boiler plate report. What does the report have to do with Main Street improvement?

Pocket parks and more benches about town are a great idea. Lots of people need to stop and sit occasionally when out walking.

Overall though, worry that the redevelopment plan is a bit Machiavellian. And thoughts linger about who will profit off the new plan.

If the belief is build it and they will come is very unlikely it will be successful. For a major project like to have any chance of being successful you need solid signed leases by major retail or corporations that will help promote the traffic. By putting up nice buildings and thinking it will be successful is delusional. In this economy things are extremely competitive, and you have to have a very compelling reason for people to come on down. I don’t want to be a naysayer I am realistic.

I wanted to add, look at the vacancies on Main St. Look at the hours on some of the stores. You cant ignore the reason for that, and just can’t think a redevelopment is the answer!

The worst eyesore in Belmar is the Borough owned property between the railroad and the rear of Belmar Mall …. dumpsters, mutant lemons, junk, food containers, cardboard, pallets and smokehouse (enforce the new smoke ordinance!) ….
A potential remedy would be a couple of pass-thru businesses with storefronts on both sides of the building ….

I agree Gene. Out of all of the shore towns, Belmar’s DPW yard is by far the ugliest. Dempsy Park gets treated like a storage facility instead of the recreational space it was intended to be.
