Good job showing the differences. I’ve been going to Mike’s since I was in high school in 1978.
haha I love it! Thanks for this data. And since the taste is virtually identical — Mike’s Giant it is! But all this stuff is really bad for us:) We really need a little soup and salad shop!
Competition is good for us. Keeps the quality in check. If the market can’t handle two time will tell.

Every pizza joint(I think there are 11 or twelve) sell subs.
Every deli and two of the three bagel shops sell subs.
Why are people picking on Jersey Mikes?
Im a fan of Mikes Giant Subs… he’ll do just fine… he has a great product and a great staff.
Jersey Mikes has been open for like 4 days and too does a nice job.
Really this site has diminished to taking side by pictures of local businesses product for comparative purposes??? …. using a tape measure…REALLY???

Give the new guy a break and keep your reviews of local businesses to Yelp and Trip Adviser.
That is unless were start comparing bagel sizes, pizza sizes, pancakes sizes etc… etc… etc.

Hey Sammy boy you’re taking this Jersey Mike’s thing way to seriously. According to Wikipedia ” The Jersey Mike’s franchise has almost 1,504 locations open and about 124 more in development across the United States, in addition to three locations in Queensland, Australia and two in Ontario, Canada.” I’m sure CEO Peter Cancro is used to being picked on by the competition and a little side by side comparison (especially in Belmar)is not going to harm his business. Your point about pizza joints, delis and bagel shops selling subs is well taken. Why did we need another sub shop in town?
And we’re supposed to “give the new guy a break”? Give me a break! How about directing some of your outrage to the developer/landlord and town officials that let a prime commercial spot in town be filled by a fast food franchise in violation of the zoning requirements of Seaport Redevelopment Plan. Let’s see what the Mayor and Council does about that, if anything.

Mr Addams- you need to lighten up. It’s like the porkroll taylor ham debate. Yes it’s pointless and silly, but it’s fun. Jersey Mike’s will be fine and yes, part of what this blog is for includes silly debates like this one.
#6 discussing unimportant issues like which sandwich is better – and discussing important issues like the fiscal malfeasance that the town is trying to sort through – are not mutually exclusive.
Mr. Lighten up… with respect i have to differ… the taylor ham pork roll debate is fun…. there’s nothing fun about bashing a new business that makes an investment in town. It will discourage others to do the same. Maybe that’s why there are so many vacant stores on Main St. I’ve said it twice now …can we all just get along ?
Ok I hear ya. People have opinions though. And after reading all the comments- I don’t see anything overtly ‘negative’. Just people expressing opinions. With a couple even suggesting having some other establishments come in to town. Seems pretty harmless to me. Besides, opinions expressed on this blog will not be the downfall of Jersey Mikes or Mikes Giant. If this blog had that kind of power DJais, Bar A, Boat House, Flames, Anchor, 10thAve Burrito, 9th Ave. Pier, and Marina Grill would have all closed down a long time ago. Market forces will determine who succeeds and who fails. Out of curiosity though, I don’t recall you chiming in when other establishments are being discussed and derided-is there a reason you seem more interested in Jersey Mikes? If you came to the defense of other establishments and I missed it- disregard the question. In any event, I agree with you about civility but this string of posts seems pretty tame compared to some other topics discussed over the years.
#14 – Nice post! My objection was the extreme they went to in the original post. I have no ties to Jersey Mikes and in fact have supported Bob at Mike’s Giant Subs for the past 25 years. I just felt it unfair to post that about a new business that’s been in town for 4 days especially since more are leaving than coming. Example… First Marine gone. Tapas gone. Sunsations gone , Jacks leaving. The Bank left and has been vacant for how many years? Drive down Main street and see the vacancies.A successful town needs a successful Main Street. As far as me not posting about the other businesses you listed … personally I have no problem…. we are a summmer resort community … bars and restaurants are a big part of being one. And, if I wanted to do a review I would do yelp or travel adviser not a blog which is designed to talk about common sense issues for the town not food comparisons.Be well!
a primary goal of the Seaport Redevelopment Plan is to promote a “sense of place” unique to Belmar … with 1500+ other franchises … this place doesn’t cut the mustard.

I found nowhere in the seafood redevelopment plan any mention of franchises being excluded.
I did see “fast food” … see Websters def of what fast food is defined as most of Main Street is exactly that.
Sam Adams….thank you for your patience as you continue to be a voice of reason, not sure you’ll change any of the minds on here that your up against but your not alone in your opinion and feelings. And I’ve been following this ridiculous topic of Jersey Mike’s since it appeared on the blog. I can’t believe how much controversy can be made over a sub shop….but your point should be well taken by everyone….Jersey Mike’s, May be a franchise but someone still expended money to start a business in belmar, I don’t know their terms but starting any business is difficult and a financial risk. When people google belmar this blog comes up. Do you think an investor or someone looking to put their life’s savings into starting a business or anything is going to come to belmar after reading some of theses posts? Would you? If your mad at the prior administration and their mistakes, you shouldn’t direct it at people that had no part of it. The past admin was elected in, just like this one. No wonder belmar Main Street looks like it does, half vacant. I haven’t heard of a positive thing half the people complaining on the blog bring to the borough they sit at their computers and bash the people that are at least trying. It’s sad. Get over yourselves people support your community.

Thank you for the response but you didn’t really answer my question. You are offering a full throated defense of Jersey Mikes but you never offered a full throated defense of any other establishment. I was just curious as to why. You’ve explained why you are defending Jersey Mikes but you never explained why you haven’t defended other targets on this blog with the same vigor. For instance- there was a recent dust up about Flames. A lot of people were bashing it and a few came to their defense. There was no post from you filled with indignant anger shaming us all for daring to express an opinion about a Belmar establishment. They’re a new business. They’ve invested a lot of money. Why not lecture us about that one? Perhaps you just decided enough is enough when the blog started picking on Jersey Mikes?
BTW, not one of the businesses that you listed left, or are leaving, because of this blog. Not one. Like I said- it’s just a forum to say things. When we need to get serious and organize, we do. When we want to express opinions either positive or negative, we can. I’m sorry if it offends you. The good news is that you have a place to express your dismay…right here.
