Doherty’s deceptive spin affects every Belmar resident long term! His follower, Brennan, is just as culpable, even more so because he was so blindly lead despite the headlights shone upon one misdeed after another. The party loyalty excuse is nothing more than a self serving excuse. Send your tax increase to the DNC and ask them to pay it out of their war chests.

The Democrats who were cleanly swept from office will have their taxes go up as well. The residents who voted for them must be educated about why the increase is necessary, as many are probably not aware about the misdeeds perpetrated against the borough. Out of ignorance or plain blind party loyalty, they will just blame the Republicans.

Say what you want about the increase but what I want to see is where cuts were made. Campbell probably got a raise, new positions have been created. What’s the difference in the old and new BA salaries ? This administration has been no better than previous. Goodbye incumbents !

#8. Isn’t it fair to say that the tax increase in itself is necessary to end the “no tax increases” offered by Doherty needed to end? That being said, cut 10% spending and you’ll reap the benefits over time. Otherwise join the exodus and let your kids/grandchildren pay for it all!

7 years of NO TAX increase is what lead to this. And ridiculous spending and borrowing practices. Period!

They can cut till the cows come home and we will still need increased revenue to clean up the mess we are in.
You all may be totally justified in your displeasure that Campbell still has his job or Acting Chief, or that cuts are what you think are needed.

But the blame for this fiasco falls directly on the shoulders of political hack Matt Dorehty and inept Collen Connolly.

Where are the cuts? This is nothing but a lazy practice of approving department budgets without the hard cuts necessary to fix the ills of the past administration. This current mayor needs to step-up and do what he was elected to do. Belmar needs good write-in candidates to balance the puppet council.

#11 – Katrina I’m not trying to be mean, but just pointing out the hypocrisy of attacking Mayor Doherty for past policies with one hand and with the other hand endorse someone who was pro-Doherty, gave money to Doherty (and Brennan) and went to Doherty’s 2014 victory party on election night. It was Doherty’s re-election party, so everyone knew the policy’s they were voting for.

You can’t have it both ways.

This is total BS. Lay off 10% of the employees and be done with it. Campbell’s re-hiring at $185k a year is a kick in the teeth to all residents in town. Get rid of Walsifer and crew next election. Vote in people that will cut spending and stabilize the town. I am a Trump supporter and did vote all Republican this past election. I will be endorsing Dems. this election to get these new bozos out of office. Very disappointing.

I hate to say it but a tax increase is needed but so are budget cuts. I am in the camp that says if it is just a tax increase without serious budget cuts then it is almost Doherty without the stupid lawsuit magnet and the gifts to his old buddies up in Middlesex at the towns expense. No cuts to go with any tax increase and this crowd will get the gate at the first opportunity.Who knows what will replace them but a lot of people who want expenses reduced won’t care. And did I see Lake Como is reducing their tax take?

Jim. Your not mean. your entitled to your opinion as am I. If giving the new folks some leeway to try and straighten things out, even those that believed in Matt, makes me a hypocrite, so be it. More than half the town falls into that category.
So far I like MOST of what I see.
Residents treated with respect at council meetings.
Work being done to improve website.
Some promise with the Lake Como/ Maser DEP situation.
Community Policing coming back on line (By the way April 27 at 930 at borough hall is first meeting for South 10th ave to north blvd zone. All residents from 10 th down encouraged to go and get involved. Help with quality of life issues)
    Skate park issue handled well.
Lights back on on Main st
    Lights on at borough hall.
    BBP seems encouraged.
Movement on getting 10 ave pavilion operational.
    Water/sewer violations being addressed
    Taylor Pavilion rental changes coming.
The DPW yard is actually clean.
All of which was years in the making done in 3 1/2 months.
Would I like to see cuts? Yes
Are there people still working that perhaps should be let go? Maybe
Did I know my taxes were going to go up? Absolutely
But I’m looking towards the light.
Does that make me a hypocrite? For now that’s where I stand.

Took eight years of incompetent management to get us in the hole we are in. It has been four months and many issues have been aired and are being addressed by our council. If you paid attention to the numbers you would not be alarmed to expect a tax increase.

Katrina – The best “community policing” there could be would be a policeman walking a beat. He would get to know the people and of course, the people would get to know him. The exercise would do wonders for his physical, intellectual and emotional well being. As I said, this would help give our police vehicles a rest as well. The concept of any young man constantly in a sitting position is a disaster for him and the public. What isn’t thought of is that the police have excellent health coverage but at the end of their career/if not before, they spend an inordinate amount of time sitting in doctor’s offices with all sorts of ailments linked to the constant sitting.

Katrina, we all know there are inherited problems. With that being said, where are the budgetary cuts needed to offset the spending needed to remedy these problems ? A tax increase would be acceptable if there were cuts made across the board.

Katrina, Glad you concede my point. Half the town doesn’t fall into the category of holding a political seat (county committee) while complaining about past policies supported by their candidate.

I don’t know why you re-directed my question of hypocrisy to list all of the good things you see happening in Belmar. My fingers are crossed that financial solvency, decision making for residents instead of bars or personal gain, and making the town a better place to live are in our future, but there is a difference between giving some leeway and politically endorsing. I would feel so much more comfortable if I knew the individual running on the party’s platform (the one I belong to), shared my concerns and values, and those who did, you didn’t want to endorse or give leeway to…..but you still complain about what got us to this point.

I’m not a cheerleader for a political party, only my beliefs and values. When a party official complains about the past policies then endorses and want leeway for someone that supported those policy’s because they are now in the same party, I cringe, especially when I know Vicky Renner didn’t get your endorsement, and didn’t help create the problems you now want leeway with to solve.

My point – Please stop complaining about things your (our) party candidate supported.
