After the meeting, Doherty called the petitioners “obstructionists” because he said some promised not to petition against the bond if he separated it from other financing that included a different project to replace a pipe in Lake Como. (Not “some”. One. And he said very clearly that he was speaking only for himself.) The council unbundled those bonds in July.
“We have people who don’t want to see the pavilion be built. (Yes there are quite many of them and they must be very evil) No matter what we did, they were going to challenge it. (You didn’t do anything. It’s still the same building at the same price with the same questionable funding.) Trying to work with these folks is like negotiating with terrorists. (Whoa, easy Matt!) What they agree to one day, changes the next,” he said. (There was never any “agreement”. He’s making that up. The entire reason for petitioning to separate 5th Ave from the Lake Como pipe was to fight its $4 million cost without slowing the funding for the pipe. Any other reason being put out there was simply imagined by the bond proponents.)
“It’s depressing to be made out to be made out like we’re opposed to everything,” Clapsis said. “I don’t believe that’s the correct word. We’re financially concerned.” (C’mon Katrina, it’s only money!)
But not all residents who voted no last year are still against the project. Tom Burke, a Republican who is seeking a council seat on the all-Democratic dais this fall (it would still be all Democratic), said that unlike last year, this proposed financing plan makes fiscal sense for the community. (Hey Tom, can you tell me how much it’s going to cost? Free? $1.2 million? $2.2 million? Any idea?)

Wow. I’m a terrorist now? For having the audacity to use the democratic process to give my fellow neighbors a say in how we spend OUR money? Terrorist is a very ugly word and any one who supports our mayors comment should be ashamed of themselves
I wonder if this stunt by mcdirty has put his fellow residents on a Homeland Security watch?
It’s hard to comment without emotional when the mayor calls concerned residents terrorists. He is out of his mind. The people in this town who have gathered together to keep real estates taxes and municipal debt under control should be thanked. Belmar is doomed with this guy in charge.
Tom can’t tell you a thing because he doesn’t know, he should stick to bike safety
Not a very good comparison by our Mayor. I sure hope he wishes that he could take back that statement.
We all should have known that he would have to come up with something stronger and more emphatic than “that element.” Do you think that people will really believe we are “Terrorists”. Ha. I would like to think that people we live with and all of the kids that play together and go to school together know we are all nice people and we all basically want the same thing a decent place to live which we would have if the nonsense and the hidden agendas and the money spent on things that are unnecessary stopped happening. We are a small town and not a place that can have thousands of people infiltrating at any given time. We will never survive that.
I need something stronger than aspirins. Who the heck is he to call us terrorists. Dumb call on his part. Just dumb
Doherty has now reached an all time low by calling residents terrorists. He needs to resign or be recalled.
I thought terrorists is not in the Democratic Dictionary. Didn’t Obama call them “Freedom Fighters”?? Live Free Or Die!
The truth will set us free.
ms sarcastic, you have made leminadequate out of. mcdirty’s intemperate categorization of true Bravehearts who have now been branded in the media. get h to expunge his slurs and insults
#8 We had a recall in this town and it caused a split that really never healed. Now we have a problem that if it keeps heading where it is may do the job and bring peace finally.
Old Irish Proverb.. sticks and stones may break our bones but names will never hurt us.
Lying is not a good policy – some people do not forget, like me. And people who defend and promote the falsehood spinners are no better. Vote the bums out, starting with Jennifer.
He and his administration take money from terrorists. What does that make them?
The petitioners compromised and did not fight the overpriced 10th Avenue Safety Building. No thank you. All should know who the adults are on this issue.
#15 What are you saying?
Reviewed the tapes! Looks like many citizens literally begged the
mayor repeatedly not to force referendum votes. No response(s)from the Dias other than it’s my way or the highway.
My considered opinion… Vote in November. Wait until you see how the administration worded, reworded, reinterpreted the referendum petition first though. The sneaky tricks squad has been marshalled into action for the ballot wording. Don’t worry, There will be guidance available.
15 is saying the petitioners were being reasonable in letting an overpriced safety pavilion go. trying to show good faith after the mayor was trounced in the yes no vote. they want it all and will never compromise. They need to be stopped at every turn.
Administrator of this Blog has said it all. How much is this going to cost taxpayers? NEVER should propose a bond ordinance for any project until it is known what liability the taxpayers will be responsible for. As written, this bond ordinance is all taxpayer liability. NOT OFF SET BY ANY GRANTS, ETC. In my opinion, this is not responsible governing. When the governing body knows our tax liability, then propose the project. I have to vote NO. Any responsible reasoning resident will do likewise.
Calling anyone a terrorist is a serious offense.
Sets a horrible example. What is he taking lessons from Christie?
Katrina, I would sue the mayor and the town for defamation of character…
Our mayor needs somebody for P.R. Bring on the petitions.
I nominate Claire for the job… “Clap On, Clap Off.” Every house she visits, she can offer them her prego sauce…
How embarrassing for all of you. The stories we’ve read this summer show that we are glad we just come on weekends.
22. That would mean cutting half of Colleen’s salary. She came aboard to do PR. Do you really think a Political Science Major has the skills for municipal administration?
#21 I’ll drink to that. How about class action or slander. Imagine all the people that have supported him and gave him money and look what they have done. It was always there it just needed a little push to come out. I hope it goes beyond the local papers and those people now have a look at what they have been backing. All good things come to those who wait. Recall is to good for him he clearly isn’t fit to run a town and other peoples lives.
I don’t have to say much-the thoughts of #23 speak for themselves-the level of thinking and maturity is obvious…..he’s hung up on equating me with Prego sauce-that says it all..
This latest media presentation of the mayor shows the actual thought processes used in governing in Belmar. Simply put, this is yet another demonstration of how unskilled the mayor actually is at this point.
This achievement? Nothing more than reaching the height of ignorance.
Prego is cheap sauce, frequently on sale, not gourmet. Maybe he meant “pray, go!”
#29-Your explanation makes much more sense-my Italian mother is probably rolling in her grave at the thought of me using Prego sauce-I actually use her recipe-with fresh tomatoes and basil from my garden……
#30 I am sure you are excellent cook who does not skimp on ingredients.
#31-Cooking is in my blood-love to feed people……that’s what we Italians do! Prego sauce? Not on your life! Thanks so much for your kind remark…..
“Prego” (i.e., you’re welcome).
Very clever!
