Can someone tell me why all of Belmars 8th grade grad’s that are attending a county magnet school next year had to take summer school for math? And I heard this is normal for Belmar students but not other schools.
My guess is diversity is more important then math. More important to have extra ESL teachers then other core subjects.
Great point #6! Even the “Valedictorian” (most ridiculous thing I have heard, and eighth grade valedictorian) failed the math portions of the entrance exams. Every Belmar student did, and has been for at least the last four years. Entrance exams! The magnet schools know this and expect it from Belmar, that we are way behind other school districts. This is a failure not only of the administration but of the school board. They are supposed to be fighting for our kids and overseeing what is going on. But no, they keep pushing for more money more money. It is a joke.

The teachers union is the most powerful organization in NJ… They are responsible for Murphy winning the election… Like I have said before, there are issues with NJ public schools that are never addressed… I have two boys that have graduated from private school and my daughter is currently attending a private institute…. I would have it no other way, it was the best money I ever spent… The public school system is a scam and to prevent NJ from going bankrupt, a movement towards Charter Schools needs to take place…

#10- Not everyone can afford private schools for their children, the majority of families through out the State can not afford same, your kids were fortunate. Notwithstanding same our public school systems filled with children who do not get a vote in an election need the community’s support to provide them with a quality education. If state and local funding are not helping enough then we need to get creative and start helping with fundraisers and other types of things. We can not simply sit here blogging like haters about the stats and the politics and say screw it and put our hands up. The time to act is now, pay it forward and help out instead of whining about it or worse bragging. I do not even have kids and Im not a teacher but I do see the benefit in the future for all if children are given an advantage of a good education.
Maybe the new Vice Principal Wilton will solve all the problems at Belmar School like her husband did for Lake Como? She must be qualified??? Hahahahahahaha

Just for clarification Summer Timer, I am the Resident in #7 and #14, not the other one. I completely agree with you, I know people who did everything they could so their children could get better education than what is offered at that school. We also could not afford private but did withdraw our kids from there. When our friends relayed to us the letters they received in the mail regarding their children having to attend summer school for failing the math portions of their entrance examinations, I was so thankful my child did not go there. To hear it has been going for years is abhorrent. Apparently they all failed the same sections because they were never taught that in school. Now parents who have younger children are looking at other options. Sad. Something had to be done, someone had to be held accountable. This is not a money issue, more money or fundraising is not the answer. The answer is getting a qualified administration, teachers, and voting in new board members who will make sure this does not continue happening for years to come.

#16… Years ago I tried to help fixed the public school system in another town… Between various laws and the union I found that it is unfixable… I am sorry if have appeared to be a hater or bragging, but this is a topic that is very upsetting…. I believe every child should have a free public school education that is on par with private schools…. However when government and unions are involved, it makes things impossible to achieve…
Okay, so I’ll talk straight about BES in particular and the school system in general.
As far as BES is concerned, it’s a total mess because they’re forced to lie about the Hispanic kids. Once they start lying, one lie leads to another and they’re caught in their own web of deceit. But they know if they don’t lie, the public will be enraged that they’re spending this outrageous amount of money on the children of illegal aliens (probably 2/3 of the school population – free breakfast and lunch on the taxpayer) . The first lie is that they’re up to the instruction. they’re not. They’re pretty well topped out intellectually at 10-11 years old but the lying must continue because to say that out loud is to end their careers.

As far as the system in general, it’s obsolete. It doesn’t serve these children. It was set up for the type of child who no longer exists. To continue with this brick and mortar concept year after year is totally ridiculous. But the people behind the idea of no change (mostly teachers and vendors) are very powerful and they are not going to allow anything to happen to their cash. The answer is to go high tech and have no schools as such. The children will adapt easily. The minority children will do badly but they’re doing badly in the current arrangement as well. I know that’s not supposed to be said, but I’m trying to help. Saying what is popular/acceptable is not helpful.

#25…. State laws and union contracts make it impossible to correct the issues with the public school system… I tried and failed even with a BOE in full agreement we could not move foreward…. You need executive, legislative and judicial branches of state government to approve the radical changes that are need to correct public schools… THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN!!!!!

#25-After reading other comments by you about how Hispanic students peak at ages 10 and 11, I did some research. Local area high schools post academic acconplishments of students during the school term,and of graduates. Very often names of Hispanic students are noted. Take Manasquan High School, for example. Belmar sends students to this high school. Sending districts also include Spring Lake and Sea Girt. Competition academically is tough, as schools such as these score well on state exams. So these students are up there in ranks. I’m always pleased to see names of our Hispanic students up there with the best of the best. I
Belmar Elementary has no control of Hispanic students attending . I think this is mandated by our government.

I agree all children should receive a great education but,BES has purposely attracted the illegals to bring their numbers in attendance up. If code enforcement did their job the rentals would not fill up with illegals and then the school wouldn’t fill up with their children. Does Sea Girt or Spring Lake have this issue? That would be no.Poor housing in winter rentals have opened the doors to the year round residents paying excessive costs per child to BES. Otherwise it would have shut down or been forced to join another school to form one. Too late now ! Thank you Dr. Richens for years of protecting jobs including your own, then retired and left Belmar Homeowners holding the bag. The corruption is disgusting and always has been. I’m sure there are good people there that just need a job but it’s up to the town to clean up who lives here legally. Our taxes keep going up with the slogan”our taxes not being raised again”. Sure on the municipality tax it sounds great then you look to education and they still need MORE money. It’s a bottomless pit. If you choose not to send your child there as a resident you should receive 15 or 17 thousand dollars per child back to pay for the school you want. I wanted to mention that I went to BES a few years ago when I found out my tenant kept their children enrolled in the pre school program when they had moved to Manasquan.I couldn’t believe there was no communication between the school and the tenant. Manasquan didn’t offer the free stuff we were giving so the tenant lived in another town and we payed in Belmar. I had suggested at that time that all landlords must notify the school when a renter with children moves to another town.NO one listened ,no one cared. I think it is a waste of our funds and should be a crime with a penalty. People are taking advantage of the lack of communication between all agencies. Housing,Landlords,Tenants, Illegals ,Community policing should all be on the same page to clean this mess up.
People have been caught doing this and kicked out of the school. That one slipped through the cracks. You can’t even live out of town a few months if you’re renovating your home. As a Realtor I’ve seen this. It’s a small town and administrators and residents are friends, but they’ll still report it. It happens. Renters have to show many current forms that prove residency. Again – this needs to be a collaborative effort. The school isn’t ICE and it isn’t code enforcement. BES follows the mandated protocol very seriously.

Aileen I’m confused how you perceived anyone expecting anyone at BES to think they are ICE or code enforcement. In the incident I was referring to it did not slip through the cracks. I went down to the school personally,brought it to their attention and it took weeks to have them remove their children. My only point is ,what is wrong with having landlords who rent to families,sign a document how many children are in the rental.Wouldn’t that help the school with their numbers ? When they relocate ,what is wrong with the landlord ,who has to get a new CO ,notifying the school as part of their responsibility. It would be part of the rental process which I see nothing wrong with. Ice and Code enforcement have their own jobs to do and I didn’t see anyone ask teachers to enforce those agencies laws .Just enforce the BES rules.
Let me show this. This is somewhat the way I was a child. You will see in this video how we learned when I was a boy. We didn’t know or care that we were poor. We were outdoors learning every minute of the day. What you see here is what’s known as “Spatial Awareness.” We were learning about everything, different shapes, forms and those things in motion. We became innovators. We understood geography and weather. We could throw a ball and skip a rock on water. When the teacher asked a little boy how much 2+2 was, he probably said 37. Who cared what a teacher thought? After all, she couldn’t do something useful like climb a tree. Without this type of knowledge instilled early in boys and girls (the girls didn’t climb – they did things we boys didn’t do), trying to teach them wouldn’t have been possible. It would be like teaching addition and subtraction and then from there trying to teach trigonometry to the child. It’s too much of a step. That’s one of the reasons we have this mess with young men and women. They have zero Spatial Awareness. It’s because of this new manner of living.

#47—– not for nothing mrs renner is pointinv out a problem and feasible solution to a problem that has a good chance of potential reoccurrence of happening. Took time to make sure the problem was addressed when she learned of it. She should get a thank you, not a nasty, defensive response, from you. Even when one or two “slip through the cracks” as you put it, when it costs how much to educate one child it effects the budget, could have contributed to repairs or other things needed in the budget. no wonder people in the community don’t help out the school if this is the thanks their offered.
Imagination and out of district students are just a distraction to the real issue… Is the public school system delivering a service that is serving every student in NJ effectively… Also is the current system cost effective…. The answer to both is a resounding NO!!!! If the state doesn’t admit there are issues, they will never to resolved….
I also understand that renters must prove occupancy which I also tried to address years ago and in my previous comment. Here’s how to make it work, I rent my house out with 3 bedrooms, the occupancy is 6. 2 adults with 2 children come to rent the space. along with a lease I fill out a separate paper that states 2 adults,2 children. A copy of my Co goes to the school for documentation and the school knows 2 children will be attending and the renter has proof they live in my rental.
Bad scenario = 2 more adults with 2 children claim they live at the same address now 4 adults and 4 children unrelated or related live in my rental. But oh the occupancy was for 6. Red Flag! to Code enforcement and to BES. Now 2 adults leave with 2 children and move to Manasquan .Belmar saves on 2 children. Over occupancy is not safe for anyone especially children. That is the Code enforcements job. I brought up Community Policing because years ago the officers knew who lived on each street in most houses. If someone moved they should be aware of their street assigned to them. That is good for policing and good for our neighborhoods.,especially when at one time we had an abundance of transient people. The Belmar Inn was proof. So my point is I am the type of person that if I notice a problem I would like to present a solution. I may not be right but at least my original theory 30 years ago would have worked wonders. Getting all agencies I mentioned to be on the same page was difficult. I never understood why . Now at 62 I see someone always profits from bad situations and therefore will continue to put obstacles in the way of very simple solutions.,or they just aren’t that interested in cleaning the problems up. I stand by my original plan until proven wrong. For the record the family originally mentioned was Caucasian and legal but they still tried to get something for free. When it’s your own money you watch every penny in your budget, I would hope the BES and Town would do the same. On this blog we point out waste and topics we feel are unjust.Yes to some it’s a gripe session to vent frustration but to some I would hope we could discuss real solutions .
Vickie – You stated what I stated. It’s code enforcement’s job to have all tenants on record. They should do their job just like BES should do their job of requiring multiple forms of recent ID proving residency. Sure, add a new link that code enforcers records can be sent to BES – fine idea. Apologies if I seemed to upset anybody by saying that BES actually is strict about this. They are. They really don’t like paying for out of town students. I don’t know the reason for their reaction to you the day you alerted them. I was just reassuring you and all these helpful bloggers who are in such service to, ah, I guess…. this blog, that BES is pretty strict about this and that your experience is most likely unique. We don’t post about the people who get thrown out. Anyone have any other stories like Vickie’s? If there’s a pattern here, I’d like to know.

While it’s quite obvious that it makes sense to go to school online, you’ve mentioned grammar schools should do it. Since Dilberger used to say boys should learn outside and girls don’t need school at all, then switched to this online idea, I bet he got it from Milo or Carson or Hannity. Aileen – When does residency have to be proved? Each year? I was required to provide proof of residency when registering my children for Kindergarten and have not had to do so since that time.
