The legislative committees also should explore how much influence peddling went on behind the scenes to secure the AshBritt contract. The list of those paid by AshBritt to push its services throughout the state includes George Gilmore, the Republican chairman in Ocean County, and Maggie Moran, the wife of the mayor of Belmar. No-bid, high-priced contracts peddled by the politically connected in this state are a recipe for shafting taxpayers.

No one should fault the state for wanting to take immediate action after Sandy. But once the first few days had passed, it should have followed FEMA’S requirements for reasonable and fair solicitation of contracts and pricing. The hearings offer the best hope so far for getting answers to questions Christie apparently doesn’t feel he needs to take seriously.

The Legislature needs to dig deep and press hard for answers.

One question I’d like answered is:  Why were Bill Young and Colleen Connolly out selling Ashbritt to other towns?  Were they acting as agents for Ashbritt too?

    I sure would like to see that question answered too. Especially on the Bill Young side. I am sure we will be asking more and more questions for which answers may be slow in coming.
