Looking Ahead

As I said good bye to Iceland and said good bye to the year 2017 the other night, it occurred to me that there is something else I said good bye to up on the roof of the Gamla Bió in Reykjavik.  And that’s saying to people “I’m moving to New Hampshire next year.”  Now it’s this year.  In a few more months I will be saying good bye to Belmar and all the wonderful friends I have here.

I have to start thinking about the future of this blog and at this point I really have no idea what to do with it.  I certainly don’t want to run it from New Hampshire…to be honest I’m tired of running it even now.  I don’t want to just shut it off because I would like all the information I’ve accumulated and archived here to remain accessible to the public at least for a few more years.  I would like also somehow, if you want, to keep it available as a forum for the hundreds of readers and commenters that have a shared interest in keeping civic life in Belmar transparent and on the up and up.  Of course you all would have to go out and dig up your own stories to share.  But I don’t really know how that would work.  And of course I would have to worry about legal issues if I still owned the site.

Maybe somebody out there wants to set up some kind of forum that later this year we could migrate to.  I don’t know.  Send me your suggestions.  In the meantime I’ll continue doing what I do but maybe not quite so energetically.

One more thing.  I know this isn’t a travel blog but I just want to mention that Iceland is a really amazing place and everybody should visit it at least twice, once in winter and once in summer.  The natural beauty of the place is beyond belief and the people are so friendly, peaceful and civil that there is no such thing as police patrols.  They are not needed.  The police only leave the station if someone calls for assistance.  And they don’t carry weapons.

I commented to a taxi driver about the civility and peacefulness of the Icelandic culture and in a lighthearted poke at his and his countrymen’s Viking ancestors he said yes, now.

And they don’t carry weapons. – That’s because they have little to no “diversity.”

Dying to go to Iceland! Hope to see you in person and hear all about it.

Thanks for posting important info over the years. Although I’ve agrued with other’s posts, and disagreed with some of your viewpoints from time to time; I want to say how grateful I am to get important details about town decisions. You care about Belmar and take the time to research and inform. So thanks, Dave.

#9 says we all wish you the best. While I do personally wish you and your family the best, I take offence with Mr Dilberger saying “we all”. This man is one of the most intolerant of others opinions that I have come in contact with. He,in no way has my approval to have me included when he says “We all….”. When you look up the definition of Bigot in the dictionary; the person who comes to my mind first is this man.

Even this past 1 1/2 years Bill and I have missed working with you on stories. You are the finest example of fidelity and citizenship I have the honor of knowing.Glad you had the Iceland experience. I have considered Iceland my second home and preferred land since first visiting in 1970. Imagine the airport then was just military bunkers, no complete rim road. When you visited places like the Golden Falls, no parking lot, no railings nada. In 1980 June I spent a week and went though the center to the north. I returned in 1989 and took my parents in October. My favorite is for my birthday May 2005 spent 2 weeks and went to every area. See my reviews Ted E on TripAdvisor. Thousands of people world wide have visited Snaelfeness MY FAVORITE PLACE ON THE PLANET, since my review. Next time you must go there.

Absolutely drive the Ring Road, and bring a shovel for scooping gravel in case you get stuck in a flood like I did. Hekla had just erupted and the icy ground melted and flooded the road. Thank the Norse Gods, some guys in one of those jacked up SUVs with the big tires rescued us. Awesome. I remember traveling through a remote road that had been plowed, at least 30 feet of snow on both sides, a real frozen canyon. A lonely job? The guy who drives the snow plow. And watch out for the resident elves who protect their habitats. Really.

Have you been experiencing POSTAL Delivery SERVICE on your street? – The mail delivery in Belmar is a real problem. Many have complained to Juan the Post Master or his representatives via telephone and/or in person over the past 5 years but to no avail. Missing mail and wrong address deliveries are the main issues. Most of us bring the wrong deliveries to the post box or offices but now services are being interrupted because bills were not received by residents. What can be done? Tampering with the mail is a Federal Offense. Where’s your Valpak coupons too? Someone is hoarding them? Being told to pay for a box at the Post Office is unacceptable don’t you think? No wonder all of us are paying bills online now. It’s just wrong for the general public to be abused by neglect.

It’s not tampering, it’s generally speaking, younger workers (please don’t get upset with the truth). They just don’t care much for what they’re doing so they do a sloppy job (it’s about the acquisition of money to young people, not doing actual work). It’s not just the post office. It’s everything young people do. Go out to eat and get a young waitress/waiter. You give your order once and then say it again so she’ll/he’ll get it right (my best one is I went to a restaurant and ordered a hamburger with a slice of raw onion – the dingbat actually brought me a plate of raw onions, she hadn’t heard the hamburger part – YIKES). But it’s not just the mail or eating out. It’s in everything young people do. Don’t take my word for it, Ask anyone who deals with these young people on a daily basis. Lastly, of course, yes, there are some young people who are competent, good workers.
