Lunchtime Rumbling

Clair Deicke makes a few points in today’s letter to the Asbury Park Press, one valid, the rest mostly wrong.

It’s true that the Avon Pavilion is a very different building than the planned Taylor Pavilion so cost comparisons aren’t totally valid.  But it also seems that by having their public works department do much of the construction, and by keeping other costs under control, that public officials in Avon were doing their best to keep the price down.  I don’t get that impression about the situation here in Belmar.

Deicke then goes on to state that we need to hurry because building costs are going up.  I see no evidence of that and I hate when salesmen tell me I need to rush a decision before the price increases.  Usually my response to such pressure is “Thanks, but no thanks.”

As for her argument that community groups use the building and that beachgoers can come in out of the rain, I would say why is it that no other town in the area sees the need for a $4 million beachfront community center and rain shelter?  Not Bradley Beach, Avon, Spring Lake, Sea Girt, Manasquan, Point Beach, Bayhead, Mantoloking, The Brick beaches, Lavalette, Ortley Beach, Seaside Heights, or Seaside Park.  Why is it only Belmar sees great need to have such a building right away?  Don’t these other towns have community groups?  Don’t their beachgoers want to get out of the rain?  And by the way, when the town passed the resolution to have a summer camp for the kids, no mention was made that they needed a $4 million beachfront building for it.  Other towns have summer camps.  None of them spent $4 million on a building for it.

Claire ends her letter with the following:

Opponents threaten another petition drive that will force a referendum vote. Haggling will continue to divide our community. It’s time to put differences aside and move forward with bringing this iconic pavilion back to Belmar’s beachfront.

I say the reason another referendum may be needed is because the Council refuses to honor the vote on the last one.  And if they really want to stop dividing the community and put differences aside then drop this crazy $4 million pavilion idea.

Anyway, I have to get back to work.

Wow, like the Avon Pavilion where Bill and I enjoy many a great breakfast ( very ADA compliant and can we talk about the Nova Lox scramble on weekends, Oye! ), I digress. The only way to sell the additional 3 million for the Taylor ( Sorry the John Taylor Memorial Pavilion is to call it “iconic”. Unfortunately, the “iconic” Taylor met the fate of all previous pavilions. As hurricane season approaches and “global warming, chaos, whatever! threatens the miniature golf capital of the U.S. let us be happy that thanks to level-headed voters, we can all sleep more soundly.

The open air pavilion of that you speak of ( they have built 2 since sandy) your correct no heat or AC but it will keep you dry in a storm. It can also hold town function 4 months out of the year. You might ask where we go for the other 8 months , and I would say that’s why we a have municipal building. But if that’s not avail we go to the new marina building that was also built in house. Now I’m not sure what the “open air ” pavilion cost or the new marina building but I’ll bet you a pot of your famous meatballs it was less than 4.1 million.

It had more architectural style BUT it certainly was not iconic. For, Claire it seems that ” absence makes the heart grow fonder.” While I admire her jump to make Mr. Ehmann wrong after his remark in the AAP. That fact remains, you are being critical and 60% of the Belmar voters are not “haggling”.

#55 I never said you were entitled to your point of view or opinion however you still cannot explain why the council lost twice, and when people bring facts up you attack them.

I know this getting off the subject but I am very bothered by this whole HBS project and fundraiser, talking about all of these things going on in Belmar not making sense, this would be one of them for me.Is there not anyone else curious as to why they stopped posting the updates on the houses and the contributions also. In the beginning they were post everything, every fundraiser, how much they were raising and the updates and progress of both the Keefe and Sperber homes. Does anyone else not find it odd that the deadline came and went and there were no updates as to how much was raised in total or if the projects were completed. Not a word after all the publicity that was being done for the fundraiser. We don’t even know where our donations went. Also the fact that it seems they went way over board with Ms Keefe’s house. How can it be that we are funding to build a house three times the size and not to mention the condition the house was pre storm to what stands now.I mean im sorry I thought the idea was to build what these families lost, so they could come home nothing more ,nothing less. Can anyone justify or even explain and make sense of why this beautiful 5 bedroom,4 bath,3 fireplaces,2 zone central air with all the extra bells and whistles is being built where there was nothing more than a 3 bedroom,1 bath and in very poor condition bungalow styles house once sat. I don’t know much on how it all works but I know something’s not right or fair. And the fact that so many people are questioning it and it is not being addressed by our Mayor. What are they hiding or covering up. Its disgusting knowing there are other people still without and what makes this family so worthy where others are not? Can anyone shed light on the situation for any of us who are concerned about this matter.

CHECK OUT THE SURCHARGES ON YOUR FLOOD INSURANCE BILL. Did you know that you are subsidizing your local businesses who “suffered” from the effects of Superstore Sandy even if you did not file a claim. And, hey, you get to continue to subsidize said businesses in your future bills. Belmar’s rating anyone?

If she is even writing what she says, notice the only one questioning the commentators name is her, no one is questioning if in fact she is getting help from someone for the comments. #61 we are not giving up. If you continue to support the fact that the democratic council is on the right track after losing 2 lawsuits you need to get on another train we are watching.

The mayor tells people what they want to hear (sometimes) to brush them off and then does what he wants. Kind of like a buddha with a clenched mouth, not terribly serene but with his own agenda, residents be damned. 3 1/2 more years to put up with this guy! And some folks seem to worship him. What kind of sparkly fairy-dust does he sprinkle around town to numb brains and beguile the democrat groupies?.

Please receive this posting as an olive branch-since there continues to be interest in my Mom’s meatballs (The Truth-#4)..Karen Oliveri must have a similar recipe, as she possesses that beautiful Italian name..
    Rose D’Ambrosio’s meatballs: (My Mom)
    ingredients-1lb chopped beef, 2 eggs,1/4
cup grated Italian cheese, 1/4 cup breadcrumbs, 2 sprigs of parsley diced, 1clove of garlic, cut thin, dash of salt and pepper, and your favorite tomato sauce
Directions-saute garlic until it’s shiny, not brown-mix all ingredients (thoroughly) with meat. If mixture is too moist, add a bit more breadcrumbs or cheese.. if it’s too dry, add a splash of water..Shape meatballs until they’re well-formed, probably the size of golf balls. (it’s all in the palms!) Fry in sizzling oil until they’re golden brown. Place the meatballs into bubbling tomato sauce. Cook for an hour and 1/2..this recipe will make 17-18 meatballs…serve with pasta.

How is that attacking? I don’t think you’re making much sense-just a very angry person who blindly takes stabs at me because you don’t like me (I’m OK with that) or your thinking is limited….and you easily change your mind-if you can’t see that I’m attempting to make light of things on this blog, then I don’t know what to say-how about trying my meatball recipe? That should cheer you up! You are the only person in my nearly 73 years who has accused me of being self-centered..but your thinking is limited and you haven’t looked at my ongoing history with my involvement in this town…..with the beginning of this commentary, I responded to the administrator’s remarks about my recent letter to the APP….how is that attacking? Then the commentary became ongoing-I also think you would never make this comments about me to my face-outrage is not one of your strong points…and you don’t use sarcasm well-as your false title claims-look up the word in the dictionary-take a lesson from the administrator of this blog- he “gets” my humor-your don’t.. you’re humorless-not a good way to go through life….I hope things turn around for you…..be happy!
