ha! Hilarious that Matt is against it, after saying “This would be great for Belmar” when a developer who’s in the upper echelons of Scientology wanted to develop the municipal building and add many stories of apartments above. That developer would pay nothing – no taxes, no pilot, nothing. And he’d own a building in town that could easily house a cult. What’s worse, Brian McGovern didn’t even realize we’d get no revenue. He kept talking about tax ratables.

Hey guys – working in Atlantic City is really hard. I wanna come back and be your mayor. I hate this development thing (if you do). Elect me and I’ll do right by you (especially you Depeppe….because my development projects are good, Marks are bad).

The idea of a ferry is a joke. Has anyone ever taken the Highlands or Atlantic Highlands ferry’s? There are a sea of cars parked in those places each day. Where would we put all those cars? Ridiculous!

A Ferry will never work…. As stated before on this blog there are to many bad weather days for this to be feasible… The passengers will get destroyed on that trip…. Furthermore, docking a boat on the Shark River between main street and Rt 35 bridge will be a comedy… Low tide with the ripping current and narrow canal will make docking a boat the size of a ferry impossible… They should ask some of the boat captains with larger boats…. Our government at it’s best, there are people in town that know the river and should be asked for opinions…

  9. #8 – Exactly. They seem to be throwing as much as they can at the wall and seeing what wil stick. Change may be coming, but hopefully not that planned atrocity!

I believe that this was just a presentation, nothing more, nothing less. I believe that this administration is trying to be transparent and allow these presentations to be made in a public forum, which is more than can be said for the previous administration. They were also seeking other suggestions. I am sure that no one thinks that this presentation will result in the exact plans being presented, let alone approved. Let’s see what transpires. The landowners have every right to see what they can get approved. It will be up to to the Council and the Planning Board to decide what works best for Belmar, with public input, of course.

  12. #11 – So what did our mayor mean in this article when he said “I’m all for it”?

#12- he’s entitled to his opinion, but he also said at the meeting that this was for informational purposes and that studies had to be done etc. So, I think we are a long way off from anyone making a decision. It is not one person’s decision to make. I, for one, am glad that these proposals are being vetted in a public forum.

#10 you don’t agree with Matt on this one. You don’t like this plan, yes, but Matt is only SAYING he’s against this plan to get people (people with no memory) to be on his side so that he can have more clout when endorsing new candidates like McBride and Russo. Please don’t be fooled. Matt pitched ideas like this one and is absolutely jealous of this plan. He’d love to be Mayor in a town that enacted a development such as this one.

If the borough hall is moved to the park on 16th ave. Will the park land need to replaced somewhere else in town. I’m not sure if this park is a green acres funded park. If it is I really hope someone considered this.

The project would definitely have to be fine tuned. Hopefully people watching the dobco presentation heard how their own professionals didn’t really seem to have the answers, he said in reference to areas in the plan, that “flooding happens” it is what it is, who develops knowing something is likely to flood once or twice a year. He said for the ferry it could be 40, 100 or 450 people and water remediation done but they had no studies. They want to move to municipal building again no studies, AT ALL. And reading their submission who pays for the studies at 16th ave site? I guess that’s why they called it a workshop because there seems like a lot more work to be done before an educated person could vote on a project of this scale. Usually the “unknowns” are the things that come back and bite you and increase cost, etc., to say this could be voted on with out studies being conducted to know the answer is just ignorant. Be smart, be informed especially a project of this size. A big project, could lead to an even bigger failure if not educated the right way. No rushing get it done the proper way leaves less to chance. This isn’t something you buy site on scene or as is sale.

The proposed density, height and scale of this development is absurd, particularly in a section of the town that is cut-off from Highway 35 (and don’t even get me started on their plan to build an on-ramp to 35 from the marina side of the 7th Ave underpass).

The 16th Ave site is not only a Green Acres site, but it’s the subject of a restrictive environmental deed that bars the Borough from penetrating the pavement on the site for any purpose. The pavement was installed in the early 1990’s to cap the site and prevent the off-site migration of runoff from buried coal tar residue that has contaminated that site since its use as a coal gasification plant in the early 1900’s.

Whoever said make it as nonsensical as possible so when we scale it back it will look great by comparison got their $$$ worth.

Ask for something crazy…then when people get upset, scale it back a tiny bit and you’ll be praised by this mayor and the council for “listening to the community”.

That’s what happened with the 4 story building they pushed through on 9th ave. Now the floodgates are open! It’s the wild west in Belmar development – anything goes!
