How about the planned *Arcade* at the former Norwood Auto Parts …. directly across Main Street from the Belmar Elementary School?
I can think of nothing good resulting from this idea…. Maybe they will offer “Grand Theft Auto” for the children to play?

I would say it was somewhat contentious, yes. Video should be up by tonight. Unfortunately I had a problem with the camera and part of the meeting didn’t tape. Got most of it though.

We learned that the postage for Claire “People Not Politics” Deicke’s recent letter was paid for by the Belmar Democratic Committee. From the heart? Nah…from the funders who contributed to that Committee, I would conclude. Business is business. Volunteer at an animal shelter if you want to show real “heart”. You can’t dupe the critters there.

    Mean-Spirited
Claire has spent much energy attacking mean-spirited comments about public officials (on this blog). The most recent from partisan Democrat Mike Kalena printed in today’s Coast Star. He bases all of his negative comments about Councilman Bean on being at and watching Bean at Council meetings. I have been going to meeting for two years now, I know who Mike is and I have never seen him once. I checked the minutes and he never comments. Pathetic, really. Here is a 40 something, unmarried playboy, who rents, is a laborer for a paint company but saved enough to contribute $2600. to the mayor’s election committee and get an appointment to the Belmar Harbor Commission. Kalena accuses Bean ( a veteran, father, husband, elected official and computer wiz) of not being his own man and a puppet for a mysterious, unnamed puppet master.
This was in the same edition where
Patrick Farrell printed a large letter to the editor for the mayor posing as a news article. Patrick big typo you meant “new” not knew.

Ms Perspicacity-Yes, my letter was paid for by the Democratic Committee-we are, after all, historically a party of the people-and the Republican, historically, is the party of big business…that’s not a criticsm, it’s fact-a letter from the Democratic Committee stating it’s about people, not politics is appropriate-My father, rest his soul, was an ultra-con servative Republican….so I really think that I know from whence I speak-are you the person who wasn’t allowed to comment because you were yelling out from the back of the room last evening? Or are you the resident from 18th Ave. whose last name begins with the letter W? I know you’ll come back at me with a wicked comment- you always do….. why don’t you use your actual name? You can criticize me all you want, but I use my real name-a person with your convictions about people and issues shouldn’t be afraid to use your real name……looking forward to your next commentary about me-under a false name

Belmar Resident-What can you be thinking? I speak to negative things posted about me-as is my right, last I heard.the negativity abounds on this post …..what someone else writes(Kalena reference) is what they think-I have no control over that-and, by the way, how can you criticze me when you don’t even use your actual name? Mike Kalena wrote under his own name as well-all of you hide behind false names-really? You’re criticizing me? This really gives me a chuckle-the harsh, mean-spirited comments from our opposition have been relentless over the past two years-and when someone writes what they think that opposes your position…….horrors! We’re such insensitive, bad people.. It’s so one-sided…..did it ever occur to you that what people write has to do with responding to all of the negative perceptions from people like you??

    Claire,

Quick question is a frivolous lawsuit still frivolous when the plaintiff is vindicated in a court of law ?

How many of these frivolous Law suits has the past or current town council been on the right side of the law ?

What does it say about your candidates or your positions when you have to rely so heavily on a local night club and its clientele to win a referendum or election. I really think it is time to wake up your cohorts and just do away with this idiotic and divisive ordinance and get Belmar back to the town that it was. Like you say it about people not unions.

Printed today in Coast Star. It is so clear why this town is divided. Those that are honest with moral integrity who want a new leader with the same values. And those that pay to get what they want, abuse authority and patronage those that give it to them.

Is DJais coddling Belmar residents or stumping for Mayor Doherty

    Dear Editor,

The line for DJais Belmar residents’ party extended around the block as residents were proofed and offered VIP cards for 50% off food and drink for a year – let me say that again, a year – in exchange for personal information. So what does DJais plan to do with this information? Inform you of events? They do that just fine with mailings although it would be less expensive to do that with emails and phone calls. Imagine getting a barrage of emails and phone calls like the barrage of mailings sent out by the mayor for the $7 Million Bond Referendum.

Mayor Doherty and team all the guests. Or were they campaigning in their political t-shirts with their names on them? The November election is coming up, and after Belmar residents voted against the mayor-supported referendum in spite of the large donation from the Union who stood to profit from the outcome; my perception is he is again accepting donations from a business which stands to profit from his re-election at the expense and peace of Belmar residents in the form of a year-round liquor license.

In past elections involving Mayor Doherty, DJais employees have hand carried the maximum allowed absentee ballots to the Board of Elections on Election Day. That would be 10 ballots for each employee. Who are these voters that they require assistance from DJais employees to vote absentee, and why are there so many that cannot make it to the polls? Will your personal information be added to DJais absentee ballot list?

DJais usually holds one party for Belmar residents. Before November’s election, there are three parties scheduled. The Mayor was nice enough to advertise DJais’ donations to the beach party in the taxpayer-funded mailing with our Borough water bill. Could this possibly be a conflict of interest? An ethics violation? Once again – perception. I am not saying DJais would give the mayor its email list, nor that the mayor would use it to send out commentary that could not be answered or refuted by an opponent.

I do believe there is no way Belmar voters can be persuaded to vote one way or the other based on free food and drink. However, an unethical scenario may be barraging voters via private emails with one-sided political information that cannot be disputed. According to Local Government Ethics Law: Whenever the public perceives a conflict between the private interests and the public duties of a government officer, the public’s confidence is imperiled as well as the official’s integrity. How confident can we be that Belmar government knows and represents my best interests?

I stated it’s about people, not politics-didn’t mention unions-never had to rely on DJ’s-never organized an event at DJ’s-I rely on letting the residents know how well we came back from Sandy (thanks to people like you-I know who you are),our government body, and the borough staff. I can’t speak to the number of lawsuits the borough was involved with-(sorry I ended a sentence with a preposition, Henry Higgins..no need to correct me-I know it’s not perfect grammar…)

Dwelling on past accomplishments like recovery from the storm does not move the Borough of Belmar forward in a fiscally responsible way. One council member seems fixated on “the children”. She should consider the debt that they will inherit if they live in this town later. The mayor claimed last night that he does not know the amount of the borough’s debt to date. Is this the kind of person to lead a town, someone who does not have a handle on that information – or claims ignorance? Accountability not dubiousness. There is a slogan for you.

Maybe I’ll go with that slogan next time….

And yes, there is life on main street – but I don’t speak Spanish, so I don’t go south of 9th.

And again, enforce the rules we have – code enforcement on the year round rentals is non-existent and my bet is most of the issues in town are from rentals.

Belmar Resident-I can’t believe you posted this comment addressed to me-examine posts/comments on this blog-read every one going back to 2012-then tell me that your question has any value…..do YOU honestly believe that all these comments are OK? Self-righteousness doesn’t become you…as I’ve previously stated, it’s very one way with individuals who think as you do.I used the word element-meaning a select group from the community-you can believe that or not-and the administrator of this blog turned it into a federal case…..then go back and re-think all of the negativity brought to bear from our opposition that has appeared in the newspapers…..so suddenly, comments are coming forth about the councilman from your side-and you don’t like it?? Read the omments on this blog about me, Matt, Matt’s wife, Councilwoman Nicolay and Councilman Magovern then get back to me about what YOU honestly believe…let me know what retribution you’ve suffered-I’d be interested in learning about this…use your actual name-mudslinging is old news on this blog…..members of my family think that some of the comments that have been posted could be considered libelous-one being, “I hope you didn’t poison the minds of the students you taught…”on an earlier post the administrator made an insulting remark on this blog about me being thin-skinned-not knowing anything about me or what I’ve endured in my life..I was defending myself about a comment made at a public meeting..if I didn’t respond, I’d have been accused of not answering-there’s no winning with peoople from your group..someone was referred to as Miss Piggy on the comments section- is that OK with you?and YOU’RE upset about the comments made by Mike Kalena?? The administrator of this blog chose not to censor any of these remarks i’ve referenced–but chose to post them….the mudslinging began on this blog long before Kalena’s letter of today in the Coast Star…..his remarks are mild by comparison as to what’s been allowed to be posted as comments-….when my husband reached out to the administrator of this blog taking hime to task about remarks posted about me, the administrator used the freedoms of speech routine-just want to give you some background from my perspective..since you hide behind an alias, how do I know that you don’t hold a seat on one of the town committees (referring to your comment that Kalena sits on thie harbor commission)..at least Mike used his actual name-I think people who are supportive of me and like thinkers believe it’s time to reveal feelings that they hold-just as your side has done for a very long time-

My opinion regarding freedom of speech while in a political arena: to use an old saying, “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” I would add to this, if you stay in the kitchen, you cannot control the temperature (even though you wish you could by censorship, etc.)

Matters can get nasty eventually, but that is part of the game, isn’t it? Remember that Gary Hart was brought down by being photographed with that woman who sat on his lap in some boat. (Fortunately I cannot draw, but if I could, I would supply some tasty caricatures of certain players here.)

Is it too hot in the kitchen? A good sweat cleans out the toxins.

On another note, Jim Bean was/is a Marine. Damn, I would not mess with one, knowing a bit about their training. I would feel pretty good having one of them in charge.

Perhaps you’d be more credible if you use your real name, although I’m pretty sure of who you are-I’ve heard you speak at council meetings (not recently) and your postings sound very much like your comments at these meetings-same expressions, same tone of thoughts….I think one was…….we voted you in, we can vote you out…..”

The truth can be perceived as negative by someone who cannot face it. Free speech seems to be a good thing as long as it does not disclose the truth, I suppose. Anyway, one cannot reason with and hold a fruitful exchange with someone who speaks only from a script. Madam, look in the mirror. Communicating with you is pointless. Let us end this gentle ribbing now and see how this contentious mess plays out.
